I loved delving into the "working class" and that neither MC is a Lord nor a Lady. We have a super hot, half-Indian tailor turned dressmaker and an impoverished daughter of a country gentleman hoping to snag a husband of some fortune to save her family (classic) but to also pay for the upkeep of her horse (not as classic). Our gentlewoman turns to our Indian dressmaker to outfit her for the season, her knowing he is extremely talented (a magician with a needle really) and him wanting to get his business off the ground, theirs is a perfect partnership. But after they touch and sparks fly, these two end up secretly wanting more than a business arrangement. I read this in a single sitting, that's how much I enjoyed it, and I've already downloaded the second book in the series. This is my first by this author but most definitely not my last!...more

The cover caught my eye initially. I just love it. Fall is my favorite season, I have a tattoo of an umbrella on my arm, so it called to me. Weirdly enough, I'm currently rewatching This Way Up with my daughter because I love Aisling Bea and I'm totally picturing her character as Farley (even though Farley is redheaded and NOT Irish lol). There are a few other minor parallels between that show and this book-which probably only exist in my mind just FYI. I don't know if that added to my enjoyment of the story or not, but it certainly didn't hurt. While this is a friends-to-lover romance (which is not always my fave), there were never any strictly platonic feelings between the two which helped in my opinion. Sometimes the transition between friends to lovers can seem a little jarring, but since these two were never ever really "just" friends to begin with, I didn't feel that disconnect from one role to the other. The "fake" dating just gave them both an excuse to act on their very real feelings. Definitely recommend this for those looking for a sweet, slower burn. Plus, I'm now a sucker for the older guy/younger girl trope (as long as the younger girl is an adult, preferably 25+!) so that's just another plus on the list of plusses!...more

I loved the idea of sword-weilding librarians and magical tomes with personalities of their own. It was so easy for me to visualize these kind of amazing and awe-inspiring Great Libraries. Like, I could feel them and smell them. I am one who always enjoy a creepy, sentient wood, and in this case a sentient library proved to be an equally alluring backdrop. Honestly, this book met every expectation and then some. So much so that I'm thinking of picking up An Enchantment of Ravens now......more

This book is so vivid and whimsical. I literally can't stop looking at it.
I keep flipping through the pages, examining the illustrations, continuously catching something that I didn't the first time through. Each story, each caption is meant to arrest, to stimulate the mind, to make you see. They are really quite fascinating and compelling.
Not only that, but the book itself is beautiful. It is one that will proudly grace my shelves for years to come. Love it. ...more

I loved this.
As I sit here, I am trying to find the words to explain why I loved it, and I tell you, it's hard. Not because this book doesn't deserve my adoration, because it totally does, but because this book just felt a little like magic, and that is hard to capture with words.
Since this is considered a retelling, and most are already familiar with Jane Eyre, I'm not going to write a synopsis, although I will say this: it'd be fairer to say that the Jane of this book modeled her life around the other fictional Jane, versus it being a true retelling. Jane Eyre happens to be Jane Steele's favorite book so she mirrors a lot of her life through that lens.
Where this book truly shines is with its characters. I thought the author did a fantastic job of capturing their essence, of breathing life into each one so that we are presented with a being, whole and hale, though never truly clear because they each have their secrets. Oh yes, they do. But that's what makes them so fascinating, their secrets. Reading and experiencing the peeling back of layers so that we can know them better and, at the end, maybe, just maybe, understand who they are, was utterly captivating.
I've been feeling really jaded lately, thinking that books just aren't living up to their potential or that authors must think their audience is not clever enough to figure things their own so they end up practically spelling out the twists. I mean, literally the only way not to see it coming would be not to read the book. So, imagine my surprise when this author threw a little twist in to the mix that I totally did not see. Like not at all. I was caught totally unaware. I freaking love that. It restores my faith, really it does, so thank you!
This book was magnetic and charming, it was quick witted and moving.
In a word, it was exceptional.
We tell stories to strangers to ingratiate ourselves, stories to lovers to better adhere us skin to skin, stories in our heads to banish the demons. When we tell the truth we are often callous; when we tell lies, often we are kind. Through it all, we tell stories......more

There was not a single main character that I empathized with. Freda was the worst. Super judgemental under the guise of being an open, understanding person. I don't always pick up on slut shaming in books, but it is so prevalent in this one. It was pretty gross and very petty. And Nicholas. The man has no concept of boundaries or personal space. It made me more than a little uncomfortable for Freda to be honest, regardless of how I felt about her as a character. I don't know. I love stories of broken people who find healing through love and acceptance. That's what I was really hoping for here: complex characters working through complex situations. Instead, I got a handsy guy who really likes boobs and a bitchy, insecure girl who lifted herself up by putting others down. I kept hoping there'd be a turning point, but sadly it never came. It makes me sad because I was really intrigued by the concept and really wanted to love it....more

Whew, I feel better now. This book really does deserve more than 3 stars. ****************************************************************************** I'm not totally sure how to rate this book. I really enjoyed it until parts started to piss me off. If I could ignore those bits and just take in the rest I'd give it a 4....BUT the underlying theme of "humans=bad" (though for some reason all of the humans in the book were pretty decent people) greatly took away from the experience for me. It went from a potential favorite to one I nearly DNF'd without looking back. I need to think on this....more

So, yeah. Not just another Cinderella tale.
I mean, yes it was pretty predictable but it was also a pretty entertaining read . If you're like me and currently in a book slump/funk or you just need something a little fun and naughty to pick up then this may be worth checking out.

An eccentric paranormal investigator (that would be Jackaby) takes on a young assistant who is looking for an adventure (and employment) in a new country. They begin with the investigation into the death of a reporter and from there events escalate until it's a race against the clock to capture the killer. There's humor and mystery and just the hint of an impending romance all of which is naturally doused in the supernatural. It was just a quick, engaging (that word is so over-used, I know, but it's apt in this case), enjoyable read and I look forward to reading what else is in store for all of these guys....more
