Just something about it implied something improper between the mother and son, and yes, I definitely think more is going on after reading volume 2. The mother is all kinds of messed up... from pushing her nephew off the cliff to getting so upset over the cute note her son received from the girl to them making him tear it up with her and pulling him on the bed with her and kissing him on the lips. Just. Gross. The way the manga is illustrated with so many close up shots of the faces and parts of the faces is really unsettling for some reason. On to volume 3....more

I went into this book without having any expectations about it. Sci Fi and alien stories are hit and miss a lot of times but this one had a great balance and really played on how our existence could collide with alternate realities full of monsters that we cannot understand. Even a couple of weeks later when I saw this book, I could still remember details from it and character interactions, which is a strong sign that it is a book that will stick with you for some time. ...more

A large portion of the This was was talking about in the horror FB group I'm in so I grabbed it without doing any real research on what it was about. A large portion of the book is about this older man named Josef who is nearing death. He has a secret though and he ends up sharing it with a co-worker/friend, Robert. The secret has a long lead-in in which Josef recounts his story of being a Holocaust survivor.
At the same time, Robert seems to be struggling with his personal life. His mother is dying, he has TWO boring jobs that seem to be going nowhere and that won't support him (or barely will) once his mother is gone, and he has no real love prospects. Just one girl he works with but he can't seem to make anything happen.
I really enjoyed the historical aspects of this book and, to an extent, the current day struggles with Robert and Josef that lead us to the conclusion of this book. However, by the time the ending came, it felt rushed. I don't want to spoil anything for anyone, but I definitely wanted more after what I went through to get there. ...more

This looks like such a small book but there is so much information on this case that it was really hard to absorb and follow with all the various people associated with the case, as well as the numerous theories on what happened, who dun it, and why. It's sad and unfortunate that to this day, still, the case remains unsolved. There were quite a few mistakes made from the onset and there is speculation that if, perhaps, some of those mistakes had not been made, it might have been solved, but I'm not sure. Even with advances in technology it still remains unsolved. My heart aches for the families who lost their loved ones to such a senseless crime. ...more

I think I would consider this book a slow burn. It has been interesting but slow paced IMO. I like how we get the story leading up to a trial and then we get to see/hear the trial and then experience the aftermath. I just cannot imagine living back then when even a fork is considered suspicious.
Great story, slow burn, even better ending. :) I always appreciate audiobooks with multiple narrators....more

I had a few suspicions but without spoiling anything I was partially right and partially wrong so the book did not disappoint in the end.
Cass comes across as an unreliable narrator, and for good reason. We learn her mother died young from early-onset dementia and Cass begins to suffer from similar symptoms. She begins forgetting routine things: purchases she made, social engagements, gifts bought, even how to use household appliances. At the same time, fear and paranoia have taken over because she believes she may have been witness to a murder, or at the very least was in the presence of the victim right before or after she was murdered. Suddenly, she starts receiving strange phone calls which she suspects are the murderer.
Due to her memory problems and her paranoia, her and her husband consult a doctor and she is put on some medication which basically knocks her out each day. Strange things continue to happen.
It's probably not until the last 25% of the book when things really start getting good and towards the end, I could not stop listening! ...more
