Initially, I didn't give this book a rating, because I couldn't decide whether to give it one star or five. Now that I've had a day to mull this over, I'm giving it a five. Just be forewarned that it's a difficult read, thematically, and might not be to everyone's taste.

This is a fascinating story. The author has clearly done some research, and the historical details are very interesting. This is a gritty environment, and there's no glossing over the realities of prison life. It's well written and I really fell for the characters.

BUT there are some things I wish I had known going into this... (spoilers hidden)

(view spoiler)[The author's first book was a romance with a HEA, so I guess I expected more of the same. Not so. Additionally, there is a rape scene early in the book. It's a brutal moment and very, very difficult to read. I know these may be deal breakers for some readers. (hide spoiler)]
