As with many of these books, while the characters are pretty moral, some issues are just ignored and there is a lot of self-justification.
If you are looking to hand this to younger readers, I think parents should also have a discussion with their kids about the stereotypical way African Americans are portrayed in this book (uneducated servants who don't have a lot of sense). Kids shouldn't think this doesn't accurately reflect the hearts and souls of people who were relegated to menial work in those days. It reflects a culture that cast them in a bad light to justify their action and not educate those who deserved it as much as their own children.
Content notes: some minor pairing/hints a possible future romance. People pull pranks and don't see to see the harm they did/the sin of lying. There was a 'ghost' party that a little odd and I would have hated as a teen....more

However, I wasn't feeling good and I already had this audiobook. I'm happy to report I loved this book. It starts out with a lie, which I didn't like, but I was so happy when the truth came out quickly and there was repentance over the lie. Overall, this is a sweet story of showing love to others. There is a very mild romantic thread. ...more

Yes, it was interesting and kept me reading, but there were also times I felt tantalized by the personal lives of the characters, only for the story to return to the legal side and drop the promise entirely. While the book was clean, I'm not sure why it is listed as a Christian novel. There is a pastor as a minor character, but faith plays no role in the entire story. If you like legal books, this would be a great one. Personally, it fell a little short for me....more

I love how Mellinger dealt with the issue of too much intersection not with psychology or trait Bible study, but with shifting focus in such a practical way from ourselves to our Savior. This book was yet another on suffering I had on my Kindle. This one is good, because it's for everyone. If you feel like your suffering, this book isn't going to ask you if it is really that bad, it addresses all suffering great and small. It did a wonderful job of addressing it too.
My only issue with this book is the author obviously had a bitter taste in his mouth over a couple of things, accountability groups and partners being one of them. I didn't see the need to get distracted bashing those things.
Overall, one of the better books on suffering....more

This was a book put together by Grace Livingston Hill and Evangeline Booth to raise funds for the Salvation Army for all they were doing for the soldiers coming back from the war. I think they used the word romance, not in the romantic sense, but in the sense of old romantic novels ~ the showing of all that is noble and beautiful in life. Since I went into it knowing what I was getting into, I enjoyed this peek into the work of a Christian group. I learned new things and saw the war through different eyes.
This is a worthwhile read, just know what you are getting into. Oh, and I would skip the letters of support at the end. They were dull....more

I mean, I liked Luke in the previous stories and I liked the parts with him. I also really liked Ellie and how she worked hard to change herself and choose a new path in life after some big mistakes. But Luke and Ellie... Honestly, I didn't really love...them. Oh, there were sections I adored, but mostly it was just them obsessively thinking about kissing each other or trying not to think about kissing each other. This was so sad because when they weren't just acting like two hormone-driven teens, they were epic together. They worked well and complemented each other wonderfully. But kissing and hints at other stuff took up most of the page. I don't mind kissing or thinking about kissing in my fiction, but I want the romance to have depth and solidness before and beyond the kissing. This one came so close and yet fell so short. This book was worth reading if nothing else to continue the conversations between the siblings. I could read a lot more books about these siblings. Why do series have to end at the wedding?
Content notes: A lot of talk about kissing as well as some extended kissing scenes. Some mentions of some inappropriate situations and photos in Ellie's past (shown as something she has repented of and left behind). A couple of vague hints of wanting to do more than kissing, a couple of which felt like honest struggles and a couple that felt pointlessly awkward. ...more

This book was the same. I wish that more of the biblical insight had been framed by Underwood's personal story and what it meant to him in the moment. As it was, I don't feel like I have a good grasp on his personal journey and there were some sections of where he pulled more out of the scripture than was there or twisted it to make it say something. especially, some of his comments about Martha had me lifting a brow and why this guy hated her so much. I still think if you are overwhelmed by pain, this book might have some value for you, but I also think there are better books out there. ...more

This was a good conclusion to the series. One of the things I love is how Vetsch wove such a wonderful cast of characters and interconnected stories through the series. I made each installment more enjoyable because you got to know the world of these characters better each time.

Yes, more happens in the last third but oddly enough, I still found it dull. I did find this novel worth reading for its historical significance and because it is so frequently referenced in other works. Also, his faith in God was beautiful.
