A powerful middle-grade novel about the childhood activism of Betty Shabazz, Malcolm X’s wife, written by their daughter.
‘Betty Before X’ takes place in the 40s and follows Betty Shabazz through her childhood and adolescence. Betty is the wife of Malcolm X, but in this book, she’s just a young girl dealing with family issues and starting into activism. Betty’s story is important and powerful. I love that her daughter wrote and narrated it. I recommend this one for all middle-grade readers (and adults :))

Once again, we get so much angsty YA/NA goodness in an unputdownable Jillian Dodd read! This book takes off right where the last one left off and after finishing, I'm more conflicted than ever.
Arrington is such a fun character. A great mix of both of her parents, but herself. She's still with Auggie, has a fun video with Beckham, and it seems like some progress is made/questions are answered with Branson. I'm not gonna lie, I'm still pulling for Beckham, but I loved seeing her romance develop with Auggie.
Not only to we have Arrington and the guys, we also have a big cast of other characters and their story lines. Including Arrington's brother's and housemates. I'm looking forward to watching their stories progress.
Dodd writes some of the most addictive books. This series is different than the KC books, but have that addictive quality. I love the drama and fun and I'm so excited to see where the journey takes us next! ...more

Catching the Sun is one of those books that gave me all the feels. I love Jennifer Hartmann’s writing and this was heartbreaking at times, but the end left me so happy and hopeful.
Max and Ella met when they were children and they became best friends. They were separated when Ella moved away and didn’t see each other again until their teens. Ella’s life is a mess and Max’s isn’t easy either.
I don’t want to go too far into the plot because I liked not knowing what had happened or what was happening. It kept me on the edge of my seat and intrigued all the way through. I have some thoughts and theories (specifically about Ella’s brother).
This book was emotional, intriguing, and romantic. The love story was so beautiful. I love a devoted hero so much, and Max was perfection. Catching the Sun is a mature YA novel that you don’t want to miss out on!
”Romanticize your life. Don't live every day like it's your last. Live every day like it's your first. Lasts are tragic. Firsts are exciting and full of celebration.”

All That’s Left to Say is one of those books that keeps you guessing and thinking. It was sad and a bit suspenseful. Had the tiniest bit of romance in it, but overall was a YA book about a grieving girl who lost her best friend/cousin and is trying to find out who could have been involved with her death. The time jumps were a bit confusing, at least in audio format and I had a hard time remembering all the characters involved and who was who, but aside from that I enjoyed it. Emery Lord’s writing is fantastic as always.

‘A Thousand Boy Kisses’ was one of those books that ruined me. I loved it, but it broke my heart. When I saw its sequel was out I knew I had to read it. A Thousand Broken Pieces was great. It was emotional and heavy at times, but it left me with an overall hopeful feeling, which I appreciated.
Savannah’s older sister Poppy has been gone for three years. She’s now the same age as Poppy was when she passed. Seventeen. She’s still not coping. Savannah’s parents send her on a trip with a therapy group. It’s specifically for grieving teens. That’s where Savannah meets Cael.
Cael Woods isn’t just grieving; he’s angry. He lost his brother in a terrible way, and things aren’t good for him. His parents send him to the same program as Savannah. These two meet and work on healing together. I loved seeing them open up to one another and start the work. Loss is a hard topic, but knowing someone can relate helps.
A Thousand Broken Pieces was a beautiful YA romance that had heartbreaking moments but ended on a heartfelt note. I enjoyed it very much!

I love Jandy Nelson and it’s been so long since she released a new book. I was ecstatic to read When the World Tips Over. I’m not going to lie, this had such a slooooow start for me. It took me two full weeks to read and I usually can read several books in that amount of time. Once I got into it, past the halfway point, I did enjoy it, but I can’t fully get over that slow start. I like the three fall siblings, but where the story really shined was getting Cassidy’s pov as well as her stories. That was my favorite part of the book. I loved how the end came together and even though the ending was a little more abrupt than I would hope, I enjoyed the conclusion.

I loved the first book in this series (From the Desk of Zoe Washington) so I was excited to see a new book out. Zoe Washington is a fantastic character and is just as determined and full of grit as always. I loved watching her follow her dreams, deal with friend issues, and navigate family time between her parents and her birth father, Marcus. Overall this was a fantastic read.

“Sometimes I don’t feel strong enough for this world.” “Neither do I,” I say. “But we can be soft together.”
A Quiet Kind of Thunder is a sweet YA romance between a selective mostly mute heroine, Steffi, and a deaf hero, Rhys. I loved watching their friendship turn into more. Seeing how they communicated with one another, the challenges they faced, and how they brought out the best in each other.

I enjoy Kasie West’s writing and it’s been a while since I’ve read one of her books so I was excited to get to ‘The Distance Between Us’. I liked this one well enough, but my goodness I feel like it ended so abruptly. We didn’t get closure on anything (view spoiler)[ Caymen’s dad, the grandparent situation, doll store, romance between her and Xander, her mom owing money to someone… plus her mom’s illness. It was all left kind of hanging IMO (hide spoiler)]

Anything goes night. This could be a good thing, a hot mess, but most likely a bit of both. I love Arrington and being in her head. Augie is great, as well as Johnny but Beckham. I think he's my favorite boy but I don't know that he'll be 'the one' at the end. But that's the fun... reading and finding out!
I love YA/NA books with all the feels and drama and Jillian Dodd does these books so well! I've enjoyed them so much and I hope the next book comes out soon. I can't wait to read more!
