It took the television show to force it to the top of the pile, because I am that book snob who knows TV is a different experience - sometimes as good although not the same as the book, often failing mightily to reach even the lowest rungs of the book appeal, and rarely hitting an equivalence to the book.
It’s a very good story, albeit full of the suspend your disbelief moments. And, I’m thankful that although the entire trilogy seems centered around a vampire/human love story - or at least, cold blood vampire/warm blood witch love story, it is leagues better than the twinkling teen vamp/human affair of Twilight (ugh) and on par with Charlaine Harris’s Sookie Stackhouse series. Our witch is smart, an historian, and open to learning. Our vamp is also open to learning despite his well over a thousand years of walking the earth. ...more

When the TV series was announced, I figured I'd better get on to reading it, before the TV version could become the baseline. I'm not sure what I expected, and I can say it was not a love story between a vampire and an historian witch of incredible and unknown to her powers. In fact, it was all I could do not to fast forward past the interminable love scenes or speed up the audio so they would go by faster.
Still, I did love the characters - a vampire over 1500 years old, with a library that stretched throughout his life. A witch historian who could appreciate the library, and the knowledge it, and the vampire, contained. Long before the author brought it up, it was clear these two were falling in love. And there are family members on both sides - Diana's aunts, Emily and Sarah. Her ghostly grandmother, and the Bishop house, which defiantly has a mind of its own. Even her parents, ghosts that come to her in her moment of deepest need, and help her understand how to control, and be aware of, her depth of powers.
I didn't end up fast forwarding, or even speeding up the reading - instead I just went along, enjoying every unexpected moment, and quietly smiling thorough the bits that were so darn obvious!
I look forward book 2, and someday, will find a way to view the tv program, too....more

Hundreds of pages of descriptions of beautiful men, extra long therapy like conversations, super hot supernatural sex, violent and dangerous confrontations, and then, exactly what I expected to happen happened. (Well, the Domino business was a surprise, I admit).
I willingly admit describing hot men, hot sex, and what I learned in therapy today pleases me more than the incredible gore of the first few books. ...more

It'sThe narrator shift from one Druid to another - to another, with the introduction of Owen Kennedy - sets this book apart from the earlier volumes. It's interesting to have several adventures going on at once, and for the most part, Luke Daniels does a great job of being the different characters as each narrates their portion. Occasionally, I had to wonder is this Atticus or Granuaile? Usually the character's voice makes it clear quickly, or their respective hound speaks up. Granuaile's Orla is still much more dog in her use of language!!
All in all, this was an excellent entry in this series, and leaves us with a fine conclusion to all adventures, and firm groundwork for the tale as our Iron Druid must find his way out of his next tight spot!...more

They aren't brain surgery by any means - they don't much challenge the brain or thought processes. They do feature some fun mythology (this one is big on the Coyote of the Navaho) and it is also a big transition novel for our Druid friends, who need to disappear and reestablish themselves to continue. And there is Oberon, the wonderful, long living Irish Wolfhound who loves sausages as much as he loves his druid companion. I'll listen to the next one soon! ...more

I must preface by saying that I do love a good vampire story - and this one is sooooo good. It has some gore, an extra large dose of horror, and brings new concepts to the vampire genre.
Sidenote - I've been acquainted with the author for a number of years, and know him to be a brilliant wordsmith and amazingly clever performer with a deep well of prepared bits and the ability to improvise. I own a signed copy of this book, and, when I learned he was reading this audio himself, I checked the audio out from my local library (Support your local library!!! Circulation = budget!!) and slid my signed hardcover from the to be read shelf into the bookshelves of treasured friends. It was totally worth the listen - from the first word he was Joey Peacock and not my well known friend Chris.
If you've never read Christopher Buehlman, start now. He still has one or three I haven't read yet, but I can confidently say no matter which you choose, you will not be disappointed....more

There's a horrible/beautiful vampire (it appears she is not of the glittery variety, and that is certainly a blessing!!) and a police agency that specializes in working with the supernatural crimes. Huh. Who knew? Dresden himself is dry and interestingly presented - eventually I'll tune in to the next one . . ....more
