Telfer's book suffers from not really being sure what it should be: is it humorous? Is it trying to prove a point? Is it a study of the macabre? Perhaps it wants to be all three, and that's the problem: the humor feels incredibly inappropriate in the context of the horrific crimes being described, and so the book feels voyeuristic in an unpleasant way. Even coming in to this story 2/3rds of the way in, I found the plot easy to follow and the characters easy to get to know -- and what wonderful main cEven coming in to this story 2/3rds of the way in, I found the plot easy to follow and the characters easy to get to know -- and what wonderful main characters in Pen and Mark, and how interesting to follow the ultimately very sweet romance between them.
I also really enjoyed the portrayal of Pen; this was the first romance I had read featuring a non-binary character....more
