Stephen King did a good job of laying it all out with character development, the backstory, and delivering progression of the story. The story revolves around a car, Christine, that is bought by a young and naive teenager. The teen, Arnie, quickly became obsessed with Christine.
As the story progresses, both undergo a transformation. Arnie went from being a nerdy low self-esteem type to taking on personality traits and mannerisms of a 1950s Greaser. The car, a 1958 Plymouth Fury, in the beginning was a beat-up rust bucket that barely ran. The car had a mysterious way of repairing itself and taking on a dark and sinister persona. Eventually Arnie and Christine become inseparable and evil overtakes both.
I enjoyed this dark story that had elements of horror and the supernatural. I would recommend this to any Stephen King fan. Thanks!...more

I really enjoyed this psychologically dark story. Todd Bowden was a teenager, who through detective work of his own, discovered an old German man in his neighborhood to be a former Nazi in hiding. Kurt Dussander was the old man who was an SS officer and commandant of a concentration camp during WWII. Initially Todd made a deal with Dussander: to tell him stories from the concentration camps and he wouldn't tell the police. But their relationship soon deteriorated to the point of no return.
Todd began to internalize feelings of antisemitism, sexual sadism, and developed antisocial personality traits to include homicidal urges.
The two main characters developed a codependent relationship based on extortion, lies, and lack of trust. Eventually they need each other to hide the truth as the lies continue to mount in personal and social settings.
I was engaged the whole time and thought the story was suspenseful up until the very end. Stephen King strikes again! Highly recommended! Thanks!...more

I've read other Stephen King short stories and I must confess: he has a way with words and storytelling. Sometimes human emotion is diluted by words and loses its effect. Stephen King however, delivers every time. [image] The story was the inspiration for the 1987 film 'Stand By Me'. The story is a first-person narrative by the main character, Gordon LaChance. He is telling the story many years later as an adult. He reflects about himself and his three best friends during the summer of 1960. The four 12-year-olds are going on a journey to see a dead body. During their journey they experience the full spectrum of human emotion and come out of the journey a little different, a little more mature.
The readability and realism kept me engaged the entire time. I would highly recommend this alongside "Shawshank Redemption" because of the human element layered in the story. Stephen King is a great writer all around: horror and drama. Thanks!...more

As with other Stephen King short stories I've read, this one is really good. Like 'Children of the Corn' and 'Shawshank Redemption', it is entertaining, to-the-point, and very effective. The writing kept he hooked and I was finished before I knew it. [image] The story takes place over a year, with 12 intermittent episodes as the mysterious deaths occur with each full moon. The story is told in timeframes of months and a horrific murder/death happens each time. The towns people have their speculations: a wild animal, a drifter, a deranged person with wolf-monster mask and costume. Eventually our wheelchair-bound hero, Marty, discovers the truth. [image] I honestly liked this better than the 1985 movie 'Silver Bullet'. The movie hit a lot of key points (Grady getting killed while flying his kite at the park, the fireworks scene, Reverend Lowe, and others) but the story flowed better. The book was very readable and quick. I would recommend this to any Stephen King fan. Thanks!...more

The story had a good creepy element to it. The plot flows nicely and readability is good. The author's style incorporates all the characters and they all add something to the story. I wish Stephen King had put more into the backstory of the legend of the Wendigo, the haunted tribal lands, etc. But for what the story presents, it was very good.
There was some fluff that slowed the plot down but still was great overall. I would recommend this to any Stephen King or horror genre fan. Thanks! ...more

I was pleasantly surprised to read this short story as I've only read Stephen King's horror classics. I would definitely suggest this if you enjoyed the movie and want to read the original idea. Thanks! [image] 'Andy Dufresne who waded in shit and came out clean on the other side.' pg. 90...more

The story pretty much follows the movie but does a better job at delivering the eerie Christian-fanatic mixed with pagan elements. [image] The creepy part for me was when main character Burt goes into the abandoned church. The imagery, the altered Bible verses from the Book of Job 38:1-4 to include the verbiage 'He Who Walks Behind The Rows', and the books titled: 'Thus, Let the Iniquitious Be Cut Down So That The Ground May Be Fertile Again, Saith The Lord God of Hosts."
This was a really good one. I definitely recommend this to any Stephen King fan. Thanks!...more

The story started with the leak of a weaponized virus from a Department of Defense laboratory in northern California. One of the security personnel unknowingly became infected and casually sneaks off the Army base with his family before lockdown procedures are activated. Eventually the contagious virus spread throughout the rest of the world and ended in a post-apocalyptic setting.
The story started with this suspenseful opening, moved to various characters, and how the virus spread to devastate the world. There were multiple keys players and backstories. They can seem overwhelming initially and sometimes left me asking 'Where is this going?' but it they all are connected.
The aftermath brings about themes of good vs evil in the people and their interactions. These opposing forces collide throughout the book and make for a pretty cool story. Stephen King did a good job of weaving human character and emotion, horror, suspense, all kinds of violence, tragedy, and dark fantasy. I would recommend it but you have to be patient with it. I enjoyed all the elements, the characters, and the plot. Stephen King did a great job of creating a unique story. It's a cowboy High Plains Drifter-type Western with elements of fantasy, science fiction, and subtle links to our understanding of the world.
The world has 'moved on' and now there is a different future centered around an American 'Wild West' setting. The story presents itself in time-lapses and flashback sequences blended with fantasy, magic, and science fiction while the main character, Roland (a cowboy-type gunslinger) 'chases after the man in black'. Who is the man in black? Why did Roland become a gunslinger and why is he on a mission to get him? The simplicity of the writing forces you to use you imagination to fill in the gaps and enhanced the story (for me at least).
Overall this was a fun story and I was hooked the entire time. I have not seen the movie and I have nothing else to compare this to. I would recommend this to any Stephen King fan and I look forward to reading the next book. Thanks!...more

To be fair, this whole period of his writing was his finest. This overall was a creepy, shocking, and morbid tale. I'm pretty sure everyone is familiar with the story (either the book itself, the 1990 miniseries, the newer 2017-9 film, or by someone bringing it up in conversation) so I'm not going to tell the plot. But, the psychological aspect of the story was great. [image] The terror of the town of Derry was dark and scary. Stephen King did a great job of projection: what scared our heroes in the book was translatable to the reader on some level. There are things in the world that scare us on the individual level as well as within the group dynamic. The story progressed well and was a little slow at times but that did not tale away from the overall effect.
Overall the story was great. The Interlude segments gave backstory to Derry, the It, and the creepy story that painted a horrifying visual as I read. Highly recommended to Stephen King fans. I'd also recommend 'Salem's Lot, The Shining, and other of his earlier works if you liked this one. Thanks!...more
