Sadly, I was unable to finish this book. I tried for almost a week to read it, hoping I would get past my disconnect to the story and characters. Eventually I couldn't force it any longer. The secret society called the Wise Women that Freya was a part of was a vague idea that felt odd and out of place in a historical romance. I knew she was some sort of spy, and there were elders in the group called Hags. They were mistakenly accused of being witches, and were fighting a group who was trying to pass a "witch act." This is the first book in the series, so readers start out knowing absolutely nothing, and it's imperative that readers have history and backstory explained to them so they're not floundering in confusion. But the little details we are told made me feel as if I had stepped into a fantasy novel by mistake. Assassins are called nemains, their enemies were called Dunkelders, and spies were machas. Why?? I kept asking this question to myself a lot, and it didn't help that Freya's personality grated right from the start. It's really hard to become invested in a story when you can't care for the characters.
