It also brings in the fight of indigenous populations to protect land that has generational spiritual importance to them being subject to power of the oil and gas industry that thinks nothing of putting a pipeline right through the middle of it. All of this is wrapped in kind of mystery/thriller that I've come to expect from WKK.
Also unfortunately, with a long standing series like this with characters that I've come to think of as friends their lives change like for better and worse like my friends and family.
I can't recommend this series, this book included, enough.
Many thanks to NetGalley, Goodreads, and Atria Books for providing me with a copy of this book in exchange for my honest opinion....more

And this was not what I expected but I guess a lot can happen in 12 years. He is still an great writer but his only other 3 books centered around a member of the Russian Secret Police in the 1950's who is looking for a serial killer while his country refuses to acknowledge that crime exists in their utopian socialist society.
This book starts out with 3 quick historical vignettes about Antarctica we find ourselves in Portgual where college student, Liza, is on vacation with her family and catches the eye of a local tour guide. They spend maybe a couple of hours together on his boat as star crossed soul mates before returning to shore to discover that aliens have invaded the earth. WHAT?!?! The aliens have given everyone 30 days to get to Antarctia - or else suffer the consquenses aka death.
They make it to Antarctia to find a literal traffic jam of boats, submarines, cruise ships, planes, tankers, helicopters, etc. They hopscotch their way to shore with mere moments to spare. Now the earths survivors have to find a way to survive and rebuild on this hostile land.
And that's where I will stop with the description because that's were it starts getting really weird - like before was just kinda weird. As I said the book is really well written so it makes it easy to keep going as the book turns in to issues of ethics, morality, belonging, and what it's like to be an outsider. If you can suspend belief fairly easily I do think it's a good read that will make you think about society and what's acceptable and at what costs.
Thank you Goodreads for picking me to win a copy of this book!...more
