The Good Neighbor: The Life and Work of Fred Rogers

Without a doubt, Fred Rogers is an icon in the worlds of both children's television and child development. It was his passion to always do what is best for the children that really shines through in this comprehensive biography. Having seen the documentary that was released this year before reading the book was helpful to me in establishing a framework for processing information in this book. Many might find the documentary to be more helpful as this bio runs a bit on the long side and tends to be repetitious.

As a child, the two TV channels we had never showed Mr. Rogers. But we did have a lovely Canadian counterpart by the name of Dr. Dressup! I loved Ernie Coombs! Turns out Mr. Rogers and Mr. Dressup were good friends in real life, with Mr. Rogers helping Mr. Dressup star on the Canadian version!

Great review, Darla! I watched that show even when I was older because it was so wonderfully calming :o)

That makes sense as Fred Rogers did spend some time in Canada early in his career, didn't he? What a great connection!

Yes! When Rogers was offered a show in 1963 at the Canadian Broadcasting Corporation (CBC), he invited American Coombs to join him in Canada to work on an early version of Mister Rogers' Neighborhood, called Misterogers. How cool!

Thank you, Annette. I would consider him to have been a national treasure. An amazing advocate for children.
