Still, it succeeds in a lot of ways: offering a realistic and complex look at the lives of people affected by 9/11, doing the same for families struggling with very ill children, and providing a vicariously splendid revenge scene. My only wish is that Francine Prose could have allowed herself a bit more leeway for a messier wrap-up....more
Maybe I'm not tuned-in enough to preteen reading levels, but I found Gilda Joyce and the Ladies of the Lake to be predictable and not very scary. Granted, I'm a horror movie junkie (and at least ten years older than this book's target audience), but I feel like a twelve-year-old Megan would have seen right through all the plot machinations. Plus, Jennifer Allison really pulls her punches. She could keep the suspense going in several different places for much longer than she actually does.
Overall, it's something to read on a Saturday, but I wouldn't waste a recommendation on it....more
