Nothing like **spoiler alert** The main aspect I appreciated in this book is not how it revived my survivalist instincts, although I value it highly. Nothing like a good post-catastrophe book to remind you to stock up on water, dehydrated food, antibiotics, learn how to use a gun and throw knifes and why not buy a bunker while we are at it. What might stay is the way the narration follows characters, uncovering their connections, sometimes deep sometimes incidental, centered around specific events, which we get to experience from a multitude of point of views, without feeling redundant.
The several decades time span, with chosen events for each character, allowed to follow them through superficial and deep transformations, which I enjoyed.
Read this for a bookclub that my sister also attends so I cannot write too much at this time to not *ruin* (carefully weighted words here) her experience in case she decides to read it despite my indication that it is spoiler-heavy.

Which apparently I had, and so had my two sisters, as we had selected it as one of our last family bookclub readings a couple of years ago. But for some reason we did not debrief it, which would have committed it to our memories. Instead, we apparently all proceeded to swiftly forgetting the content, though my sisters could make the superior claim that at least they remembered reading it.
Reading it in the past couple of days provides the temporary benefit of remembering it now more clearly (I also suspect I didn't finish it the first time as the initial familiarity quickly dissipated).
The book presents the lives of different characters who share a female assignment at birth, predominantly though not exclusively black, of various social classes and relationship orientations. The one-chapter per character structure allows for a dynamic rythm as the author jumps from one personality to another place/time/value system.
Nothing radically new in terms of exposure (though it is the first time for me that I read one and even several depictions of black homosexual lives).
The different characters intersect more or less directly, giving rise to a richer depiction through the multiplicity of perspectives, which to my reading pleasure. Part of the intersection occuring at a specific event while others occur at other points in time in different family branches.
I take the book as an invitation to being open minded and tolerant.
The character who struck me the most is the assertive black woman who ends up in an abusive relationship after leaving her full social circle behind. This story being for me the one where the limits of extreme characters are actually being tested....more

Beyond the raw emotion fix I get from it, I enjoyed the illustration of how much and how wrong you can be when you project from short and therefore necessary limited depictions of a person or a relationship (dating a younger woman, divorced, ...).
A good reminder not to judge other people's relationships and what society agrees on is "normal" or "standard".
I found the writing very efficient at conveying the gap between how people feel, what they think and what they say or how they act. The stream of consciousness, broken / incomplete sentences keeping me in the flow of the reading during the couple of days it took to finish....more

Reading the book, I founStarting the book, I recalled that I had seen the video of the lecture introduction several years ago, and found it inspiring. Reading the book, I found myself much more critical. I definitely see how it could have appealed to my past self. The strong emphasis on creativity, self confidence, challenging the implicit limits of society, pushing yourself academically, cool sabbaticals in companies known for their creative spins, a "let's have fun in the face of anything" without being in denial of his death sentence mentality.
However, reading this in my early twenties I strongly notice the position of privilege the writer is speaking from, even in front of the big equalizers (illness and death). The focus on fun and creativity is pretty high up Maslow's pyramid, and the focus on childhood dreams addresses those who have all the lower levels relatively covered (including my past and current self). He does discuss impacting other people's life (after checking most of his childhood dreams, he enables individuals to do the same through mentorship, and then scales his approach to classes and larger audiences through open source software). But no discussion of people facing difficulties which prevent them from accessing basic needs, including the ones he appreciates so much in this moment (good doctors, palliative care that allows him to be in relatively good shape at this stage of the illness, support from family, partners and peers, financial means that allow him to not spend hours worrying over his family's future). This is all the more surprising to me as it looks like his parents have a culture of charitable involvement.
I found that other aspects of this privileged position transpire when he encourages people not to complain in the chapter "don't complain just work harder". He cites (out of two examples), the achievements of a black American player Jackie Robinson who just worked harder to reach inclusion in the baseball league. "He knew he had to play better than the white guys, and he knew he had to work harder. So that's what he did. He vowed not to complain (...)". This strikes me as potentially harmful, as it could be sending the message that complaining in face of inequality is not part of the solution (which once again, strikes me as very individualistic).
I found this book interesting to read as it reflected back the evolution of my definition of success in life, from "do stuff that cool people find cool" to "do something that helps those who most need it". So not a book I am likely to recommend to anyone for inspiration anymore....more

She goes through several stages, hoping silently, vocalizing her expectations, begging. To no (or limited) effect. To a large extent, she seems caught in her personal narration, living in the myths and exaltation of her matrimonial line. The An entertaining read recommended by a friend who is pursuing a graduate degree in philosophy and who related to the main character to some extent.
The writing is sharp, often funny in its self-critical introspection, while also taking a stab at intoducing several philosophical concepts (sprinkled with a bit of physics and mathematics while we are at it).
Mostly, the book delves into the interiority of a woman that seeks some form of significance, and marries a mathematical genius in the process. Brought up an orthodox jew, the main character also depicts the attempts, successes and setbacks in transcending her education and conditioning.
The balance of concepts and romance made this read which could have felt like a pure indulgence a bit more effortful and (superficially or not I am not sure) rewarding....more

In the absence of superior purpose in his life or others' he is an observer of other's as well as his passions. He judges himself less harshly, if at all, than others, whom he mostly treats with contempt. His knowledge that his pursuits will not bring him much satisfaction beyond instantaneous gratification makes him more of an existentially doomed than a perverse character. I surprisingly got deeply into the book during the second part, which surprised me as I was reading it in Russian, which makes reading slower and more tedious. So after reading a couple of pages sparsely over several months, I finished the second half in less than a day. After all, maybe the classical ingredients are classical for a reason. Mostly, I enjoyed the introspective moments of self-reflection, especially during events, where he describes and analyses his reactions, as well as the meta-moment where he reflects on his reflections....more
