Живут лишь для зависти друг к другу, для плотоугодия и чванства. Иметь обеды, выезды, экипажи, чины и рабов-прислужников считается уже такою необходимостью, для которой жертвуют даже жизнью, честью и человеколюбием, чтоб утолить эту необходимость, и даже убивают себя, если не могут утолить ее. У тех, которые не богаты, то же самое видим, а у бедных неутоление потребностей, зависть пока заглушаются пьянством. Но вскоре вместо вина упьются и кровью, к тому их ведут. Спрашиваю я вас: Свободен ли такой человек?”

Повсеместно ныне ум человеческий начинает насмешливо не понимать, что истинное обеспечение лица состоит не в личном уединенном его усилии, а в людской общей целостности. Но непременно будет так, что придет срок и сему страшному уединению, и поймут все разом, как неестественно отделились один от другого. Таково уже будет веяние времени, и удивятся тому, что так долго сидели во тьме, а света не видели. Тогда и явится знамение сына человеческого на небеси... Но до тех пор надо все-таки знамя беречь и нет-нет, а хоть единично должен человек вдруг пример показать и вывести душу из уединения на подвиг братолюбивого общения, хотя бы даже и в чине юродивого. bewildered. It's true he would come to himself immediately; but
if he were asked what he had been thinking about, he would
remember nothing. Yet probably he has, hidden within himself,
the impression which had dominated him during the period of
contemplation. Those impressions are dear to him and no doubt
he hoards them imperceptibly, and even unconsciously. How
and why, of course, he does not know either. He may suddenly,
after hoarding impressions for many years, abandon everything
and go off to Jerusalem on a pilgrimage for his soul's salvation,
or perhaps he will suddenly set fire to his native village, and
perhaps do both. There are a good many “contemplatives” among
the peasantry. Well, Smerdyakov was probably one of them, and
he probably was greedily hoarding up his impressions, hardly
knowing why.”
