In the opening chapters the children who lose their father (having already lost their mother previously) in a huge storm. Good thing these scrappy kids are martial arts experts, sailing experts, treasure hunting experts, and one of them memorizes boat repair manuals for fun!
Oh, wait -- lost me there. I know it's written as a farce, but I have a lot of trouble getting through stories where the kids know more than any ten adults put together....more

All of the stories are hilarious, and some of the characters are nothing short of masterful.

Also has no characterization to speak of, and the writing leaves out just enough detail that you're never quite sure what's going on. For example, in one scene one character slides down a shaft. He talks to the other characters, who are presumably still at the top of the shaft. Next thing you know, the characters at the top of the shaft appear to be in the same room as the original faller, with no mention of how they got there....more

This is a book about the Idea -- kind of a hawk back to some of the great science fiction authors of the mid twentieth century (Asimov, Arthur C. Clarke, etc.). In this book, the idea is that a brilliant scientist discovers a way to travel to an apparently infinite number of alternate earths, none of which (for some unexplained reason) have no humans.
The idea is fascinating. Unfortunately, it suffers some of the same problems as the stories of the early 20th century sci-fi writers-- particularly weak characterization....more
