I loved the Christmas Sisters last year, so I was excited to read this one for my #MeetMeToRead buddy read this month. I may have let some of the hype get to me, expecting a 5 star read, but it was still cute overall....more

I was due for a literary fiction novel and Sugar Run gave me just what I was looking for. Jodi and Miranda wind up on a road trip of sorts, as they make their way to Jodi’s grandmothers home in West Virginia. Maren gives readers a wonderful character study with Jodi, as we see a woman with so much grit and realness, yearning for a better life. Written in such lovely prose and dealing with the dynamics of poverty, drug abuse, incarceration, and government hardships. This story will stay with me a long time. ...more
The Cliff House by RaeAnne Thayne was a beautiful story of three different women. Sisters Beatriz and Daisy, and their Aunt Stella, who is more like a young Mother to them after losing their own troubled Mom to a drug addiction many years before.
This was my first book by RaeAnne Thayne but I will be back for more! I loved how she told the three stories of these women and how their struggles and heartaches wove together so beautifully. I felt for each of these women as they experienced love and were held back by their different fears. The Cliff House was both a place of love and refuge to this family and I loved seeing their story unfold.
Living in Cape Sanctuary, the sisters never knew all the dreams that their Aunt Stella had sacrificed to ensure they had everything they’d ever need. Now as grown women themselves, it’s time for Stella to reveal the secret she’s been hiding that will change their family forever. ...more

We carry our families within us the way we carry our breath underwater, keeping us afloat, keeping us alive. I’ve been lifting anchors since I was eighteen. I’ve been holding my breath since before I was born.”
-Erika Swyler, The Book of Speculation
For the most part, I really enjoy reading literary fiction. I like the whimsical aspects and losing myself in the writing. I know not to think too deeply because it’s really more about the beautiful writing and atmospheric storyline anyways.
The Book of Speculation handles two bisecting storylines, one of Simon, a young librarian, who makes it his duty to look after his younger sister Enola, after losing both of his parents. As a mysterious book arrives at Simon’s door, he is swept away searching for answers to the death of his own mother, as well as the prior deaths of many generations of underwater “mermaid” from the 1700s to present day. He wants to find out if there is truly a family curse, and if so, he must do everything he can to save his sister from drowning.
The other storyline that takes place, is one involving a “wild boy” from the 1700s who becomes part of a traveling Circus Act, complete with tarot card reading, a strong man, and mermaids.
I was reading this and actually thinking “what is going on” quite a few times, but I also enjoyed the magical realism peppered throughout this novel....more

Into the Jungle I was introduced to Erica Ferencik’s writing when I read The River at Night and loved it, so I was excited to read her newest release!
Into the Jungle was such an atmospheric ride literally through the Bolivian jungle, and once again I was entranced by Ferencik’s knack for storytelling. While I initially thought it would be all suspense and thrills, it also included a sort of coming of age story, as Lily has to learn to survive in the wilderness. Anacondas, tarantulas, ferocious man eating jaguars?? No thank you!
It was a fast read and made me realize what a wimp I am! I used to love watching Naked and Afraid and imagining what it would be like to be a survivalist. This book definitely gives you a glimpse of what that might be like, but from the comforts of your own home. . ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️/5 stars!

Owen has been accused of this sexual assault to Mara’s best friend Hannah at a party one night.
This was my first book by Ashley Herring Blake, and she writes with such power and hope for all the girls that need to be HEARD. Mara is torn with her own violation, and discovering how to process what to believe. Her best friend or her own blood and twin brother.
Ashley Herring Blake takes such a hard hitting topic as rape and sexual orientation in today’s culture and brings about such a strong empowerment to readers. All the praise! ...more

“On earth, Sky Mother created humans, her children of blood and bone. In the heavens she gave birth to the gods and goddesses. Each would come to embody a different fragment of her soul.”
What a ride! Children of Blood and Bone was nothing like I’ve read before, which is why I gave it 4 stars. I don’t know that it lived up to so.much.hype.. but that’s the problem with books that reach that status I guess. There were parts I really enjoyed though overall, so I’m here for the next book!...more

You clever, clever, little book. 2019 is already shaping up to be a very good reading year for me! Reading books like I’ve never read before, which is a very wonderful thing.
I think the best way to go into reading The 7 1/2 (why can’t this title just be 7 to make it easier, ha) Deaths of Evelyn Hardcastle, is blindly. It brought me into a game of sorts, trying to discover the murder that would take place over and over each time Aiden Bishop wakes for the day. Another chance at solving the puzzle. I felt like this book was one part Downton Abbey, one part Clue, one part Groundhog Day, and one part “I have no idea what is even going on right now”, but it all comes together to solve this mystery in the end. I do still have some questions, but I’ll save this for another day. ...more
