I’ve been a huge fan of the author’s Mediterranean sailing books for decades, so imagine my excitement to discover he’d written fiction as well under a pseudonym. I really enjoyed this story, a weave of three stories that become one by the end. It would have earned the 5th star if there hadn’t been some typos and slips of tense or POV, any of which normally stop me from reading on, but the story and characters kept me engaged, and I needed to know what had really happened. No spoiler if I say that the killer wasn’t the person I expected it to be. ...more

…Good in parts, but badly let down by editing. So many typos, punctuation errors, misuse of words. I managed to keep going to the end because the plot is good (mostly) but it read more like a first draught than a finished novel and the characters felt a bit wooden as if they weren’t quite fully developed yet. I am an author too, so maybe I’m less forgiving of grammar mistakes and typos than I might otherwise be. We all make them, but usually iron them out before publication. If this had been a free ebook or even 99p, I might be less judgy but to pay almost £5 for it! Publisher is taking the p**s. ...more

Thoroughly enjoyable story, but it dropped a star for the slightly erratic grammar and the habit the author has of slipping between points of view. The plot and most of the characters were sufficient, on the whole, to keep my attention but I did tsk to myself a number of times when errors distracted me from the story. I began with a later book in the series (Ms James' grammar and tendency to head-hop is slightly better in later books), and now I'm reading the whole series from the beginning. Can't be that bad, then! I definitely intend to read on because Clara is adorable....more
Another brilliant police procedural from this talented author.
Once again, I thoroughly enjoyed this book. After reading Closer to Home, I went out of Another brilliant police procedural from this talented author.
Once again, I thoroughly enjoyed this book. After reading Closer to Home, I went out of my way to read Heleyne's other books. They're excellent, but these two are my stand-up favourites. Her characters are very real, her plots keep you guessing to the last and her writing is a pleasure to read. Another, Please, Heleyne! I bought this book on pre-order (not an ARC), and have no connection whatsoever with the author -- apart from a love of good crime writing. Highly recommended. ...more
