I've been very vocal about my dislike of romance. In my opinion it's usually just not well done, or at least, done in a way I can't deal with.

I don't like how overdone insta love, love triangles or romance that happens five pages into the book are. I don't have time to want anyone to get with anyone. I don't have time to care.
With that said, in this novella we get a beginning of romance. No cringy sex scene or anything but just enough for me to start shipping some people. There's more to it, we get a bit of a murder-mystery related to the series but....
I'm shipping them hard now.
I'm curious to see how things will evolve in the last book of the series!...more
This started off really good but it slowed down towards the end. I was happy there was some connection to the Bill Hodges series (which I li3.5? 3.75?
This started off really good but it slowed down towards the end. I was happy there was some connection to the Bill Hodges series (which I liked a lot and recommend you read first since there are some spoilers here!) but I was overall underwhelmed.
"Just for that, I shall hunt your firstborn and laugh with glee as I tell them of your death in terrible detail, with many unpleasant adjectives!”
You "Just for that, I shall hunt your firstborn and laugh with glee as I tell them of your death in terrible detail, with many unpleasant adjectives!”
You know how sometimes you realize you’ve read 500 pages and it was all fluff, nothing really stands out and you can't even remember most of it?
Well this book was the opposite.
So much happens, the characters are flawed but their growth is fascinating to watch. The story is complex and becomes more interesting as it progresses. Every time I thought I knew where things were going… I was wrong. And happy to be.
The teenage angst, an hilarious sentient ship, the lack of romance… This is how you create a fantastic YA book! Sanderson is not afraid to make you laugh... and cry.
(2.5) Well this was a disappointment but I suppose it's partly my fault.
I didn't realize this was a Middle Grade book which isn't my cup of tea. Schwa(2.5) Well this was a disappointment but I suppose it's partly my fault.
I didn't realize this was a Middle Grade book which isn't my cup of tea. Schwab's forte is her writing in my opinion and unfortunately a MG book doesn't show it AT ALL.
This was a quick read and a little girl seeing ghosts wasn't uninteresting but I wouldn't recommend it unless you are 12 or under, or usually love MG....more
I've read a lot of uncomfortable books but I guess this is where I draw the line. If you're into step-parents being in sexual relationships DNF at 60%
I've read a lot of uncomfortable books but I guess this is where I draw the line. If you're into step-parents being in sexual relationships with their step-children, then this is the book for you.
I still recommend his other books, specifically The Kind Worth Killing but this is a hard pass.
Update: Since people can't take a joke. It's not the relationships that are the problem, it's the pace. After 60% barely anything has happened, I'm bored and not at all intrigued. His other books were simply better. The relationships seem to be there just for the shock value and I'm tired of that as much as the alcoholic unreliable wife. I listened to it as an audiobook, so it might have not helped but after raving about his work I'm extra salty about it!...more
(3.5) I found this book incredibly relaxing and comforting. Not what I would expect to say about a Sci-fi but Chamber's universe is so wholesome.
If yo(3.5) I found this book incredibly relaxing and comforting. Not what I would expect to say about a Sci-fi but Chamber's universe is so wholesome.
If you enjoy contemporary "slice of life" type of books, you need to give this series a shot. It's beautiful, not exactly my cup of tea, but enjoyable nonetheless....more

Probably my favorite book by V E Schwab. Loved the story, loved the superpowers, loved the strong messed up female characters, loved that the story was told backward, loved the flashbacks.
Book 2 was even better than the first one. Can't recommend this enough!
