i liked Rahel a lot better in this one; i find it interesting that she's being eyed askance by the narrative for wanting more than a dark existence. literally her dream is to get to the stars and see them with the ones she loves at her side, instead of living in the dark. it feels like the narrative is demonising her for wanting that, and upholding idiot Bam for wanting nothing but to keep the person he likes at his side, no matter if that means crushing her dreams of the stars and keeping them both forever in the dark while striving for nothing and dreaming of nothing.
the way Rahel tweaks things behind the scenes to prompt Bam to do stuff, tho--that's another thing altogether, and not a great thing.
more than anything in this one, i found myself thinking that SIU must have spent a lot of time in middle-management or as a salaryman, bc the corporate vibes in the Tower are IMPECCABLE, down to the cheating, the senseless obedience and the tricky sidling around the rules while keeping the rules, and the fact that no one really knows what's happening
and obviously, Kkun and Raku remain favourites for obvious reasons...more
as usual, this was deceptively fluffy (while sneaking in deeper themes) and absolutely cosy (while saying quite a lot)
i want to call this a deconstrucas usual, this was deceptively fluffy (while sneaking in deeper themes) and absolutely cosy (while saying quite a lot)
i want to call this a deconstruction of toxic masculinity, but it wasn't so much a deconstruction as it was a bloke going along and deliberately (and at some cost) making the right decision instead of the toxic one; a story where trust and faith triumph over hasty anger, pride, and toxicity--and the male pov really made that aspect shine
i wanted it to be longer so i could have had an even deeper and more nuanced look at the beautiful themes and deconstruction this one had going for it--but it's a novella. and for a novella, it was delightfully deep and deft in the few words it possessed
it was already a decent, satisfying read, and then the last ten minutes of the audio hit and just made it soar above what it already was

one of the things i most love about Claire's sti adored this tiny bite of a story (and you can get it for free if you sign up to Claire's newsletter)!
one of the things i most love about Claire's stories is that she allows her female main characters to be soft and want babies, and to have the strength and resilience that comes along with that want and that choice. i love the beautiful, seemingly-fragile, high-tensile feel of this story
i also adore that she has men who care--in such a natural way--for children ...more

love that Fisk never condescends to his audience, despite writing MG and YA protags. love the richness of the world building. this book is most of the reason why i love scifi so much, and why i read so much of it.
it stands up beautifully to a re-read that has been something like 25 years in the coming

this was fun, the descriptions were truly gorgeous, and as always, i loved that Claire isn't afraid to have children (usually specifically, babies) in her books, and to have those babies loved and wanted and protected by both father and mother
i love that this time around, Claire has given us a fierce and determined female lead rather than a gentle and determined female lead, and i'm even more excited for the Erkling's Daughters now that i know she can also do a good, sharper heroine
so far my favourite of Claire's shorter stories has been Aeronwy's Stolen Child, then When a Dragon Comes Courting just a smidge in front of this one, though the descriptions alone nearly pushed it neck and neck
there's a fade-to-black scene (as you would expect in a Tam Lin retelling)...more
