Once again, I'm impressed with Michelle Moran's extensive research in her historical fiction novels; in this case, of ancient Egypt, with a specific focus on Queen of Egypt, Nefertiti. Although Nefertiti's image is widely known, there are still so many unknowns about her. Moran brings this woman to life as she writes this fictional account from the viewpoint of Nefertiti's younger sister, Mutnodjmet.

Some reasons why I enjoyed this story:
1. I learned about the intrigue, the deadly familial back-stabbing quests for power, the political unrest and the religious conflicts in Egypt while under the rule of Queen Nefertiti and her husband, Pharaoh Akhenaten;
2. Moran's descriptive writing made me feel like I was part of Egypt's natural surroundings along the Nile as well as the opulence of the temples, the palaces, the courtyards/gardens and the fashions; and,
3. I appreciated the inclusion of the 18th dynasty family tree and the 1351 BCE map of Egypt, both of which I referred to frequently.

Whenever a book intrigues me enough to have me researching its topic in greater detail, then it was worth the read! Highly recommended for historical fiction fans!

Vicky "phenkos" Nice review, Debbie! I wasn't aware of this book but i'm interested in the history of ancient Egypt, so I may give it a go!

Debbie W. Vicky wrote: "Nice review, Debbie! I wasn't aware of this book but i'm interested in the history of ancient Egypt, so I may give it a go!"

Thanks, Vicky! Michelle Moran also wrote a follow-up book to this one that I hope to read soon! It's called The Heretic Queen. Nefertiti's sister, Mutnodjmet, had a daughter named Neferati - it's about her!

Jennifer N I loved this!

Thanks, Libby! I think writing historical fiction would be quite difficult - keeping your reader entertained while researching to be historically accurate!

Ashleigh Gunty Hey Debbie, she wrote three books the third of which is about Cleopatra's daughter which is of course during the reign of pharaoh Cleopatra the 7th. But what I loved about both books was the interconnectedness of some of the minor background characters that's show up in Heretic Queen as well.

I would however if you are unfamiliar with some of the terms buy both books because the glossary is only in Heretic Queen

Thanks, Ashleigh! Besides Nefertiti, I have also read The Heretic Queen and Cleopatra's Daughter (which was, unfortunately, my least favorite of the three). I do enjoy this author's writing style!

This is so true! Great review, Debbie.

Ashleigh Gunty Yeah Cleopatra was not my favorite Pharaoh Hatshepsut was and I'm a bit of an Egyptian nerd in that I had an Egyptologist's wife for a fifth grade teacher so I've grown up knowing about these women.

To have it told from a relative's perspective is absolutely the perfect way to do it. We know from history almost nothing about Nefertari other than the fact she was extremely gifted with languages and that she loved Ramses II.

Nefertiti, because of what happened when she reigned, there is very little actual records of what she was like, (as a human being) especially because she had such ambition.

What Michelle Moran did here was literally show Nefertiti at her real age. She married Akhenaten when she was what we would consider now illegally underage

Edited for spelling and just bad English

I love when teachers share interesting knowledge about topics like this! I remember learning about ancient Egypt in Grade 6 many years ago and found it very fascinating!

Jennifer Welsh Great review, Debbie! I’d like to get this for my mother-in-law, but it needs to have no sex or adultery in it - is that the case? 🙏🏻

I do remember that Nefertiti's husband had a wife who was pregnant (and continued to have more children by him) when he married Nefertiti (who also bore him children). According to the customs in those days, this was perfectly acceptable. So yes, there is adultery, but not according to them (although the wives were jealous of each other!)
