A former train engineer, Lacey's just come off a three-year stint in prison, sent there by a forest ranger who wrongly helped convict her of a crime she didn't commit. So now she's at home working with her brother at their tree farm, when who shows up to buy a Christmas tree? None other than the Forest Ranger, Austin, who helped send her to prison. She is understandably upset with the man, and tells him in no uncertain terms. But when he comes to her begging for her help to get a train back to working condition for his soon-to-be-nephew to enjoy for the camp his family puts on, how can she say no?

As the two work together, Austin starts to, very reluctantly, realize he may have misjudged her 3 years ago. He's starting to respect her work ethic, her no-nonsense attitude toward all the hard work she puts in, and he's even started realizing he's attracted to her. He can't possibly be attracted to someone he put away, can he? And Lacey cannot possibly be attracted to the man who helped convict her, can she?

This is an interesting, fresh take on the standard holiday romance. Not only are Lacey and Austin in different circumstances than the usual feel-good holiday story, but they behave differently, too. But that's a very good thing because this take is a wonderful read. Lacey in particular, is a great character - strong, sassy and willing to forgive when most wouldn't. I had a hard time with Austin at first, but I soon could understand why Lacey forgave him, because he has a big heart, and the way he loves his family is swoony! If you are in the mood for a holiday story that's a bit out of the box, I highly recommend you give Three Nights Before Christmas a read.
