I'm sorry to say that this is the first book in the Prime Mating Agency series that I did not like. It was weird, even by these books' standards. Earth was populated by a bunch of copulating aliens? Melting ice caps has released a plague that caused humans to revert to some of these once-vestigial characteristics? WHAT?

Neera didn't really stand out to me as a heroine at all, and Echo felt like a blander mold of all the other heroes in this series. Usually there's something in each of these books that makes it feel special, but I'm sorry to say that that wasn't the case here, for me.

P.S. I'm still holding out for that I MARRIED A MINOTAUR book.

These books all follow a similar pattern. Much like Hallmark romance movies, but just dealing with interspecies and intergalactic arrangements. You get it. However, even with some repetitiveness, it's Regine Abel's writing abilities that truly steals the show. Her talent is off-the-charts, and I can't gush enough. It's crisp, vivid, the word choices and flow of each sentence are stellar, and she quickly brings you right into her characters and plots with ease. Now this particular entry into the PMA series wasn't necessarily the most exciting addition, but it was extremely creative, sexy, and told a very sweet, albeit unorthodox, love story. This was like a blend of Aquaman and The Little Mermaid, with a dash of Star Trek in there, too. So a very fun-filled adventure, with some very deep characters, and a lovely story of two individuals trying to appreciate their differences to make a new life together. I needed a palate cleanser after reading a very mean-spirited and truly terrible erotica last night, and I had to look no further than Regine Abel.

I’m a big fan of the series and it pains me to say it… but this took effort to finish. The actual writing is solid, it was just so boring. I Married a Merman has many similarities to the previous books, like the mutual respect from each mc and the low relationship drama... but where the other couples had other things going on (Olix-starving, Szaro-poachers, Daka-minotaurs) Echo and Neera had nothing, and we basically just followed them around learning about the planet. I’m a fan of worldbuilding, but I don’t need every detail in a 200+ fluff read. We had long discussions about minor details like talking with their scales but no definite storyline.

Bottom Line- I needed more plot and less ass kissing. I love that the H’s are besotted, but where I found Olix endearing for adorning his clothes and weapons with Susan’s virgin blood… I found Echo’s constant coddling of Neera off-putting.

Romance: 💙🤎🖤💜
Heat/Steam: 🔥🔥🔥
Story/Plot: 📕📗📙
World building: 🌏🌍🌎🌍
Character development: 😠😘🤓
Narrator(s): 🎙🎙🎙🎙
Narration Type: Solo Narration

The heroine: Neera - she has a debilitating disease after getting a fever. She has oxygen toxicity and feels that she is constantly suffocating. She also has to keep her apartment pressurized to strictly control oxygen levels and she must wear a mask at all times and she still may die. Before falling ill, she had wanted to become a marine biologist.

The Heroes: Echo - He has wanted a wife for a long time and is very exited when the Prime Mating Agency finally finds a match for him. He thought that it would be much harder since most species can’t survive in the atmosphere of Triton.

The Story: Neera finds out that the fever she had was turning humans into another race of people called Sicarians, though Neera only halfway transformed so she still couldn’t survive in the Sicarian atmosphere, she found that the Prime Mating Agency could help her out with her illness and match her to a planet that suits her needs so that she should be able to be survive the rest of her illness.

Echo is looking forward to meeting his match, though he does know that Neera was midway through mutating into a Sicarian. So if her stalled transformation moves forward once Neera is on Triton, then she might reach a place where the atmosphere of Triton is no longer safe for her at which time she would have to move to the Sicarian planet.

Like the rest of the books in this series, this story was told in dual points of view via solo narration. Narration was done by Daryl Mayfield who has a deep sonorous voice and also does a good woman’s voice. I have enjoyed his narration throughout this series. The world building in each of the books in this series has been terrific, most of them taking place on different worlds and in different types of communities. I have enjoyed each of them quite a bit.

I didn’t like this book quite as much as the rest of this series. It focused more on the differences in physiology between the two species, especially after Neera’s transformation started moving along. I found myself not caring how gills worked, or how their legs had membranes that stitched together into a tail when they get in the water. There wasn’t much of a side storyline in this one as in some of the other books.

3.5 stars - While I do think this is the weakest in the series so far, I still enjoyed this trip to a merman planet! I continue to love Regine Abel's imaginative world building and that her characters are always coming from a place of wanting to make their relationships work

I love this series!

However I had a couple hiccups with this one.

Neera is sick and no Earth doctors can figure out what's wrong. She goes to see an alien doctor and finds out she is a dorment Sikarian and is starting her mutation into that species, which is making Earth's atmosphere poison for her to breath. The only way she can be relocated to a planet with favorable conditions for her, since she doesn't have any money, is to find a mate on one through the Prime Mating Agency.

I loved Echo. This was my first merman book. Echo was sweet and sexy as hell! His main goal was to spoil Neera by pampering her and doing all the chores. Um...hell yeah, sign me up. He was sarcastic and funny which is always a plus. I loved Echo's caring and laid back attitude. He went out of his way to provide everything Neera needed to thrive and be happy. He was the perfect caretaker and mate.

Neera was open minded and willing to immerse herself in Thalan/Tritonian culture and dive head first into their way of doing things even when she was uncomfortable. For example strutting around basically butt naked. She was compassionate and caring, and could not have been happier to become what her mutation was gonna turn her into.

Echo and Neera were so good together. Often joking and laughing. I loved discovering all the amazing things Triton had to offer right along with Neera. They had steaming hot chemistry, even after a rocky start. Echo was so supportive and reassuring as Neera was changing and dealing with pain, fear, and uncertainty.

So one thing that I think took away from the romance was Neera's mutation. It was like someone with a chronic illness. There were so many instances where she was ill, and Echo was having to rush her to the doctor or stay up taking care of her for days on end. It seemed to make it more clinical, pushing the steamy times and more intimate moments to the wayside. It was sweet to see Echo taking care of Neera but it definitely bogged down everything. And everything revolved around Neera and her illness.

I still liked it. I still love this series. Echo and Neera were great characters and soulmates that I was glad found each other across the galaxies.

On a side note, I loved the illustrations at the end!!

TL;DR Synopsis:
♡ Alien Marriage of Convenience Romance
♡ Book 4 in a series, can be read as a standalone
♡ Cinnamon roll/Worshiping hero
♡ Caretaking
♡ MERMAN HERO!

I can’t tell you how excited I was when I saw this cover. I’ve been wondering what type of hero we’d get next and I couldn’t think of a better hero than a merman. I also really like how even though all of these books are marriage of convenience, all of the stories are different in how that plays out. It was interesting that it was because of the heroine’s health that she needed to go to his planet (and ultimately marry the hero).

**3.5/5 stars**

This story felt much slower than the previous ones. If it followed the same matchmaking type of premise with the empathic Temerns, it was very different from the other installments when it came to what the main couple had to overcome. In this one, dealing with an illness, adaptating to a new environment, change and indulgence were the main themes.

Any type of angst had to do with Neera, who had to adjust to the on-going mutation of her body, deal with the anxiety of an uncertain future, and sought her identity and sense of belonging. It was nice to see her evolve and learn how her changing body worked, as well as her new abilities which required a lot of time, practice and rewiring. She was very nice and sweet but also strong. It was very easy to sympathize with what she was going through.

“You are no longer human, but not yet Sikarian. That said, there are other planets that have the type of atmosphere where you would be able to thrive while we assess how your situation evolves.”-Dr.Atani

Thankfully, Neera had a very understanding and protective husband to take care of her. Echo was a very tender lover, always willing to go above and beyond to make sure Neera had and learned everything she needed to thrive in this new foreign world. He was patient, selfess and always had her best interest in mind (as it is the Thalan's way to cherish their female to no end). If at first he was worried about the matchmaking, he quickly connected with Neera on deeper levels once the uncertainties cleared out.

“May you forever be like water to each other,” Mother continued. “A home and a safe haven when the elements unleash their fury all around you. An infinite well to quench the thirst of your bodies and your souls, especially when your hearts feel dry. The current that will always push you forward whatever your endeavors and aspirations, and the still water that will keep you afloat and grant you the peace you crave when you simply need rest.”

Honestly, it was a beautiful and casual story, with a much slower pace than I was expecting. I loved the chemistry between Neera and Echo, and how they grew to love each other. Their steamy moments were well done and enjoyable, pretty hot too. They certainly were a perfect match.

My rating is a bit lower than the other books in this series because it took me a while to finish it. Not because it was bad or anything, but just because it was less exciting and MUCH slower. I don't think I was in the mood for that sort of story, that's all. Therefore, I'd say this one is my least favorite so far but by all means, I think it had its qualities. I really liked the aquatic fauna and flora, and the different interesting facts about underwater communication, echolocation and iridophore. The romance was sweet and heartwarming. And the Thalan's society was very caring and genuinely nice, peaceful.

This story really had a beauty to it and I would certainly not tell someone to skip it just because of my lower rating compared to the other books. I think one just has to be in the mood for a slower pace type of romance. I liked that the author tried something different, and I think it was a nice addition to this series nonetheless.

4.8 stars.
This one was a little different from the rest of the books in this series.
Neera is stuck in the process of transforming into the same species as her husband, and that is the reason she enters into the marriage pool to meet Echo.
Earth’s atmosphere is toxic to her and she can’t afford to move to a compatible planet on her own.
Thankfully, the prime mating agency pays all the moving fees when they find a match for candidates.

I was a little worried about these two forming the deep connection that the other couples do in this series, at the beginning. As were they honestly.
But after spending more time with each other and they have the time for their physical connection to blossom, everything else seems to click into place as well.
Not without hiccups along the way, of course, but they never faltered in the budding affection and care they feel towards each other after it forms.

Like with the other books, I was really fascinated with the new culture and species and setting that the Thalon introduce.
Reading about Neera trying to adapt to it all and find her place among them was engrossing and beautiful.
It was super sweet.
I also really loved all the different side characters and animals.
They were all so accepting and amusing and caring.

And then the sex between these two.
The Thalons definitely have alien anatomy and Echo knows exactly how to use it to best please his mate.
It was definitely steamy, but also passionate and sexy.

I just loved this book, and honestly this entire series.
Every time I finish the newest addition, I’m chomping at the bit to learn about the next species of alien and how the next mating will go.
So freaking good!

3 stars. This book had so much potential but it somehow got so mired down with boring details in the middle that I almost quit reading. I really enjoyed the way it started and the way that it ended. There really isn’t much of a conflict in this book, just a small issue with a simple solution that got blown out of proportion (for the sake of drama imo). There are also many day-to-day descriptions that could have been left out and the story wouldn’t have suffered for it.

Overall, I still really enjoy this series and hope the author will continue on with more “weird alien” stories.

Totally safe, no virgins from what I would guess… but no mentions of pasts for either of them, no cheating, no om/ow drama.
This entire review has been hidden because of spoilers.

I really enjoyed this installment in the series. Neera was dealing with some chronic illness and had her own brand of optimism and independence offset by loneliness and dejection. Echo was a sweetie pie who doted on Neera and helped her integrate into to an new world and adjust to the changes to her body. Their love story was precious and tender. I enjoyed the support that Neera got from Edlyn and, eventually, Leith.
This also might be my fave version of mermaid “shifting”.

Spice: 3/5

Triggers: chronic illness, drowning, suffocation, experimental medical treatments

This was an absolutely adorable book and I really enjoyed it. It’s definitely more on the sweet side and while the characters don’t have insta-love there’s definitely immediate attraction that their relationship builds on. Plus the characters are picked as chemical matches and perfect mates so all that’s left for them is getting to know one another and helping the heroine heal. Turns out leaving Earth is the only life saving option available to the heroine Neera, who’s recently learned the atmosphere is killing her because she’s not actually 100% human. Luckily both Neera and Echo are open to love and immediately click, making the terms of their marriage agreement easy to uphold. Neera has been alone and on her own since her teen years and all she’s longed for is to belong and to have people in her life who truly care, of course Echos family is perfect and accept her right away. This has an adorable epilogue and will certainly work as a standalone as none of the books are really connected. Aside from Neera’s emotions and the changes she goes through once on the planet the book is drama free and really lighthearted.

I read all the Prime Mating Agency books in 2 days and… no regrets. I Married a Merman wound up being my second fav, after the first book.

I really liked the backstory given to Neera, the heroine, who has been dealing with a mysterious illness on Earth. Doctors don’t know what’s wrong but basically the air/atmosphere is suffocating her.

She’s given an option “out” by the Prime Mating Agency: they will rehome her to a planet where she can live freely, but she needs to marry.

Enter, Echo. Basically, a pink and ginger merman.

I love how well thought out Regine’s heroes are, in terms of their species, their planets, their cultures. Each one is so distinct and while some are a little… strange… to our human selves, we get to experience them firsthand with the heroine.

There was great conflict and a super cheery ending though I feel I should give a blanket warning to all these books that they’re kind of breeder romances - you know, to further the alien species.

'What were you really supposed to say to someone you’d only met for the first time thirty minutes ago and gotten married to within five minutes of that first meeting?'

description

While this was a little better than the previous installment for me . . . there was also literally no plot. Not saying that the character development (literally in some physical ways) was fun to read & the romance and culture differences were still the best part of this series. But I would have really liked more of a specific plot?? Here's still hoping I get that in a maybe I Married A Minotaur book as the next installment???

4.5⭐️ for this gem

The Earths atmosphere is slowly killing Neera. Turns out she’s not who she though she was. The solution is to relocate but with it being so expensive her only option is to visit the Prime Mating Agency and hope they have a match for her. Echo is over the moon at the news of having a match. He doesn’t care what the future holds, as long as she’s in it.

I LOVED how different this was to the other books in the series. Neera and Echo deal with so much in such a little time. I love how caring he is of her and is constantly making sure she is happy.

The ending is so sweet. 😍

I feel like this book was an excuse for Abel to write about this cool idea she had about the water-based alien planet of Triton. To me, it read more like a story about Triton than a romance.

I appreciate how creative Abel was about crafting what life was like on Triton and thinking about how Neera could adapt to this new world. She describes everything - how people on Triton dress, what they eat, wedding customs, mermaid anatomy, alien animal anatomy, and more. It seems like Abel spent a lot of time thinking about these different elements, and they did help immerse me into Triton.

This is the first alien romance I've read with a protagonist of colour which was very cool! Neera is of partial Indian descent and she sometimes refers to South Indian customs.

At the same time, I felt that this description took a lot of focus away from the actual romance itself. As a result, the romance didn't feel all that romantic, even though there were plenty of scenes (steamy and non-steamy) that had a lot of romance potential. The plot is mostly "Neera getting used to life on Triton" and the scenes largely show Neera and Echo doing just that. It didn't help that Echo and Neera's POVs sounded quite similar to me.

I love romances that have great world-building but I feel that the romance should fit into the world that's being built. In this case, it felt like the romance was an excuse for the author to explore the world. This wasn't my cup of tea but maybe it'll be yours?

This was a unique take on an arranged marriage trope! I think this one has been one of the biggest surprises, because she was drowning on her own planet, so she had to move to this new planet where Echo lives, because she would die otherwise. The problem is that she can't afford to. Through the PMA, she would be relocated free of charge, and she would be helping Echo's people!
It's truly fantastic, and I loved the independence she gained through her marriage to Echo! Please read it!

Neera needs to get off Earth before it kills her. The oxygen content is too high and her body can't handle it. She can't afford to move off world, but if she accepts a match through the Prime Mating Agency, they'll cover her travel expenses and set her up on a habitable planet. All she has to do it take a merman as a mate.
Echo's kind have trouble conceiving, and their males outnumber females by a huge majority, so he's not going to let a potential match change her mind.
So they're both in this for the long haul from the get go, they just need to convince the other the fact.
There's a lot of worldbuilding with physiology and adaptations specific to their respective species that were super cool and I would have never considered. Lots of awkwardness thrown in there too, which I love.
I have enjoyed the wider world stories more so than the couple focused ones in this series, but this was such a fascinating world and concept that I couldn't help but be drawn in.

This was a good slow burn story with some very sweet scenes between the MCs.

I would have preferred to read less of the daily happenings on their planet. But there isn't much external drama taking place in the story to draw the reader's attention. We did get to see the beautiful connection that Echo and Neera shared because of this slow burn build. The world building is quite extensive too.

I Married a Merman was a good low angst story with a very sweet, protective hero, a curious, strong heroine and a wonderful found family.

The males in these books are seriously amazing!! They put these women so far up on a pedestal I die for them!

Echo wants so bad to find his match and be able to love and cherish his female😍☺️

Neera is just trying to survive. She has begun a change and the only way for her is to trust the Prime Mating Agency can find a match on a planet she can breath on.

The chemistry is 🤌🏼

He has a vibrating nub on his pelvis!! Human men are trash!

NEERA in the beginning does have a Chronic illness. I love the fact that was a huge part of their relationship and wasn’t glossed over. Echo gives his everything to take care of Neera and doesn’t shy away from any part of it.

I loved everything about this story and the characters - the main characters and the support characers. If you have read other books in the series, this one will feel very different, but more relatable. Rather than an external threat the main characters had to overcome, it was an internal one, specifically Neera's health and Echo's acceptance and support of her.

This book spoke to me on several levels. As someone with a rare, chronic condition I connected with Neera, her struggles and her need to be able to make her own choices. I also thought Regine Abel did a great job with Echo (through a conversation with Raen) coming to terms and accepting the fact that he had to show his love and support by supporting Neera's decisions and not what he thought was best or just trying to take the burden on himself. Not going to lie, I got teary. It's hard being in a relationship and working through major health issues and scares and this reminded me of some of my own experiences.

Another thing that really resonated with me was the marriage blessing on Triton:

“May you forever be like water to each other...A home and a safe haven when the elements unleash their fury all around you. An infinite well to quench the thirst of your bodies and your souls, especially when your hearts feel dry. The current that will always push you forward whatever your endeavors and aspirations, and the still water that will keep you afloat and grant you the peace you crave when you simply need rest.”

I have been with my husband for 19 years, and we got together at 19, so for half on our lives we've been together. Again, I got teary thinking of all the challenges, successes, joys, and pains that we've experienced over the years and how in each case, we did it together and supported one another.

This book may not resonate with everyone, and, on its surface it is lighter and sweeter than the previous books, but underneath is a strong message of bravery, acceptance, and love.

Meh.

This was adorable 🥰 Is it too much to ask that this series continue 4ever?
The plot is focused heavily on the two MCs and has the arranged marriage trope. There is some world building but it's supportive to the MCs' relationship and the adjustments and trials they face, it's not intended to be something that high-fantasy would offer readers (applies to all the books in this series). It's a simple, slightly raunchy, comfy read, perfect to relax with on a nice evening. And yes, there is some smut. The smut is always something to look forward to, since there are some weird and fun elements to it considering how the MMCs literally hiss/growl/rattle/coo/whateverthefuck but it works and it's hot. Merman guy up there^ did something else, I'll let you find out for yourself 👍
Also sometimes they vibrate. And that's a 💯 from me. Thank you dear author, I wish human men did that too ಥ_ಥ
give us moar, never stop

Looks like I'll be saying this till the end of time - do not judge the writing inside based on the ridiculous (and slightly terrifying) cover and title outside. Appearances in this case are indeed 💯 deceptive.

I think this was the best one yet!!! Love this couple so much! I wasn’t sure how she was going to pull off a merman story but she did it and did it well!
Again, the narrator is amazing you forget there’s not more than one narrating. I can’t wait for the next book to get to audible
