Discouraging the Duke

Rate this book
Welcome to the new world from Alexa Aston—Dukes Done Wrong.

Accused of something they never did. Five boys banished from their homes in disgrace, to the place where they find the brothers of their heart—and build new family ties that will last a lifetime.

A lonely army captain who suddenly finds himself a duke. A gentleman’s daughter running an estate, because her father no longer can. Two lonely souls whose sparks are undeniable...

Miles Notley returns home as the new Duke of Winslow after being sent away for accidentally killing his younger brother when he was ten years old, an act his older brother committed—and denied. With his brother’s death, Miles finds himself in unfamiliar waters. He has no idea how to run an estate, much less be a duke. Until he meets an intriguing young woman.

Emery Jenson came to Wildwood ten years ago with her parents, hired to be the estate’s steward and housekeeper. She has taken on more responsibility as her father’s mind grows weak and now runs the ducal country seat. When the new duke shows up, she schemes to hide her father’s deficiencies, believing the Duke of Winslow won’t remain long since the Season is in full swing and he will need to claim a bride and provide an heir.

But Miles isn’t going anywhere. He becomes captivated not only by Emery’s charm and confidence but admires her skills in making Wildwood a profitable estate. Miles decides no one but Emery can be his duchess—and he is up for the challenge, ready to convince the blunt beauty in the battle of wills that they can both come up winners—if she will only say yes.

Will Emery, who thinks she has found her place in the world and urges Miles to now find his, discover that the best place she can be is at the Duke of Winslow’s side?

I'm not feeling anything for either character. And I feel like there's no emotion in this book. The hero's younger brother if killed by his older brother, when they were children, and he was blamed, but the author write this dispassionately. It's like she was talking about baking bread...
Also, after the hero met the heroine for a day, he decided that he will marry her. Who does that? Nothing of importance happened so I could say "Yes, I understand why he woul say that."
All in all i don't care about the characters and I don't like the writing style.

We sadly have a lot to say when we don't like something in a book. But when we like pretty much everything, we are stuck with what to say...

This is my first book by this author and I was very happy with my first read. But a question was in my mind quite ofter while reading this book: did all/most aristocratic really had difficult childhoods as we so often see?

Ofc for the sake of engagement, entertainment and curiosity, we deal with problems in books otherwise we would loose interest. When everything is peaceful and happy there's not a lot to tell. So, that was a question that keept in my mind... what is your opinion?

The heroine is a lady but has to help her father (as he is a 4th son) to work for other gentlemen. And her mother also works in the same residence. So, she's too high born to be common and not high enough to be a lady. Quite a place to be... and very difficult when falling in love with a lord.
Our hero was very sweet but traumatized by events of his youth and it was very nice seeing the heroine helping him make peace with what happened.

I will definitely continue the series to see more of them.

PS: there are a few trigger warnings in this book, like murder of a child, rape off page and attempt rape.

The first book in the Dukes Done Wrong series, Discouraging the Duke follows Miles Notley, an army captain who was banished from his home as a young boy after being falsely accused of killing his younger brother. Fourteen years later, Miles must leave his fulfilling military career and return home to take over the dukedom. It is there where he meets Emery Jenson.

Emery’s parents work for the duke, and she spends most of her time dutifully assisting them. When Miles asks for her assistance in learning all about his new responsibilities, Emery readily agrees. The more time they spend together, the more she is drawn to Miles, but she believes their different social statuses will keep them apart. Can Miles convince Emery to be his duchess?

I love Miles. He is such a good and fair man, and he has a generous and loyal heart. His story is quite compelling and a little heartbreaking, especially what happened to him as a child. I like that the story has flashbacks to his childhood. It definitely explains a lot about his family dynamics and how he became one of the “Five Terrors” when he went to Turner Academy. Banished there at ten years old, Miles befriends four other boys who were banished for similar reasons, and the boys form a life-long bond. This found family, which includes the Terrors and teachers at the academy defines Miles.

Honorable, capable, and caring, Miles wants to do a good job which is why he enlists Emery’s help. She knows more about the estate than anyone, and Miles is pleased to be able to spend so much time with her. This gives him more opportunities to show her how well-suited they are. They are instantly attracted to each other, and their chemistry is great!

Emery and Miles might be instantly attracted to each other, but many obstacles stand in their way, the biggest being their social status. But Miles never gives up on Emery. I think the more time Emery spends with Miles, the more she falls in love with him. However, Emery has her own burdens, including a father whose health is deteriorating. Fearful that he might lose his job and home if the duke becomes aware of her father’s failing health, Emery tries to compensate by taking over most of his responsibilities. I like how Emery slowly learns to trust Miles and herself.

This is a great start to Alexa Aston’s Dukes Done Wrong series, and I look forward to finding out more about the four other “Terrors” in future books. Thanks so much to NetGalley, Alexa Aston, and Dragonblade Publishing for a copy of the book in exchange for my honest review.

Love Alexa’s books, this series is going to be just as good as the others wonderful hits in her library.

Duke Done Wrong series has some brilliant characters, like our hero Miles, who through this book were learn of what took him to a school for unwanted boys who belonged to the upperclass, there he meets Wyatt, Aaron, Donovan, & Finch who become life long friends.
All look set to have brilliant storylines, of their pasts and futures.

I’m so looking forward to reading more, and finding out the boy’s stories .

I received an Arc copy of this book and chose to post this review

This story starts out so sad. Three brothers the eldest Ralph the Marquess and heir to the Duke of Winslow, cruel and spoiled mistreats his middle brother Miles and youngest brother Tony. Tony who is only 6. Ralph goes on a rampage and pulls a gun on his brother Miles because Miles was defending his little brother Tony. Ralph fires the gun at Miles but Tony wanting to save the only person who loved him got in front and took the bullet. The disgusting evil brat blames the killing of there brother on Miles and at 10 years of age he is sent away to The Turner School for troubled aristocratic boys.

The Turner school turns out to be a savior for Miles he meets 5 boys with similar stories and they become best friends and family to one another.

Fourteen years later Miles is a Captain in his Majesties Army when he is advised he must return home to Wildwood because his father and brother both have died. There he meets Emery Jenson who has been helping her father the Stewart of the Estate and her Mother the housekeeper of the house manage things. Her and Miles have an immediate attraction to each other. It's not long before they become friends and then start to fall in love.

The storyline is very good. Its a Clean Romance only one very quick sex scene. The other is implied. What I didn't like about the story was the Father the Duke of Winslow and his Heir Ralph just died. They needed to suffer more!! Be punished more for the way Miles and Tony had been treated. The mother gets her just deserts from Miles but you find out why she was so cold toward him. But she too got off to easy. At the end of the story this Lowly Baron who was a rapist and tried to kill Miles and Emery at there wedding just gets house arrest. He needed to be thrown in prison and suffered death there. I almost gave this story 3 stars but I really did like all the other characters!!

I received an Advance Reader Copy from the publisher via NetGalley. This in no way impacted on my view.

When he turned 10, Miles Notley, second son of the Duke of Winslow, expected to have a fantastic birthday, especially with his little brother, Tony. But, it soon turned to devastation when his eldest brother, Ralph, shot and killed Tony, and laid the blame on Miles. Ralph, as the heir and golden child, was immediately believed, and so Miles was exiled to the Turner School, along with 4 other second sons, who had all been blamed for crimes by their elder brother, and exiled in similar ways. Dubbing themselves the Terrors, they became a family, and even now, four of them serve in the Peninsula for the King's army. But Miles is soon dispatched home following the deaths of his father and brother, as the new Duke of Winslow. He arrives home to find Wildwood in the capable hands of the estate steward and housekeeper, the Jenson's, as well as their beautiful daughter, Emery, who seems to be the glue holding the place together. But Emery is hiding a secret - her father is unwell, and with his mind gradually going, she's taking on more and more responsibility, to the extent that she is the steward, in all but name. Thinking that the new Duke will only stay at Wildwood for a couple of weeks, before heading to London to find a bride at the upcoming season, she in for a shock when the military man who appears in front of her states he's there to stay, and to discover more about the estate. Miles soon realises that Emery is everything he could ever want, and the perfect duchess to manage the estate and tenants, and he'll stop at nothing to make her see the truth of it all, and agree to marry him.

I loved this book! I recently ready Alexa's Dukes of Distinction series, and when I saw she had a new series coming, and the first book was available to review, I jumped at the chance to read it. Discouraging the Duke was the perfect introduction to the new Dukes Done Wrong series, and definitely whet the appetite for more. Both of the main characters were flawed, and had secrets, but they were strong, and capable, and truly cared about others, and more importantly, about each other. Because of his banishment, Miles barely knows anything about the estate, or his people, and the first thing he does when he returns is get rid of the old butler, who'd always hated him, and sent his mother to live at the Dower House, where she couldn't interfere in his running of his estate. He is happy to see that some of the old retainers and tenants he remembers from childhood are still around, and he promotes Thomas, the footman who was always kind to him, to butler. This, and his other actions, really endears him to the residents of Wildwood, and when he gets closer to Emery, who is universally loved by all, he's well on his way to being a fantastic Duke, much unlike his brother and father before him.

Emery's been on the estate for over ten years, and helped to nurse the old duke in his ill health, before his death. When his eldest son inherited, Ralph came on to Emery, and she hit him, and thought she'd have to flee the estate from his rage. Luckily for her, he died from a drunken horse accident, and she was safe to help her parents run the estate. But keeping the truth of just what she did from Miles was hard, especially as her father was declining so rapidly. Her feelings for Miles, too, weren't helping. She was more than attracted to him, and it was clear he reciprocated the feelings, but they were from very different stations in life. He's a duke, and she's the daughter of his housekeeper and estate manager, albeit an estate manager who's father was a viscount. There couldn't be anything that came from the relationship, at least in Emery's eyes, but for Miles, who's life had never been 'normal', he cared more about those who were kind, and caring, and strong, like Emery, to care what the ton might say if she was his Duchess. He had no intentions of going to London, to take part in all the society balls and events, and wanted to be at home, with the woman he loved, and with his people. They truly were perfect for each other, and there were so many touching moments in the the book, it was easy to pick it up, and read in one sitting. I can't wait for book 2!

Thank you to NetGalley and the publisher for a free copy of the book in exchange for an honest review.
I enjoyed the intro to the series by explaining how the "Dukes Done Wrong" started with the first book about Miles and his brothers. How Miles is sent to school and becomes part of the five Terrors where everyone is addressed as Mister and not a Lord. This allows me to better understand how he comes to love Emery. There is a villain that appears near the end of the story that gives more insight into his parents personality. I found it hard to believe that the Duke wanted to marry someone the first day he meets her and I did not feel the chemistry between the couple. I would have preferred the villain to have been woven through the story to explain others actions rather than added at the end. I look forward to reading the next story in the series.

Enjoyable Regency Romance

Very good “world building” and character development. The “suspense” element seemed a last minute addition that could have been better developed. Looking forward to seeing how the series progresses.

I know I listened to this audiobook, but I completely forgot to leave a review/rating/any record of it. This audiobook is (I believe) pretty new to hoopla, but I barely remember the story. Probably not a good sign. 🫣🫣

I was delighted to find the beginning of a new series by this author as I have really come to enjoy her writing. Miles Notley was banished from his home with a cloud hanging over his head and sent to a school for troubled boys. There he not only receives acceptance but also an education that exceeds anything he may have expected. He also finds life-long friends who become brothers to him. Serving his country in the war against Napolean, Miles receives word that both his father and brother have died and that he is the new Duke of Winslow. Finally, arriving at the home he never thought to see again, Miles discovers that whilst things are running very smoothly, the brains behind the enterprise are those of Miss Emery Jenson. As Miles begins to learn more about Emery, he also realizes that she would make the perfect wife for him. Thus begins a courtship, unusual to be sure, but one in which trust and love is born. The story is an emotional one as Miles sets out to right the wrongs of the past and to win the delightful Emery over. I loved the main characters in this novel and was especially glad that it came to a very satisfactory conclusion. I received a copy of this romance as a gift through Dragonblade Publishing and NetGalley and this is my honest and voluntary review.

Accused of something they never did. Five boys banished from their homes in disgrace, to the place where they find the brothers of their heart—and build new family ties that will last a lifetime. The Turner Terrors are now grown up, four are serving in the Peninsular Wars & the fifth is a vicar.
Miles Notley returns home as the new Duke of Winslow after being sent away for accidentally killing his younger brother Tony when he was ten years old, an act his older brother Ralph committed—and denied. Miles has no idea how to run an estate, much less be a duke. Emery Jenson came to Wildwood ten years ago with her parents, hired to be the estate’s steward and housekeeper. The first in a new series & another page turner by the author. I was taken on a roller coaster of emotions, my heart went out to all five young boys so unjustly treated by their families & they all have me routing for them. The characters had strength & depth, I loved Miles who was the most down to earth Duke who won every ones respect & love, he fell for Emery hard & fast & strove to win her. Emery was a delight, intelligent, caring & loyal. Their road to a HEA wasn’t easy nor straightforward but it did make for an engrossing read & once again it was 3am before I turned the final page. I’m looking forward to the rest of the series
My honest review is for a special copy I voluntarily read

Miles Notley never expected to become Duke of Winslow and when he returns home from the war he's in for a surprise. Emery, the stewart's daughter is actually the one managing the duchy because her father is failing. He greatly admires her. That admiration turns to something more and he wants Emery to become his duchess but she feels there is too much difference in their station in life. Can Miles convince her that he cares nothing for her rank and that he wants to marry her?

I was on the fence about this book whether to rate it 3 or 4 stars. I would have preferred a 3.5 rating because I thought the opening chapters about Miles's childhood were very well done and gave a great foundation for each of his "Terror" friends. It did take quite a bit into the book to get to adult Miles though. I liked Miles. He cares about his tenants and servants and treats everyone well. Emery was a interesting character. I liked that she was smart and could run the duchy keeping it profitable by herself. The romance between Miles and Emery was a little too rushed especially on Miles's part. Upon meeting her, he immediately knew he wanted to marry her. I would have preferred a bit more slow-burn type of romance for them. The villain came way too late in the book to really have the impact it should. It would have been better for the story if he had been woven in sooner. That plot twist helped explain his mother's behavior.

I liked the idea of the "Terrors" and look forward to reading more of their stories. I voluntarily read the advanced reader copy and all opinions are my own.

Miles is an army captain who was wrongly accused of a horrible crime and banished from his family's estate as a young boy. Emery has been helping manage the estate along with her parents for nearly a decade. When Miles' father and older brother both pass away within a week of one another (and no one is mourning them, btw) Miles returns to his old home as the new Duke of Winslow.

Miles decides he is going to bring a whole attitude adjustment to his estate --- including better pay and more gratitude for the many people that work there. This also apparently includes making his unofficial stewardess Emery his new duchess, who he falls in love with in seconds.

I just couldn't buy a single part of this storyline from the beginning. The couple's relationship develops in record time, even by regency standards. I think I would have enjoyed this one more with a little more character and plot development --- it was a quick read that was just pretty bland throughout.

I am, however, excited to give the rest of this series a try as it will follow the Miles' friends, who I am excited to have back stories for.

Thanks to Dragonblade publishing for making this book available to me via #Netgalley because it is now my favourite book ever. I will never stop recommending this book.

We follow Miles Notley from when he was a young boy who was accused of killing his younger brother by his older brother who actually killed him. Because of this Miles was sent off to a boarding school never to see his family again (yes, even during the holiday he was not allowed home). After the death of his father, his older brother became the duke but that did not last long because he died soon after as a result of his drinking and pride.

It is left to Miles to leave his very important role in the military and retun back home to be the new Duke. When he gets home is meets Emery who has been helping her parents who worked for the previous dukes. He immediately takes interest in her as she is showing him around and a girl cannot help but fall for his very respectful, charming and sexy self.

She begins to feel a lot more for him that she thinks she has a right to. He is a Duke and soon he would need to marry a woman that fits his station. Miles who has seen the bottom of the drum know that he wants a woman who love him not a woman who fits his position! I simply loved their relationship. The lingering gazes and the steamy touches were just everything, not to forget the steamy night in the barn!

Sweet story, H was 10 when he was accused of a crime and sent away. He's now inherited his father's title, and makes changes on his estates but can't resolve past hurts. It's a common theme by this author, HEA is gained with everything resolved with hints about next book.

I love period romances. I love the politics of titles and the formality of it all. Everyone seems so prim and proper and I just revel in all of the details. I especially love when the highborn falls in love with a commoner. It's just so romantic, hence my pleasure at reading Discouraging the Duke by Alexa Aston.

Miles is the middle born son of the Duke of Winslow. His father could care less for him and favors his heir, Ralph, who is a terribly bad seed. His mother favors Tony, the youngest son, leaving Miles without love, affection, and really any kind of positive relationship at all, except for the love of his little brother Tony. When Ralph kills Tony and Miles is blamed, Miles is shipped off to a school for troubled boys and eventually makes his way to the army, where he excels until he learns his father and brother have both passed and he is now the Duke of Winslow. He returns to his childhood home to find the estate in great shape thanks to Miss Emery Jenson, the daughter of his steward. She's knowledgeable, confident, and captivates Miles immediately. He's taken with her and convinced she's to be his duchess. She is loving, and he's convinced she would make an amazing mother. Miles isn't interested in being the same kind of duke he grew up with and he definitely doesn't want the same kind of duchess. The only problem is Emery. Will she be convinced that Miles is doing the right thing in pursuing her?

I enjoyed this so much. It reminded me a lot of The Chase Family series by Lauren Royal, which I enjoyed immensely. There's romance, intrigue, and a few surprises along the way to keep things interesting. Even when I thought I knew what would happy, Aston kept me guessing.

No Spoiler Review 👇🏻

This is the first book of the new Dukes Done Wrong series. I’ve read a few books by Alexa Aston so I knew I had to read this one. This might be my new favourite book by this author!

This book starts off pretty heavy. From the first few pages it had me feeling so many emotions.

I really like the plot of these second sons meeting at a school for troubled boys. They were sent away for things they didn’t do and become friends. I know I already want to read the whole series, and each book about each Duke.

Miles finds himself the new Duke after his brother passes.

Emery the main female character, her parents are the lead housekeeper and steward of the dukes household. She is very independent and a strong female lead! I really liked her character!!

I enjoyed the alternating narration from these characters in this book. It’s well written and kept me very entertained throughout. I loved the main characters chemistry and romance! It made my heart happy.

If you are looking for an awesome, cute, short historical romance read, with a bit of steam I highly recommend this one!

(Also I love the purple cover!! 😍)

Miles Notley was sent away from home at only ten years old,  after being accused of something he never did.  It turned out to be the best thing for him and the other boys he met at a very special school.  Those boys would grow to be closer to him than his own family. Many years later he is home again in a role he never expected.

Emery Jensen is the daughter of the estate steward and housekeeper on the Duke of Winslow's ancestral home.  She has been helping both her parents for the last few years,  but just lately her father has needed her more.  There are many changes coming in a short space of time.  What will that mean for those that call this place home???

A tragic start that will have you in tears,  so get the tissues out.  Great strong characters that easily keep our attention,  and a hero who knows what he wants.

A great start to what I know is going to be a fabulous series.  I will definitely be reading all of them.

I loved it.

The first in a new series and I definitely want to read every book already.
Miles was sent away to a school for the sons of aristocrats that had done the unimaginable. In Miles' case he was blamed for the death of his younger brother. When he unexpected inherits after the death of his father and brother, he must take on the role he was never prepared for.
Emery has lived on the estate since her parents became the steward and housekeeper. She has always helped them but as her father starts losing his memory she has almost completely taken over as steward.
I loved Miles who could have been come hateful and jaded but instead is sweet, generous, and wants a family of his own. While like all romance novels, the love is near instantaneous it does feel real.
There were a couple of times where the book stood out a repetitive in stating the the youngest was the mothers favorite and the oldest the dukes favorite but it wasn't overwhelming.
The last minute villain was also unnecessary I think but overall this book was great. I hope Finch has his story next.

Review coming soon…

Pretty much a love despite society ranks, a Duke who was not the planned heir, some unnecessary conflict between the MCs and an old family acquaintance. Some past behaviors accounted for … and a new Duke who means to treat his Duchess and children with love.

DNF at 44%. This is messy, with things happening one on top of each other, with no room to breathe and little character development. The story can't stay on one topic for a second. A character thinks one thing, then the exact opposite in the next paragraph. Emery is especially scattered. The afternoon she spends with Ralph will give you whiplash, and her thoughts about Miles are like those of a hyperactive child. One second she wants to hide her father's ailments from him, the next she wants to sniff him, the next she thinks he's cocky, then surprisingly overfamiliar with his servants, then she remembers her dad, but can't stay on that too long because she has to puzzle out Miles' past, but she's not a gossip, so she won't ask, but what about her father's health? My head was spinning.

The things that they focus on and the things they skip are also head scratchers. Why do I care about Beckerman, the German who was sometimes a servant to Wellesley, the lieutenant-general? That's it, that's all we know about him. Why did you give him a name and nationality? Was he a real person? I still DO. NOT. CARE. It had no impact on the story. On the other hand, we see none of Miles' time at the school making these lifelong friends, except his first 10 minutes there. Why?

Also, the dialogue is atrocious. I got to when they kissed for the first time, I literally went "yech!" What they said and where they were standing was so ridiculous, I immediately shut off my kindle.

That's a big no. I have no plans to read more from this author.

Discouraging the Duke is the first book in a new series from Alexa Aston. Five young boys accused of crimes they did not commit, sent away to a school for troubled boys, where they became family. Miles is the second son of a duke, after the death of his younger brother, he is sent away in punishment. Many years later he returns to the family home, as the duke after the unexpected deaths of his father and older brother.

Emery came to Wildwood after Miles was sent away, the daughter of the Steward and the Housekeeper. Her father's health is failing, she takes on many of his responsibilities in an effort to hide this fact from the Duke. Losing this job means losing their home.

Starting this book from the perspective of a child was... a choice. It wasn't something I enjoyed, I much prefer when the deep dark secret is something the reader learns at the same time as the heroine.

The writing style seemed very young compared to previous books I've read by this author.

I enjoyed the story for what it was. The characters were fine, I wasn't really all that attached to them. There was problem with showing and not telling. The characters just told you exactly what they were thinking and what they wanted.

I have said it many times, I am such a sucker when stories start when they are younger. This has to be one of the most emotional beginnings when 5 friendships form due to being wronged by their families. I own 41 books by this author and this ranks in the top. If you haven't read her Hollywood Series I recommend it.

My heart was torn over what the H endured. You felt his love and care for his brother Anthony and the aftermath it left. I have already preordered the next book in this series. You can tell by their stories they told when they met, they will be page turners.

There is mild lovemaking, outside of marriage, heat level 2.5 out of 5. I felt a connection to this couple so it was filled with love.

There are several nasty villains, and this writer knows how to wring every emotion when writing these dastardly character's. Some surprises, suspense for sure, romance and twists you will find within this unique story. Not only great main character's but also wonderfully written secondary character's.

No cheating, no cliffhanger, HEA, romance, tad of spice and a sweet epilogue. I recommend this amazing author and her novels. (ljb)

The general concept of the boys and how they made their way in the world blah blah blah was really promising. Emery was also very promising. I'm not a fan of insta-love, but I can respect it if well done. What I cannot respect is a woman on top of that, I just don't find the rest of the storyline compelling, so I dnfd

DNF.

I really wanted to like this, and I tried but I couldn't after I felt no sparks between the characters, no chemistry, it was almost like reading a literature book. Where was the romance? It was pretty mellow, and it didn't take my breath away. Unfortunately.

It pains me to describe the characters as boring...like what was their one defining characteristic that made them shine? The male lead was still okay - responsible and striving to be different from the man who banished him from his home. The heroine however, was...dull. I understand she's meant to be a great, responsible and mature character but...I don't know...when there are no ups and downs or passionate responses, I guess it just makes everything boring. Heck, I even sound repetitive at this point, it makes me realize that the two leads are just too similar - boring. This may work in reality, but in a novel where you expect to be swept off your feet, this certainly wasn't it.

Thank you to Dragonblade Publishing for providing this ARC via NetGalley in exchange of an honest review. All thoughts and opinions are my own.

"Discouraging the Duke" is the first book in a standalone series consisting of five books that will follow five boys who all gets to know each other when they are all being sent to school for aristocrats who are (sometimes wrongly) accused of crimes.

Miles Notley is the first out of "the five Terrors" and I liked seeing how different he is as Duke compared to how his father and brother were. He was nice and welcoming to his people, not just being a decent human being but inviting them to dinner and events of his life to share with all of them. The first chapters focus on him when he was ten and we get to see firsthand how he watches his younger brother die and then gets the blame for it. I think it would have been better with that informative beginning as a prologue instead, since it was quite long and kind of derailed the romance part of the book much longer into the story. Although, it definitely added to a clearer picture of how cruel and unpleasant his father and brother were and made Miles stand out in a much better light as the story proceeded.

The romance between Miles and Emery is fast as lightning. He literally takes one look at her and decides he wants to marry her. I know that historical romance is not the genre if you want to have relationships who grow under a longer period, but this felt way too fast even for a historical romance so it kind of brought down the book a notch. I mean, insta-lust is fine but instalove is 9 times out of 10 a no-no for me.

To sum it all up, it was an okay read and I do want to read the next book of the series (I am always a sucker for books that follow a group of people and I want to give it one more chance), but it was not anything out of the ordinary unfortunately.

Just need to clear one thing up: for me, a 3 stars review of a historical romance is not comparable to a 3 star review of a fantasy book for example. I have different standards and expectations for different genres, and therefore it sometimes get tricky to rate a book accordingly to how I feel when I cannot help but compare it to earlier reads (even though they are not the same type of books). Soo take my ratings with a pinch of salt and remember that different genres means different ratings systems (I really wish Goodreads would add half stars to their rating system).
