liked it

My initial feelings of interest petered out and by the end, I was left ambivalent.

Carey's writing is punchy and fun, easily the best part of the book. The premise here mixed mystery with the supernatural, one of my favourite styles, but it failed to keep the pacing necessary to maintain my interest. Seemingly long periods of time in the dreamscape/afterlife were hard going and not always relevant.

The finale kicked it all back up again, but I found myself shrugging as I thought about the review. Overall, the book is forgettable.

My thanks to M. R. Carey, Little, Brown Book Group, and Netgalley for this copy in exchange for an honest review.

Clearly there was no God, no justice, nobody at the switchboard. The universe was a badly written soap opera where every plot twist strained credibility just that little bit further."

Mike Hmm, leaving you feeling ambivalent at the end sounds a little disheartening. Had high hopes for this one. Think I'll have to wait for this to hit the bargain tables then. Nice review, Emma. Sorry it didn't turn out better for you.

It's a weird one. Like his other, I think many people will love it. Just not me... I'm sad because I loved his early novels. His Felix Castor series is truly excellent.

Crystal Blu I could not agree more!

Thanks Crystal. It just didn't hold up...

Lois I feel exactly the same as you. Excellent writing but the last 15% of the book or so started dragging. I will check out "The Girl With all the Gifts" sometime soon. Carey is a very good writer and overall I enjoyed Fellside.

I haven't been a huge fan of his new work so I doubt I'll read any more despite the good writing. It'll be interesting to see what you think of the Gifts! I do love his old Felix Castor novels and for me, nothing new lives up to them.
