Most of the book was quite slow—at least, slower than I found AN EMBER IN THE ASHES or A REAPER AT THE GATES, certainly. There were also a few nitpicky prose things that I had issues with that left me wondering if the prose was really the problem and it had gone downhill, if I was just not in the mood to read this type of book, or if I had grown since I started this series and no longer found it quite as dazzling as I once did.
Anyway, the last 50 or so pages left me sobbing. There were some really good lines in there that really resonated with me. That pretty much summed up the reasons why this series is near and dear to my heart, even if I was a little disappointed with most of this one. I also love how much the characters have grown and changed throughout the series. Helene, Laia, and Elias are very different people than they were in the beginning of the series. They should be; they’ve been through a lot.
I’m 99% sure that most of what I’ve written here is completely incoherent at this point, as it’s 2am and I’ve spent most of the day today reading and the last 20 minutes crying and trying to stay awake. I might go back and write a more thorough series review under my review for AN EMBER IN THE ASHES later. We’ll see. ...more
