Didn't care what happened, but cut to the end to get it over with. The narrator failed to get my sympathy even though he was both old and dying as well as having been orphaned essentially twice. To paraphrase Oscar Wilde, to lose one parent might be a tragedy, but to lose your whole family to the Dust Bowl and your cousin to a hurricane smacks of carelessness. This might not be the author's fault. As usual it's probably just my head. There's enough stress in my life and tragedy in the world; I don't need to add to it for entertainment....more

I mean, you can just see where it's going. I hesitate to elaborate even though it's hardly spoilers as this is based on history. And that's part of the problem. The reader can see where it's going and the protagonist can't and it makes one want to scream. I leafed through after Randall appeared and went Yup, yup, that too. The writing was good, it was the inevitability that got to me. ...more

I was even living in NYC, down the street from The Dakota, in the mid-80s and danced at The Limelight ... once. I have interesting if not totally happy memories of the few years I was there. It didn't help. I almost bumped into Yoko Ono in the cosmetic dept. of Bloomingdales. Who is this tiny woman with this huge man (her bodyguard) and why is the area suddenly deserted? I only had to look at her face. It was a reflection of my own. I moved on quickly....more

I lost interest in the suggestions she culled from her website or twitterfeed or whatever. And I probably should read Aristotle. This book came at just the right time, as I was about to retire, but then COVID kicked in and I haven't felt much like doing anything. I have started a Virtues chart, but with only a handful of items on it to start. ...more

Not really read. Couldn't take the gore. Had some funny moments in it - clever bits - just, ick, couldn't take the gore. Not a zombie fan, full stop. Not really read. Couldn't take the gore. Had some funny moments in it - clever bits - just, ick, couldn't take the gore. Not a zombie fan, full stop. Zombies have been perverted from their origins. I mean, when when did they start eating people?! Making them cows did not de-whatsis the ick factor for me. There are only two contemporary zombie works that I have enjoyed: "Shaun of the Dead" and Pride and Prejudice and Zombies (where the Austen work was improved beyond all knowing by Elizabeth kicking Darcy into the fireplace - go Lizzie!). Oh, I forgot Fifty Shades of Brains which was a laugh-out-loud. So, that's why I gave this a chance. But it was too icky. Sorry....more

This is a personal journey - and while the author is a great beauty (holy moly!), I have no interest in her personal search. Will move on to the one about the color red. ...more
