Like I Never Said

Rate this book
A lot can happen on a two-week trip to the Canadian wilderness.

Auden Harmon learns her parents’ marriage is officially over. Expected. Accidentally gifts a five-hundred-dollar pen to a stranger. Unexpected.

Neither event wreaks havoc on her life quite like meeting Elliot Reid does. He has eyes the color of the cloudy sky. A slapshot the whole country has an unhealthy obsession with. The uncanny ability to say the exact right thing, right when she needs to hear it.

They stay in touch after she leaves. Swap secrets. Become best friends. Tell each other everything.

Well…almost everything.

It’s a thin line between love and hate. The line between love and friendship with a guy who makes mammoth-sized butterflies swarm your stomach? Practically transparent.

But when he’s made it clear friendship is all he has to offer?

You can never say it.

two books in a row where i haven't had the best reading experience. :( bestfriends-to-lovers is unfortunately a very rare trope (particularly best friends that meet when they're teens) and i was looking forward to how it would be pulled off here... not good at all, basically. we didn't get insight into how they spent their time together between the summers and their inner monologue around each other immediately revolved around not wanting the other one to know their true romantic feelings. it all just felt superficial, the portrayal of our characters and the relationship itself. and what was the epilogue??? overall, just so disappointing. i can't believe i'm giving a book one star for the first time. :(

—𝟐 𝐬𝐭𝐚𝐫𝐬 ★ ★ ☆ ☆ ☆

✿.。.:* ☆:**:. 𝐋𝐢𝐤𝐞 𝐈 𝐍𝐞𝐯𝐞𝐫 𝐒𝐚𝐢𝐝.:*☆*.:。.✿

It is divided into four sections; the first, second, and third summer followed by Auden and Elliot at college.

𝐀𝐮𝐝𝐞𝐧 𝐇𝐚𝐫𝐦𝐨𝐧 (h) is shipped off to her aunt’s house in Canmore, Canada because her parents are getting divorced and as highly accomplished people, they don’t want it to get out. As she’s in a coffee shop, she has yet to encounter a resident under the age of thirty, that is until she encounters Josh, Oliver and Lucas. Enter, the “leader of the group” and hockey star, 𝐄𝐥𝐥𝐢𝐨𝐭 𝐑𝐞𝐢𝐝 (H) gets one look at her and finds her intriguing. They eventually connect because she’s the one person who doesn’t expect anything from him, and both of them can freely share information about themselves because they have a consensus that they won’t tell anyone. The two become best friends that summer, but they have a hint of feelings. Nothing is initiated until the second summer when he suggests that they fake date so other girls won’t approach him anymore. All that does is amplify their feelings for one another and by the third summer, it complicates things when he is still prioritizing hockey. As its time for college, they separate for a while, since she needs time to deal with her feelings, especially because she knows not to expect anything from him. However, things change when she decides to let him in and fight for him so they obviously become official by the end.

*•.¸♡ ★·.·´ 𝑹𝒐𝒎𝒂𝒏𝒄𝒆 ★·.·´¯`·.·★ ♡¸.•*

The romance was believable but it felt more like a summer fling than a “marriage and kids” relationship, though that’s what happened in the epilogue so I’m wrong. Based on that, they’ve been dating for four years and she’s pregnant and he was going to propose (we didn’t see it happen).

Nothing remotely interesting happened every summer, it was just them denying they had feelings for each other but fake dating and doing all the couple stuff. He was still more interested in hockey, but I don’t blame him. At times, I felt like she was pressuring him to pick her over the sport but she knew his intentions the entire time. It felt wrong for her to use his dad issues to attack him and make him feel bad about not wanting to prioritize her. As for him, it was shitty for him to think that -she- should put him first and follow him to Boston. It’s a good things that they went their separate ways in college and reconnected later on.

This boy was very jealous and made her off limits to everyone in the town. He didn’t want a girlfriend but he also didn’t want anyone else to be with her… okay. I’m glad she defended herself and said he didn’t own her. Of course, they had sex right after and I lowkey felt like she manipulated him. She was telling him that if he didn’t do it with her, she would find someone else and started naming his friends and teammates?? That’s weird.. idk I didn’t like that at all.

Maybe they should have broken up or remained platonic because they had a good support system going on before all the feelings.

𝐎𝐯𝐞𝐫𝐚𝐥𝐥, I didn’t care for the characters enough and at times I liked her more with his friend Josh because they actually understood each other and came from similar backgrounds (they would have made more sense). Second male lead 💞💖 though he didn’t have feelings for her, though he did try to get her number first.. anyways, that friendship was cute too

It's no secret C.W. Farnsworth is one of my favorite indie romance authors!! I love her writing stlye so much. Each book immediately draws me in and has me falling in love with the characters! So I was absolutely thrilled to receive an e-ARC of her new book, Like I Never Said, which releases today, and it did not disappoint! I loved it! I loved how the book takes place in 4 parts, the different summers Auden visits Canmore, and we get to follow how their relationship progresses. I really loved both main characters, who very clearly liked each other even if they couldn't admit it most of the time! So much denial, so much tension. This was such a fun, sweet study, and an absolutely wonderful friends to lovers romance!

give me a friends to lovers foreverrrrr!! loved loved loved Auden and Elliot’s story, their interactions from the very first start were adorable but at the same time filled with lots of tension and I was completely hooked. It’s pretty much insta love, but also has its slow burn? and both of them are so dramatic and stubborn not telling each other what they feel, and Elliot’s reason for not wanting to commit with Auden was so lame…but you know what?! It didn’t even bother me in the least like it prob would with any other book because I am pretty much obsessed with both of them. They’re perfect💐💖. The only thing I would have liked to is the ending to not be so rushed, but i still enjoyed it. And the epilogue was so cute.
Also the couch scene?!!!!!omggggggg🥵🆘

Yes fellow reader, you are not mistaken. I read this all in 1 day to avoid writing my chemistry IA. Was that a wise decision? No it was not.
Seeing that this book was in kindle unlimited should have already warned me enough about the contents of this book, but as I lack self respect, I chose to continue on this journey regardless. It was not a terrible book for a kindle unlimited, but definitely a cheap copy of every summer after. Here are my comments:
1. These characters don’t have any personality trait that is not related to daddy/mommy issues and their hobbies.
2. They make the parents have huge roles in these characters lives but never develop or delve into these relations (Eli never went to the stepparent’s thing and then no one cared?? HELLO)
3. Literally no consent before spicy scenes. I mean wtf.
4. The characters hype each other too much in the beginning. YALL DONT EVEN KNOW EACH OTHER.
5. Josh is the best character
6. Annabelle is basically useless
7. Why tf is Elliot popular?
8. Elliot not having a reaction to her being pregnant in the end made me laugh SO HARD

This was a sweet (and sometimes frustrating) friends to lovers romance. Elliot and Auden meet when they’re 16, so this starts as YA, but the book spans several years, so I would categorize it more as a new adult romance.

The book is broken down into 3 consecutive summers and then college. I usually love this kind of build up, but I felt like the transitions between sections was really jarring. We never get to see them interacting except for during the short summer trips (and even that was somewhat lacking), so it was a little hard to believe in their connection.

I think my biggest issue with the book was that Auden would say she was fine with Elliot’s decisions/focus on hockey, and then be hurt that he wasn’t picking her. I found the scene on the couch cringey and awkward, especially because of the lack of consent. It always felt like Auden was coercing/convincing Elliot to take things further (even though we know from his POV chapters that he does actually want to). The book was fairly predictable (lots of lack of communication and back and forth), but the writing kept me intrigued and I definitely want to try some of the author’s other books in the future.

This book had so much potential but it kinda fell flat…

Like 53 pages in and 24 hours of knowing each other and they are like “I don’t know how I ever went without you” 🤮

And in one scene she sorta forced herself on him and that’s a massive no for me 🤢🚩

These two are actually extremely toxic together imo…

She shouldn’t have been like it’s me or hockey, and he shouldn’t have believed her. They should have realized there can be a healthy balance. Which they did, but like…. Idk I don’t believe they would work in the long run.

I also didn’t believe they really loved each other. I didn’t get enough of a development of their love. It happened too unbelievably fast.

I didn’t love it ngl 🤷🏻‍♀️

A Young Adult dating trope that doesn't offer much of anything new. Pretty much standard fare -- with likable lead characters and a bunch of hockey players and bitchy girls -- and, of course, family drama.

Certainly wasn't a bad read -- in fact fun to read but typical. Good pacing, characters that I really enjoyed getting to know and a timeline that covers three summers. Nicely done wrap as well.

C.W Farnsworth books are always such an easy, romantic read. I believe they’re aimed at a younger audience (YA) but they still have a small amount of spice, plenty of drama (but not too much!) and lots of romance

They’re a go-to read for me

Elliot’s determination to not date bc of hockey/his dad, regardless of how he felt for Auden, ticked me off. I also wish we got to see more of them between the summers, and between college and the epilogue. I’m rounding to four stars, but I really think it’s more like three and a half.

3.5 STARS | LIKE I NEVER SAID was good, but for some reason, I felt unconnected with the plot and romance. This is my second book I’ve read by C.W. Farnsworth, after reading FAMOUS LAST WORDS in January 2023. This is a friends-to-lovers romance between a hockey player and a California girl, as the story tells their forming relationship with each other for each summer they spend together. Would recommend if you love steamy romances, but this book didn’t hit the mark for me.

Wonderful concept, lacklustre execution. This honestly could’ve been a great story if it was fleshed out properly, but there was virtually no story/character building. This read like a proposal for a story, than an entire story itself. While the concept of each summer was novel, nothing worthwhile actually happens?? And man oh man oh man am I annoyed by the description of Canmore lolololol - are you really going to not ever even mention the Rockies??????

2.5/5

- Implausible timeline, behaviour, dialogue, and plot
- Author needs to get over her internalized misogyny; it was apparent in the book
- Lack of consent-seeking in one scene was disturbing and not even mentioned

Turns out I’m in love with any and all fictional men named Elliot. This book had it all for me. Friends to lovers, fake dating, childhood best friends, charming small town by the lake, and plenty of pining. My favorite part was that there was no huge major conflict between the two mc. Started and finished this book in one evening. Perfect for when you’re craving a lighthearted, refreshing read!

it was fine for the first thirty pages. but then you saw the lack of communication (yes i know they’re teens but it was annoying) and how she basically sa-ed him? possibly more than once? and then they don’t address it?

so yeah.

they have no communication skills and i wish i got to see more time in between the summers- like when they’re texting and stuff? so we would know just how close they were.

I was looking for a lighthearted cute little romance to read and the description sucked me in when it mentioned this was set in Canada (I have a big vacation coming up in 25 days to Canada that I've been planning for 8 years that takes place right around the same area this book is set!! Score!).

This is a cute story set over three summers and a college semester detailing a relationship bridging from strangers to best friends to something they can't help but admit is 'more'. They are only 16 when they first meet but are drawn to each other immediately. I loved reading the chapters of their friendship, but enjoyed reading about their 'more than friends' chapters just as much. I felt loads of feelings with this book and loved the writing style.

Favorite quotes:
"Is this what it’s like being friends with a guy? They just tell you things instead of forcing you to scour subtext?"

"He has feelings for you, and this fake dating bullshit is his way of dealing with it without dealing with it. Don’t let him get away with it.”

Wow! I really loved this book, and this author's writing style. I got so lost in it...

Auden is sent by her parents on a trip to the Canadian wilderness. She has a family there. Aunt's a workaholic and her cousin wants nothing to with her. She's spending her days at her own will and this is how she ends up meeting Elliot Reid. They become best friends.

The author did a fantastic job of making the buildup and the tension between Auden and Elliot insanely intense. They are fighting their feelings and their attraction for each other so badly for various reasons.
From page one I was hooked and I knew that this was going to be a great read. Auden and Elliot pulled at my heart strings and I couldn't help but to love them.

Like I Never Said was so touching, very sincere, and amazingly simple.

Auden and Elliot’s story is told over the course of three summer vacations spent together beginning when they’re 16 years old.
They quickly develop a friendship that is real and long lasting.
They keep in touch after the summer’s on a daily basis. I love that they are comfortable around each other and truly themselves.
One summer they take things to the sexual level.
The feelings have been smoldering from the beginning.
However, Elliot is adamant he won’t be like his deadbeat dad, he doesn’t think he can be a highly successful hockey player and be a devoted boyfriend. He doesn’t have romantic relationships.
Things get complicated and it affects their friendship. Both, have deep feelings and attraction to each other. They’re young and it’s very emotional and confusing for them.
Then, the story goes to the present when they’re both in college and things get emotionally messy again.

It’s a story of friendship with love and the struggle to overcome the deep seated fears that hold the characters back from fully giving themselves up to that love.
I like these characters, i liked that it’s a low drama story.
Nothing is over the top. It’s pretty mature for the age of the characters and I liked that.
It’s written with subtlety. The flow and the pace are very even. It never felt rushed or drawn out.
The epilogue was great, I loved that reassuring, emotional peek at their life a few years in the future.

I didn’t strongly connect to the characters, I liked them. I just didn’t feel that deep connection to them, although I was still rooting for them.
I think this is because so much of the angst and longing is off page.
I love this author’s previous books and style.
This one was good, it’s just missing a bit of the emotional connection I expected.
I’ll continue to look forward to the author’s books.

4.5! Best friends to lovers executed well! A plot I haven’t seen before with some hockey added in there! Loved the set up of the book (1st summer, 2nd summer, 3rd summer, college). Easy read, didn’t drag, definitely recommend!

More of a 3.5-3.75 ⭐️

I liked and didn’t like the way the timeline was laid out in this book. For a quick read, they covered several years which I would usually hate. Something about the way the author connected the dots and didn’t give too much fluff was nice though, and made the bit of character growth easy to see.

I do sometimes struggle with reading books where the characters are teenagers. Feels kinda funny to read about their love stories when they are 16-17-18, but young love is cute and I appreciate the skip ahead to show us their early 20s.

Cutesy little read.

4.5 ⭐️

Elliott is the elite high school hockey athlete that doesn’t do relationships but when Auden strolls into town while visiting her aunt, she doesn’t give two shits. Who knew this would be the start of a solid friendship? After that chance meeting, they met up again for two more summers before they head off to college. Between a fake dating ruse, a couch incident that sure as hell blur the lines of their friendship, and oh so much more, does Elliott have what it takes to finally be with the girl he loves or stick to hockey?

I definitely enjoyed this one! I love Farnsworth’s books. They’re so bingeworthy. This one was short but the bulk of the story was told in a 4-year time period so I got to see how they reconnected as they got older. It was more NA than YA even though the story started off when Elliott and Auden were 16. Their friendship, romantic development, sexual tension, and eventually losing their virginity to each other made me want nothing more than for them to have their HEA. The hockey aspect, competitiveness, the whole guy doesn’t do relationships thing totally wins me over every time, too.
