Obviously, there were a lot of upsetting things that were included. The story wouldn't be complete without also going over the horrors of the past (and today). I liked the occasional humor that was used. Yes, there was a lot of text but that's to be expected given the subject. Overall an excellent read.
I encourage everyone to read this book. Just know there are different versions (a remixed one, the original, one for kids, audiobooks). I understand that a graphic novel might not be for everyone. I love that there are options for people to pick from....more
I was expecting a bit more from this. From the description I thought this would be a bit more about the magic elements.
Really this was about a woman I was expecting a bit more from this. From the description I thought this would be a bit more about the magic elements.
Really this was about a woman healing from an abusive relationship. Throughout the story she often puts herself down and recalls key moments from her time with her abusive partner.
It was a good story overall, just not what I was expecting. If you decide to read this think of it more as a woman healing with little sprinkles of magic thrown in. Still an enjoyable read. I'd read from this author again....more

First of all, I loved how weird this was (it could have even been weirder).
I enjoyed the eerie atmosphere this had. The horror of being alone in space and the unknown. I really liked a lot of elements that were in the story. If you're interested in reading this, go in knowing as little as possible and stop reading this review here.
Overall I liked the story but I felt that certain things could have been developed more. This could definitely have been longer to give us more of the creepy space atmosphere, to develop the relationship between Ami and Dorian, expand the mystery of what was happening, etc. I wouldn't suggest going into this thinking it's a romance. It's a sci-fi horror novella. It's being compared to Crimson Peak because if you strip away the space elements, it has some of the gothic tropes (kind of).
I'd still recommend this to those that like their horror weird. Those that like the movie Event Horizon, Crimson Peak. This also reminded me of an anime anthology movie called Memories (specifically the first mini movie Magnetic Rose).
I'll be thinking about this one for a while. The premise was just so good....more

It's about a girl named Annie Lane who is murdered & comes back from the grave to seek revenge. We follow Annie as she realizes something is wrong with her. Then as she starts putting together the memories of her last night alive. Finally, to who killed her.
This is one of those books that you want to devour as quickly as possible but at the same time you don't want to leave the characters behind. All of the characters were interesting, especially Annie's friends.
I love the world that the author created. Little details like the Evil Dead Shed were *so good*...more

I’ve read two other books by this author and after reading a third, I can safely say I’m in love with the world the author created. If you haven’t already, check out Blood and Bargains and its sequel Deceit and Devotion.
Duty and Desire is a sapphic romance between a witch named Maggie and a faerie knight named Yvaine. Without giving anything but the premise away, I’ll just say that Yvaine kidnaps Maggie. Hilarity and romance ensue.
One of the things I loved about this book was how well the characters were written. The author has a way of writing that makes readers become quickly invested in the fates of the characters. For example, Henry was adorable. He didn’t have to be on the page for long before readers care about him.
For all the romance readers, this book is full of fun tropes. It’s an enemies to lovers story with forced proximity and a grumpy sunshine dynamic (those are right up my alley) Although I would say I’m not a huge romance reader, I’ve really enjoyed reading all of Darling’s books. The love stories she writes aren’t insta love, they’re slowly developed throughout the story.
The only complaint I have is that I wish the book was a bit longer, only because I wanted to explore the world a bit more. I’m glad that the author mentioned that these characters will be back. The author also said there will eventually be a crossover between the characters from Duty and Desire and the Blood and Bargain series. I’m looking forward to reading any books set in this world.
I’d recommend this book to anyone who is looking for a well written fantasy sapphic romance.

“They say something lives out here. Some people call it a man. Some people call it a monster. Some people call it...the Beast of Backcountry.”
Jenna is determined to save her best friend Reese after she’s taken by something or someone on a camping trip. The police are saying Reese ran away and the adults in her life don’t believe Jenna’s story. Jenna joins a new troop (the Owlet Scouts) and goes back into the forest. The troop finds footprints near the camp, scratch marks on trees, strange sounds in the night, etc. Jenna and her new troop must stick together to survive. Will Jenna ever see Reese again? Is the Beast of Backcountry really stalking them or is it something else?
If you’re looking for the perfect book for summer or to transition into fall with, this is it. It was cozy and relaxing for some of the camping scenes and full of dread and tension for moments where the creature was terrorizing the scouts. The pace was just right.
I really enjoyed the descriptions of all the camping. It made me feel as though I was there with the Owlet Scouts even though I’ve never been camping. This book made me want to try it. Maybe.
I loved the use of mixed media in the book, including a blog, survival guides, police transcripts, etc. They added a fun touch to the book.
The characters are well written and realistic. The children don’t just suddenly become superheroes in the face of danger. They are able to overcome their fears by facing them.
This is middle grade horror done right. It’s well written and engaging enough to keep an adult entertained. For parents, if their children read Goosebumps, this could be the next step in their horror journey. For adults this will be a nice palate cleanser from more intense horror.
I’d recommend this to anyone who loves cryptids, summer, camping, stories about friendships. This would also be a good book for someone younger just getting into horror. It’s not too graphic and the ending was just right.
