Gilded Ashes was a very eerie, dark and a twisty retelling of Cinderella. I was completely taken with how wonderfully this dark story was executed. Retellings can become trite but this wasn't. It only became darker.
“Love is madness,” I say. “Doesn't everyone agree that you’d do anything, endure anything, to be with the ones you love? So either you’re willing to let them use you with any sort of cruelty, so long as they keep you—which makes you a fool—or you’re willing to commit any cruelty, so long as you get to keep them—which makes you a monster. Either way, it’s madness.”
Maia, our main character is a maid. She does everyone's work and tries to please them as much as possible. But she's also trying to please someone else. Her dead mother. Her dead mother protects her as a ghost who unleashes demons on anyone who can harm her daughter. Pretty cool mother, huh?
But it's not so simple. If Maia ever drops a single tear, whoever caused that tear will suffer so badly that Maia maintains a fake façade of happiness all the time. Her mother is scary when she's unhappy, so scary that she wouldn't wish it on her worst enemies.
[image] *Cue villainous music*
So, in order to make her Stepmother happy, Maia delivers letters from her sister Kore to Lord Anax hoping that they both would marry. And once they do get married, Kore, Thea and her Stepmother will leave her and go live in the Duke's palace. Then, there would be no more pretending. Then, there would be freedom.
So, Maia does everything she can to make sure Lord Anax falls for her sister Kore. But what if things don't go as planned? What if Lord Anax is falling for someone else?
Maia was a good main character. I felt certain similarities between her and the Cruel Beauty's main character (I cannot remember her name). Both of them wanted to please someone or help someone but I guess even in the original fairy tales, the characters were all about pleasing someone. It would have been nice if Maia was rebellious and spunky like Cinder and that story is really a wonderful sci-fi retelling of Cinderella which you simply must read if you haven't read it yet!
This story is also set in the same universe as that of Cruel Beauty and there are brief mentions and appearances of the Gentle Lord. On the whole, this short novella was very interesting and dark, so dark, I still feel creeped out thinking about it!
The Wicked and the Divine has a very interesting concept. It's like a rough spin on something we're are all completWell, hello, gorgeous cover!
The Wicked and the Divine has a very interesting concept. It's like a rough spin on something we're are all completely familiar with: Pop Stars. They're everywhere, they are addicting, they are our idols. In this beautifully illustrated graphic novel, the gods are the pop stars and the pop stars are the gods. Everyone would love to be them, they worship them but alas, they die within two years. They can have all their glory and fame only for two years and they get reincarnated after ninety years.
Don't ask me why. The first volume didn't go into the very fine details of their existence and their reincarnations and all the hows' and whys' but I'm hoping the later volumes would clear all these questions.
This graphic novel contains a lot of characters, most of them are Gods from different religions and folklores. I wasn't too familiar with the Gods themselves but Wikipedia is always our dear old friend.
Meet Laura, our very easy-to-relate to main character:
Laura is human. She's a die-hard fan of the Gods. And she would do anything to be one of them. I can completely understand her. It's always very nice when your main character is easy to understand and connect with.
The story starts off with Laura attending a concert where she is completely mesmerized with a God named Amaterasu who is a sun goddess according to the Japanese mythology. Among the twelve Gods mentioned in this book, she is the only one with a lot of patience and kindness.
[image] Isn't the artwork just utterly beautiful?
It was during this concert that a very famous goddess named Luci (short for Lucifer) speaks to Laura. This incident immediately pulls our main character into a series of completely mysterious events in which Laura is very happy to help the Gods because all she ever wanted was a taste of their powers.
I thoroughly enjoyed this book. I, most of all, loved the artwork. Heck, I think I'm going to sketch these characters because they're so damn beautiful. It's the best artwork I've seen so far.
[image] Just look at the beauty! My fingers are itching for my pencils!
The characters in this book are from different races and they are completely unique and extremely gorgeous and most of them are female. The diversity in these characters is something I also loved very much about because it is quite rare to have so many characters from different races in a graphic novel. These characters stretched and grew so much in this book, it was just so fascinating to watch them.
I feel like this book tries to tell us that celebrities are just as influential as religion and what good we get out of it is the biggest ambiguous question here. Gillen has taken on a very intriguing concept which will stay on the readers mind long after reading.
The characters, to be specific, the Gods are diverse in this book and now I will try my best to explain what powers they have and which mythologies they originate from. (Don't let this extra reading scare you away.)
Luci aka Lucifer:
The Prince of darkness and all things evil is portrayed as an androgynous woman in this graphic novel. She's a very interesting character who is still exploring her various capabilities. I think all the gods are trying to understand how much they can extend themselves. Remember, they didn't sign up for this.
Amaterasu:
Like I mentioned earlier, she is a sun goddess and also one of the kindest among the Gods. She has two brothers, Susanoo who is mentioned briefly in the beginning and Tsukuyomi who is not mentioned so far. According to his book, she spreads this addictive kind of euphoria while she sings in her concerts and that's one of the reasons why everyone just simply adores her.
Sakhmet:
[image] Doesn't she look a bit like Rihanna?
Sakhmet is the lion headed goddess from the Egyptian mythology who is associated with vengeance, warfare, healing and various other things. We don't see much of her in this volume as much as I wanted to.
The Morrigan:
The Morrigan is undoubtedly one of the most interesting characters in this book. She could be extremely confusing if you don't know Irish mythology. She is three people. She switches according to her mood. She's known as the Phantom Queen and is considered to be the goddess of battle and death and also is said to take the form of a crow. It is also said that she can tell who would live and who would die in a battle and this was an inspiration to a very common mythical creature called a banshee whose screams also predict death.
I really liked this character a lot. She was so very intriguing and I cannot wait to know more about her.
Baphomet:
[image] He's kinda hot, isn't he?
He's known as the False God and is associated with paganism and witchcraft. We encounter him briefly in the book.
Baal:
The name Baal is not a specific god but it's used as Semitic term to any god worshipped in the Near East. His symbol is a goat and I honestly don't know much about him. He does make quite a few appearances in the book and his various powers are yet to be known.
Ananke:
She is the destiny decider and a very, very powerful person. She is portrayed as a protector of the Gods in this book and all the decisions regarding them are made by her.
There are several other Gods but they haven't been mentioned a lot in this book and I'm hoping the later volumes will have more info about them.
Even though there are lots to be researched about these gods, I think this is a pretty incredible graphic novel. It would be amazing as a movie or a TV show. (Please make it a movie or a TV show!) I know for certain that this is one of the best graphic novels I've read in 2014 and I very highly recommend it.

A little something I drew from this gorgeous comic. (There will be lots more! I can't wait to sketch the rest of the characters!)

About halfway through this book, I realized that I only kept reading fervently because I subconsciously kept telling myself that this book will get better and there will come a moment where I will realize I love this book. That moment never came and the only thing that did come during my whole reading experience was boredom.
The cover, the blurb, the concept, everything about this book sounds so fascinating when you read about it somewhere else. It makes you want to delve into this book, it makes you want to think that this could be a new favourite of yours.
For example:
“I am the Reaper and death is my shadow.”
If you read something like that and you realize it's from a book a lot of people love, don't you want to think you might love that book as well because that single line said it all?
Or this,
“I would have lived in peace. But my enemies brought me war.”
Don't you want to scream and shout saying this is the book you've been waiting for?
Do you know how hard it is to accept the fact that this book and I didn't click? God, I still want to like this book.
I feel like every YA story needs to have a protagonist who is weak but slowly rises to power. A protagonist who is always the Chosen One. Red Rising is a story about a boy named Darrow who is evidently the Chosen One. He's a low Red, their futuristic world being divided into different colours. So, he has suffered a lot, he has no privileges in life, he is the best Helldiver among the Reds and he's the Chosen One, don't forget that one.
You can tell how the story will progress, certain events turn to be devastating for our main character and that will unleash something inside him. He would want to change the world, he would want to take revenge for those who have done him wrong. And yes, he rises to power and becomes a God. Voila! The end.
Red Rising tries to tell a strong message but it is lost when your main character is apparently a God aka the Chosen One. Darrow is fucking perfect. He has no flaws, I mean, come on, he thinks he's the best Helldiver, he thinks he can change the world and the worst part is, he never fails and is saved by our annoying friend, deus ex machina!
I didn't like Darrow. I wanted to. But I couldn't. He was just too perfect for me. The rest of the characters didn't stand out either. They seemed like background noise and I didn't like them either. The story started off really well but it got boring real soon. It was like walking in muck, it just goes on and on and on. And I was waiting for that one glorious moment that would change my opinion about this book. AND IT NEVER CAME!
However, I did like the take on the mythologies and the concept. It was a bit Hunger Game-ish because many times, I felt certain similarities, just tiny ones. I just wished it was executed without a perfect character. I just wish Darrow wasn't the Chosen One.

What's on the menu: Fun is on the menu with a few sprinkles of darkness!
Seconds was a really good graphic novel. The artwork was fantastic and I loved the colours! The characters are portrayed like cute chibi characters which might generally make one think this is meant for a younger audience but worry not for this novel is meant for all ages and the characters are older than how they look!
Katie wants to open a new restaurant but things aren't going so great for her. She's making a lot of mistakes, hurting a lot of people and she just wishes she could go back and change her mistakes. And how lucky she feels when she finds a house spirit in her house! All she has to do is write down her mistake in a particular notepad, eat a mushroom and BAM! Whatever she wished had happened instead would replace her mistake.
But like ever typical person with something magical, Katie gets addicted to this routine of writing down her mistakes and eating mushrooms and BAM! Her mistakes gets corrected.
And she has no clue how her past gets corrected or what exactly happens. It just gets corrected the way she might have wanted.
She wants her old boyfriend back - BAM! - He's back.
And like that, she keeps eating mushrooms and keeps correcting her mistakes which angers the house spirit (too much of anything is good for nothing) and also without Katie's knowledge something dark and gritty is being created because of her adventures with magical mushrooms.
So, basically what this story is trying to tell is you can't change whatever that has happened and you need to move on and not make similar mistakes. This graphic novel was just fun but nothing more. I wasn't emotionally connected to the characters or the story. I mostly kept reading this because of its artwork which again, is absolutely fantastic!
If you're looking for something quick and fun and engaging, you should pick this one up! And do choose the hardcover edition because it is extremely gorgeous!

Injustice: Gods Among Us was incredible. I'm completely smitten. It left me speechless with my emotions warring inside me. You don't understand how much I love this graphic novel. I could just live off it. It's like my personal brand of oxygen. Everything I've ever wanted in a graphic novel, every character I've ever wanted, all of them in ONE BOOK. I can feel my heart elating right now.
This book is based on a video game, a prequel to it. I haven't played the game yet but I'm pretty sure that one day I will be destroying my eyeballs playing it! If the prequel was so damn good, I wonder how awesome the game would be. And it is not at all necessary for you to know about the game before you read this. Just go buy it already!
As you can clearly see by the cover, this book is a delicious spin on a Justice League story and obviously that means it contains the coolest and most kickass characters ever!
[image] [image] [image] [image]
Impressed yet? I bet you are.
So, now you're interested to know what the whole story is about or at least, a few snippets about it before actually committing yourself to buy this epic graphic novel. I would love to tell you the juicy details and the spoil the shit out of you but I'm going to restrain myself. You know how hard that is when you're so crazy about something and you just want to go screaming 'You know this happened and then, that happened and then I just died!'
But me is a good girl and here's a non- spoiler-ish gist of the story line for you!
"Yesterday we lost the city of tomorrow."
You know how they say that even the most honest of men can get corrupted? Something like that happens here. Some terrible, terrible things happen and leaves terrible after effects. There are a group of people who believe in one thing and another group who believe in something else. And now you're stuck in the middle trying to understand who is right and who is wrong or whether all of them are wrong or whether all of them are right in some way.
This book questions a lot of things we believe and take for granted and it is actually very deep. I guess that's also one of the main reasons why I love it so much. It shows you how much power can corrupt you, how much it can change others around you and how much it will make you believe that you're right in some way.
I also have to warn you that some of the characters in this book may not be like how they are portrayed in other comics, movies and tv-shows. This book just expands all of these famous characters past all their barriers. It portrays them on a new level. I thoroughly enjoyed each and every single character and I loved how they were portrayed here.
The artwork was fantastic and very eye-catching. The dialogues were witty, funny and also sometimes, emotionally draining. The story line will always keep you hooked and you will always be like 'What is going to happen?!'
I also very much enjoyed the banter between Harley Quinn and Arrow.
[image] [image] [image]
I kind of miss these characters now. I'm currently just looking up random pictures of Arrow, Superman, Batman and Joker. I guess this is one of the after-effects of devouring this book all at once (even though I did take it a bit slow).
Let's make a check-list now:
Swoon-worthy cover ✓ Eye-catching graphics ✓ Fantastic characterizations ✓ Witty dialogues ✓ Brilliant story line ✓
Trust me, folks, that is all you need. This book will provide you pure, unadulterated entertainment. It will give you new insight on your favourite characters, it will make your heart go thudthudthudthudthudthudthud and in the end it will leave you reeling for more.
This book is recommended to every human being residing on planet Earth and if you're reading it on some other planet, yeah then for you too. The undead, the supernatural creatures, etcetera, if you guys are out there feel free to pick this epic, masterpiece of a graphic novel any time! ...more

I'm not a fan of horror and only when the planets align themselves properly and when the sun doesn't shine for three days do I ever pick up books from this genre.
Apparently there was a fault in the alignments because I didn't like or enjoy this book one bit. I didn't hate it either but lack of any emotions is just as bad.
The plot sounded quite promising. A girl lost in the creepy woods... what scary things might await her? NOTHING!
Unfortunately, I didn't find anything scary in this book. Nothing made me look under my bed during the cold dark nights. There were pretty gross scenes but that doesn't count as scary because they only made me want to vomit.
I also didn't like Trisha, our main character. She's only 9 years old and would have been quite interesting to read about but I just found her too boring and was also quickly losing interest. I guess, in other words, that this book was not meant for me.
This was also my first Stephen King's book and I'm pretty sure this won't be the last. I've heard great things about his other novels and will surely pick it up when you know, the planets and the sun do their job.

MY PRECIOUS! Where have you been all my life, my precious?
The Young Elites is a concoction of rich settings, dark flavours of fantasy, outstanding characterizations, smooth, honey-like writing style and a dash of sexiness. It stole my breath away from the very beginning. The best thing about this book (to be honest, there are a lot of great things about this book but I will narrow it down for you) is its characters.
Aren't you bored of reading the same old goody characters who fight for what is right and they're so good, kind and selfless that sometimes you find it hard to believe and relate to? Aren't you yearning for someone different? Don't you want to know the story of someone who is not kind and selfless and good?
Meet Adelina Amouteru, the best female lead character I've ever read about.
"I belong to no one. On this night, I swear to you that I will rise above everything you’ve ever taught me. I will become a force that this world has never known. I will come into such power that none will dare hurt me again."
It feels so good to keep reading those words. It feels so good that someone can accept their powers without having the sole motive of using it for good only. Oh, I tell you, it feels extremely good!
"It is pointless to believe what you see, if you only see what you believe."
The Summary
A disease has ravaged Adelina's nation and left victims called the malfettos. These malfettos have weird markings on their body which separates them from others who have come unscathed from the disease. And some of these malfettos possess inhuman powers, powers that the rest of the humans extremely fear and revere. They are called the Young Elites and none of them, including the malfettos who don't possess inhuman powers, are treated well.
When Adelina's evil and torturous father pushes her too far, she decides to leave her little sister Violetta and her father and abandon the place she once called home. She wants freedom, she yearns for someone to tell her she's a darling little girl and not torture her with cruel words and actions everyday of her life. But not everything turns out the way she had planned. Terrible things happen, things that changes Adelina's life forever.
Enzo is the leader of the Dagger society, a group of the Young Elites and rightful heir to the throne. He will do anything to get the throne. And like all stories have someone opposing the rightful heir, Teren will do anything to make sure that the queen rules the nation.
And now, I shall stop here with the summary and let your desirous heart get curiouser and curiouser until you can no longer bear it and grab a copy of this book.
The Characters
Let me tell you more about my favourite character of all time.
"I know who you really are. Who will ever want you, Adelina? My fury heightens. Everyone. They will cower at my feet, and I will make them bleed."
Adelina is a badass fire-cracker. I mean, come one, don't you love those wonderful words she said? She's just perfect. According to me, perfection is a quality that comprises one's flaws. Adelina is an extremely flawed and a unique character. She's not your typical young adult main character. She's like dark chocolate. She has dark desires and motives. Not everyone can love her sweet and bitter self.
The Young Elites were completely fascinating. I was so excited to discover each and everyone's powers and was also very curious to know their limitations. The characters in this book are unique and very intriguing. I just wanted to keep reading more and more about them. This whole book is completely fascinating!
I have to say that the description of these characters reminded me so much of anime/manga characters. I pictured them as anime with more sharp and refined features. How I love creating scenarios in my head!
Marie Lu has weaved an outstanding story with extraordinary characters, both of which I will never forget any time soon. I was hooked. I was addicted. I was smitten. I was hypnotized. I was obsessed. I went head-over-heels. I laughed. I cried. I gasped. Basically, I died in a pool of happiness.
This book was a thrilling roller-coaster ride in the dark, an epic unforgettable ride I will always relish! And I suggest you better get on this ride too or you're missing some very amazing things in life.

1. The writing style - It greatly annoyed me. Nothing special or unDnf at 60% because I don't really give a damn.
Some of the reasons why I dnf-ed it:
1. The writing style - It greatly annoyed me. Nothing special or unique with the narration but whenever the past was narrated, the main character was always referred as 'the girl'. It king of got on my nerves. Why you won't use her name, huh? I get it, she's a female! I don't understand why it was necessary she was called as 'the girl' when we all knew her name.
2. The Characters - Didn't find them interesting. Yes, I didn't find Camden appealing. (Sorry, folks!) They were outright boring.
3. The Story or lack of something interesting - Honestly, I didn't care for anybody or anything that happened in this story. I don't know if it's a 'it's me not you' situation but I really cannot find anything to say about this book other than fact that it was completely boring to me. ...more

No seriously, why am I always at a loss for words every time I need them most?!
*takes a deep breath*
When I was a little kid, I used to play these games where you need to create a character specializing in one of the mentioned powers. I remember being terrible at making trivial decisions (still am) and I remember asking everyone what I should choose. Trust me, nobody gave a damn. So, I decided this was a very serious issue and I needed to analyse each and every power before I make the final choice.
My last two choices (after eliminating the rest) were a Mage and a Swashbuckler. At that time, I honestly didn't know what 'Swashbuckler' meant and I only kept it because it sounded nice. Then, I googled it and I decided that's what I'm going to be. In virtual life and in real life. That was my dream career path. I also then decided that I would learn a bit of magic so that I'd surprise everyone when they were expecting only swords. (I'm brilliant like that, I know.)
It would have been nice if someone, at that point of my life, gave a little damn and told me 'Sweetie, that ain't a suitable career path any more.' Oh well.
Now, imagine me, after all these years, finding a book about swashbuckling and magic. Yes, I was speechless and a part of me thought this book was going to be a major let down. I mean, how can life grant you lemonades instead of lemons?
But, oh dear lord, this book got me hooked from page one. I wanted to devour it that instant but I decided to be wise and read it slowly, savouring every bit of it. This book was , hands down, the best book I've read this year. I'm pretty sure life won't give me another lemonade this year. (It's crazy like that, I know.)
The Summary
Consider yourself inhabiting the land of Tristia. You hear the King is dead and the Greatcoats (Travelling Magisters who bring justice) have done nothing to protect their King. You're mad at them, you're mad at everyone because you're scared. The Dukes are rising into power and that's not good, not good at all. They're, to put it plainly, bad and extremely corrupt. You wish someone would bring justice. You wish the Greatcoats were still around.
Falcio Val Mond, Kest and Brasti are the ones you're looking for, though you don't know who they are. Not yet. These three Greatcoats still feel it necessary to uphold the King's laws and bring justice to everyone but the only problem is, everyone mistrusts them. Some outright hate them. And of course, they are banned and it would be treason if you're seen with them and then, you'll be put to death by the Duke's men.
These are dark times, reader, dark times.
The King has left the Greatcoats a mission and these three are trying very hard to fulfil their King's last wish. I'm not going to tell you what it is, reader. I'm afraid the summary kind of abruptly ends here and it is absolutely necessary for you to pick this book up and read it. But I will tell you what you might expect:
Action Humour Epic adventures You feeling extremely happy
The Fantastic Characters
Falcio, Kest and Brasti are just awesome in epic proportions. Yes, they're flawed and that's what makes them so awesome. The story kind of alternates between the past and the present and you can see how much Falcio (the narrator) has changed and grown. So, there's a lot of character development too.
These three are extremely witty and funny and just amazing with their weapons. You'll love them, reader. You will and you must or you might have a sword stuck in your belly.
“I rolled my eyes at Kest. We'd heard this lecture many times before, but Trin hadn't, so she stepped right into it. "Is it really so hard?" She asked "My dear, not one man in a hundred can be a proper archer. And not one in ten thousand can become a master." "And you are one? A master archer, I mean?" Brasti smiled and contemplated the nails of his right hand. "One might fairly say so, I believe." "One says so frequently," I observed.”
This book made me laugh, shed tears, laugh again and have the best time reading it. I know this is going to be one hell of a book hangover because I still feel like I'm in Tristia. This book is going to blow your mind away and it's going to make your heart feel extremely happy and content. I wish I could use flary words to describe it better but to be honest, you will feel happy and content in the end. As simple as that.
I want more, please, Mr. De Castell give me more of this and I promise I will give you lame reviews that really don't do your books justice. Or, I shall be your faithful sidekick, pretending to help you, but really just reading everything you write and nodding appreciatively while on the inside I give this maniacal laugh and die in happiness.

WHAT THE BLOODY HELL IS THIS UTTER BULLSHIT?
This one's for you, book.
Avada Kedavra! [image] Die, book! Die, die, die!
This is a completely crappy novella. How does it have such high ratings? The main character, Andrew something is an utter jerk. He fucks women everyday and different women and he won't fuck the same woman twice. What the fuck?!
“One dinner. One night. No repeats.”
And after he does his job with the woman, this is how he treats her.
"I glance at my watch. "Are you spending the night in this room or do I need to give you cab money to get home?" "What?" "Was my question unclear?"
No, seriously, how are people falling for that guy? You do realize one day he might have herpes or aids, right?
Andrew is a whore. A manwhore. Don't tell me he's not. He's super rude to EVERY SINGLE PERSON ON PLANET EARTH. And, if you're a pretty female working in his damned office, sorry sweetheart, he will fuck you right after humiliating you. And the worst part is, NONE OF THE IDIOTIC FEMALES REFUSE HIM!
Do you like it when he publicly humiliates you?
Do you like it when he yells at you?
Do you like it when he's nothing but outright rude to you?
I bet if he wasn't gorgeous and rich, those women would probably have him arrested for staring at them for too long. I don't understand how looks can change everything and make people so blind. Even a blind person wouldn't be that blind!
I'm so pissed off right now. I think I might have blood pressure. God damn it, book!
