Ultimately, I liked this one. Some things felt a little repetitive (ie, I'm so tired of pretending), and I was surprised when she was surprised by some of the revelations. I had no idea she was thinking what she was thinking when she was thinking it. Some of the conclusions she arrived at never even crossed my mind. Aside from that, I was interested in where things were going and are continuing to go. I really ended up liking the characters, despite feeling like Signa may not have been the brightest when it came to her detectiving. Book 2 is already on my holds list!...more

This series is one that just keeps giving. Each book has been an evolution of plot and character. Even though the mysteries aren't super hard to deduce, they still feel well done and well concluded. There aren't loose ends or questions left unanswere. The last book took us into Audrey's past, and now, this book takes us to Hugh's, which is even more scandalous and salacious. The author has opened up a few avenues of possibilities for a future for our Duchess and Bow Street Runner, we'll just have to see how she decides to proceed....more

She really has the worst luck. This time, it involves her past at the asylum. She and Hugh team up (once again against his better judgment) to solve the case. Philip is not as present in this book, which is honestly perfectly fine by me. He's not my favorite. His absence allows Hugh and Audrey to spend more time together. I think it is safe to say that by the end of this book, Audrey should have a pretty clear idea of where Hugh's intentions lay. Bless him. The author has been weaving in a solution to the predicament they've found themselves in. Not that I'm happy per se, but at least there's a small window that's been opened. We'll just have to see how it works itself out....more

We have yet another murder that Audrey has found herself ensnared in. This time, it's a friend whose body is found at her husband's country estate. She brings Hugh in because, obviously, she needs him. Cassie, Philip's younger sister, is also along for the ride. I liked it. There's enough mystery to keep it interesting and enough tension to keep me invested.
I'm not sure how this whole marriage to Philip will resolve itself, though. I mean, obviously, at some point, Audrey and Hugh will have to have their moment, but it's still early days in this book. Hugh is definitely the more obvious with his regard, but Audrey is getting there. This is why I'm reading this series. I hope it pays off! Lol....more
I'm not always into the single parent trope or even the "my fake fiancé" shtick these days, but something about this one just hit right, ya know? And I'm not always into the single parent trope or even the "my fake fiancé" shtick these days, but something about this one just hit right, ya know? And it felt like a different kind of HR. Not just the wallflower who ends up reforming the rake (as per my usual). This is a newly single mother of two children trying to keep her family together in the way that she's allowed in a world where women do NOT have the same rights as men. Period. Plus, I just really liked Cora and Nathaniel together. They each had their hangups, but I really liked that they actively tried to work through them. Together. Like a team. As they should. Plus, the kids were actually essential to the plot, which weirdly enough, is not always the case with these single parent books. Anyhoo. I'm definitely happy I finally got around to reading this one. It was a welcome change and a nice little dive back into HR ❤️...more

Two working class people from very different backgrounds, our prim and proper Minerva and our hulking brute Nye, are essentially forced into a marriage arrangement. Honestly, this kind of MMC is usually a favorite. It's always the big ones who fall the hardest. Anyway. These two really don't know what to make of one another, but end up trying their best to make things work (though Nye manages to bungle it a few times with his lack of "wife managment skills".) I don't know, I ended up enjoying the way they each interact with one another, Nye with his brashness and Minerva with her prudishness. It's really kind of their thing. He pushes and she acts shocked. I would have loved to have been in his head at times just to see where his mind was, but this is told from Minerva's POV. Overall, aside from Nye sometimes pushing it a little much, I really enjoyed it....more
