We follow three children as they explore a tree in a forest, that they can see from their tower block. It's a celebration of tower blocks, a way to teach kids to embrace and love where they come from, even if it is a flat at the top of a concrete block.
I also just need to reiterate how pretty the illustrations are in here, especially the ones in the trees with the lovely purples and blues....more

This is a very individual story, it is all about Spiegelman's father and his experiences during World War 2 as a Jewish citizen of Poland. I loved how intricate and intimate this book is, I also thought the way Spiegelman breaks the fourth wall by talking about the comic he's writing in the comic is a brilliant piece of storytelling.
I cared about the family and friends and the people he met in passing, I was horrified but also comforted by how this man coped with one of the worst situations a human being could be in. It was more humorous than expected, Senior Spiegelman was a massive character and had a way with words. It was also very stark and to the bone, pulling no punches about how horrible and horrific things got. Reading about having to walk over dead bodies to get to the toilet was absolutely chilling, and even though on the surface the artwork seems quite sketchy and loose, the panels that showed the horror hit hard.
Even though this is based around the worst parts of Senior Spiegelman's experiences, the graphic novel has an over all feeling that is uplifting, and celebrates the life and history of him and his family.

But thIt's been a while since I read volume two, but I'm half in the mind to think it would still make little sense even if I'd read it right before! But that's kind of the draw with Scott Pilgrim - it's so whimsical, silly, nonsensical and fun.
The vegan powers made me giggle out loud, as did the 'punch off your highlights' panel.
At the start I was leaning towards 3 stars, because of being confused about what was going on and not really remembering the previous volume, but as soon as it kicked into the evil ex I was drawn in hook line and sinker. It's just a lot of fun....more

The growth of the quality of art is amazing to see! The characters look so different from page one to the last panel, so it's really nice to see the story and the creators grow throughout. definitely recommend to anyone that likes slice of life comics, adorable characters and a fun plot line...and also gay....more

This was a fun little read, I really enjoyed the art style and the humour - perfect for kids and adults to grin at! All the characters have their own style and personality, and there are a few twists in here regarding who's side - good or bad - certain players are on.

TI found this web comic yesterday and spent the next few hours getting caught up on over a years worth of posts. Can't wait for the next installment! The art is simple but beautiful, I love the way Alice uses flowers and leaves to connect panels. And the story is super cute and adorable. No unnecessary angst, no pointless plot devices, just a really heartwarming read. Recommend! ...more

I really enjoyed the comic aspect, and thought the art style worked well as a '16 year old boy draws super heroes' kind of thing. It was fun to see the dark edges getting closer as I read on, knowing I'll be treated to a bit more of Graphite soon enough!
I was not expecting such a violent attack part way through the book, mostly because I never read synopsis's, but the attack and the aftermath really got under my skin and made me angry and upset for our characters (in a good way, I felt there was enough of a connection to care about what happened to the characters(view spoiler)[I especially got irritated at those damn cops and the vice principal!! (hide spoiler)]
There were a few twists in here, some were kind of obvious, but some were a nice surprise
I loved how awkward our main character Adrian was when around his crush, and later on in the book when he starts dating, I love how awkward they BOTH are! It seems a lot more ~based in reality~ than the usual perfect kiss / perfect conversations / perfect flirting / perfect make-out-bed-sesh that happens in most books about teenagers, as if any 16 year old with no experience is going to be that smooth! ...more
