I was completely absorbed in the fictional story of Isabelle Rosignol, known to the Nazis as The Nightingale, who led shot-down Allied fighting pilots back to safety through the Pyrenees in her work with the French Resistance, and that of her father and sister, also doing resistance work. I loved the detailed historical writing about the brutality of the war on civilians, both Jew and non-Jew, in France and how Isabelle and her family, and many others, were able to hang by threads and survive. Her theme of how war affects families and relationships of all kinds was expressed through well-drawn characterizations of humans both terrified and doing their best in horrifying situations. Hannah wrote a great story about the human spirit under extreme duress, and I highly recommend it....more
