The idea seemed cute. The opening chapter continued to seem cute. Then the prose following chapters of the following several chapters all felt very voicy and repetitive in a way that was a total turn-off for me. It didn't feel like the prose of a well edited novel.

I had this book borrowed from the library for three weeks. I was excited to start it and read 5 chapters in my first sitting. About two weeks later I I had this book borrowed from the library for three weeks. I was excited to start it and read 5 chapters in my first sitting. About two weeks later I read two more chapters. Libby was like, "Hey, you've only got three more days to finish this book before it gets returned!" and I was like, "ugghhhh but I don't want to read it....."
So I made that once-in-a-blue-moon decision to DNF this one. It's not...bad. I mean, it was nominated for the Booker Prize (which is why I picked it up) but ugh I just didn't care. Another reviewer said the story was unfortunately limited as it tried to make the main character go through events similar to the life of Jesus, and I can totally see that. The writing was nice, but I had no compulsion to keep reading. I'm going to spend my time with other things that make me feel emotions beyond tiredness. :)...more

I wanted to badly to like Kira. I tried to pick up the physical book and read to make it go faster, but without Hale reading it to me, it garnered NO appeal. There were some really interesting things in this book, but it just wasn't enough for me to make it through another 500 pages worth of novel....around 20 hours of listening time. I hate to DNF. But I'm really just ready to move on. I was unimpressed with Paolini's Inheritance Cycle and while he has clearly grown as a writer here, it just wasn't enough. Everything is too derivative and flat.
