"Patriotic Englishman. Been here for years. Respected member of the European Traders’ Association. We must have our man in Havana, you know. Submarines need fuel. Dictators drift together. Big ones draw in the little ones."

If there was an award for most unlikely to succeed as a spy, Englishman James Wormold would definitely be in the running! You see, he is a vacuum salesman, whose latest machine, the ‘Atomic Pile Cleaner’, is not selling well due to its unfortunate name. After all, this novel takes place in Cuba during the Cold War but prior to the Cuban missile crisis. With sales down and a beautiful and manipulative teenage daughter to maintain, Wormold is in need of some easy cash. When he is approached by British Intelligence agent Hawthorne to serve as an undercover agent within Cuba, he initially thinks there must be some mistake! What on earth could they want with an ordinary, humble man like himself to serve his home country?

"It always seemed strange to Wormold that he continued to exist for others when he was not there."

It seems Wormold has been given no choice in the matter, however. Hawthorne won’t take no for an answer. As well, his daughter Milly has just purchased a horse and along with a number of other expenses he is compelled to ‘accept’ the position. What follows is a hilarious story of a man who has bitten off more than he can chew! He has no idea what a spy should be doing, and so invents both subagents and reports of covert activities. A number of interesting characters share the stage with Wormold and offer up some entertaining dialogue as well. Before long, much to his dismay, his fiction is becoming alarmingly all too real!

"It astonished Wormold how quickly he could reply to any questions about his characters; they seemed to live on the threshold of consciousness—he had only to turn a light on and there they were, frozen in some characteristic action."

This little novel is highly entertaining. There is humor, adventure, and a little splash of romance. When Wormold’s life and the lives of those he cares about most are in danger, he must act and step up to the plate and play the role of unlikely hero. Does he succeed? Well, read this one and find out! This is my first Graham Greene book, and from what I understand a bit different from his more serious work. It’s a quick read that ought to please just about any reader.

"You should dream more, Mr. Wormold. Reality in our century is not something to be faced."

Julie This sounds really good! Awesome review, Candi!💖

Sara I'm so glad you liked this. It is one of the Greene's I have not gotten to yet, but I have loved several of his books, so looking forward to this one.

Joe Delightful review, Candi. This novel has been on my reading docket for a while and it sounds like a change of pace from The End of the Affair which was too gloomy and morbid for me. I'm happy whenever anyone goes retro and picks up a 20th century novel.

Julie G Wormold!! I love it. I've started this one (twice, actually) and have gotten nowhere with it. I'm happy to hear about the humorous aspects of it, that might be the inspiration I need to try harder.

Jaline Fabulous review, Candi! I actually chuckled out loud while reading your review - and, of course I had to add it to my wishlist, too! 🌼😊

Thank you, Marita! The farther I became immersed in the story, the more I realized this was not your ordinary spy novel!

Sara, this is the perfect choice for when you need something to lighten the mood a bit. Since it was my first Greene book, I have no way of comparing to his other work. I'd be interested whether it works as well for someone that is already familiar with his writing :)

Thanks so much, Joe. I just used this book to satisfy a challenge - 'book you would recommend to a man'. So, I am now officially recommending this to you! I also just added the movie to my watchlist. I think it will transfer well to the screen!

I loved that name too, Julie! It's perfect for this guy. I have to admit, when I first started this I was a bit confused. I'm perhaps not the sharpest pencil in the box, because I didn't realize it was poking a bit of fun at the business of spying. Once I caught on, I was hooked!

Thank you, Jaline! I'm happy that I managed to add a little laughter to your evening. I have a feeling this will entertain you just as much as it did me!

message 17: by Laysee (new)

Laysee Candi, I kept saying ‘Oh no, Oh no’ when I read your description of vacuum cleaner spy coughing up fictional reports. Fab review. I have not read Greene in years and this might be a good one to get reacquainted. Thanks, Candi.

Laura Wonderful review - you certainly capture the humour and quirkiness of it - I loved that his inventions start to take over. And a "splash of romance" - very nice.

Diane Barnes I read "Travels With My Aunt" by Greene many years ago and loved it for the same reason. It was light, entertaining, and funny. I'm not really a fan of spy novels, but I might like this one.

Angela M is taking a break. Fabulous review, Candi. Love that last quote,

Thanks, Renata! It's perfect to learn just a little about the country; the story has a lot of atmosphere to it as well which adds to the charm :)

Wormold really blunders along in this one! So many funny little 'incidents'. I really can't wait to sample more of Greene's work now. I hope you find this one a pleasure if you get a chance to read it, Laysee. And thank you :)

Candi Laura wrote: "Wonderful review - you certainly capture the humour and quirkiness of it - I loved that his inventions start to take over. And a "splash of romance" - very nice."

Thank you very much, Laura. Quirky is a great word to describe this book! The characters are all so colorful, and I love how both Greene and Wormold brought many of them to life :)

Celia Love the review, Candi. I have this on my tbr already and with your encouragement, hope to get to it soon.

I have that one on my list too, Diane - it sounds wonderful. I think readers of the genre would likely consider this one a 'light' spy novel. I suspect you might enjoy yourself if you ever decide to read it :)

Lisa How can you not laugh at a hero named Wormold?
I still haven't gotten to Greene, though this sounds like a more light-hearted way to start. I appreciate your enjoyable review.

message 45: by David (new)

David Crumm For Greene fans, this was one of his most successful film adaptations, which occasionally shows up on TCM, streams on some services and is out there on DVD and Blu-ray, too. It has a stellar cast starting with Alec Guinness, Noel Coward, Burl Ives, Ernie Kovacs and Maureen O'Hara. Well worth a watch.

You really can't keep yourself from chuckling, Lisa! :D I've not yet read Greene's other work, but I'm sure this is a lot more light-hearted as you've said. The themes in the other books seem a lot heavier for sure. Thanks a bunch!

Good to know, David! I'll look out for it :)

Left Coast Justin Candi, there's this guy named Le Carre -- you've heard of him, perhaps? -- who updated this story in The Tailor of Panama, just in case this type of plotline is fun for you. XOXOXO

Le Carre you say? Who’s that?!!! ❤️. Gosh it’s too hard to pick just one LeCarre to read at a time! 😅 xo
