The premise of an Out danseur needing political asylum from his home country is very late-1970's to me. Remember Nuryev? Baryshnikov? Gudinov? Only one was gay but this story made me think of them and countless others over the ages. True, marriage to another male was not available then, so I looked forward to this. I was bored. Don't expect much-- these guys fall in love with each other-- and you'll not be disappointed.
I was happy that Victor got Isaiah to be more open about his sexuality but too little too late....more

It's stories like this that I love/want more of and that give me hope for the future of Acceptance.

What is truly fascinating is these are real people under real pressure: do you know what goes on with your next-door neighbor? Have you any idea that the couple in the next building are that psychotic to win?? It's amazing!! You realize something has to happen but when it does, wow. (One person buys another's freedom from their partner-- and doesn't get the irony that they are as twisted.)

This is the flip side of that coin: if you really knew the sacrifices you'd be called upon to make, you'd just shiver, "No". Our MC always needed approval and finally decides to go to NYC to get some. After she is there, she begins a relationship with an older, sophisticated man she met in her Old Life named Jon. As the relationship builds, we see her beginning to slowly grow as a performer, a choreographer and as a person. Jon is controlling her by fattening her up (through forceful eating) and making her more dependent upon him to the exclusion of others. (He is especially jealous of straight men.) She finally has enough when she becomes pregnant-- he alludes to a vasectomy, but never comes out and says it. She never tells Jon, instead having a quiet miscarriage on the eve of her debut.
This is called The Piece but it is so much more. It is about her missing piece, the dance piece, the piece he tries to forcibly take from her, et cetera.
I recommend this story for all dance lovers and for anyone that's had someone in their corner, but really not.
