Unwrap Me

Rate this book
When college sophomore Danny Simmons returned home for the holidays, he'd expected to find his mother with a tray of goodies and his siblings bickering just like old times. He'd even been prepared for his father's obnoxious and mildly-offensive jokes. What he couldn't have predicted was the gorgeous Trevor Gutierrez spending the holiday break with his family.

With his deep laugh, scruffy exterior, silky voice, and smile that could melt the snow in the front yard, Danny finds it impossible to resist his father's coworker. Luckily, he doesn't have to, because it seems all Trevor wants for Christmas is Danny, and Danny is more than happy to give him that gift.

Hmmm. The main theme here is overcoming internalized homophobia caused by parental conditioning, and that’s not usually something I can handle reading about. It’s not super heavy here, but I guess it took me off guard in a Christmas short? Which definitely qualifies as an “it’s me, not the book” situation. But I also never fully bought in to Trevor’s character. So I guess I’m going to round down even though that feels a little too harsh for this one...

He couldn’t form the proper words to express that there was no shame when he kissed Trevor.

This was cute! And honestly more substantial than I expected? From the blurb, I sorta thought this novelette was going to be pure erotica, but there was some great family interaction, some ruminations on being in the closet and the conflict of loving your family even when they aren't totally accepting of your sexuality. The writing was good and the romance was fun. It's not a typical romance (HFN) and is more about the main character getting to explore himself and learning to be more comfortable with who he is, but it was still sexy and romantic.

Also I yam who I yam and I love Christmas stories. 3.5 stars.

There's no HEA or HFN so I'd qualify this as erotica. Whatever it was, it was short and hot. I'm not entirely sure about the power dynamics of a college student hooking up with his dad's coworker while they're home for Christmas but the younger man left their encounters feeling empowered so hopefully that counts for something.

CW: homophobic remarks, parents ignore that their son is gay

5/12/22 - Gay Christmas erotica >>>>> breathing

2/8/21 - This was a quick and easy smutty read with some surprisingly strong themes of family and self-acceptance packed into the short page count. Did I read a Christmas smut book in August? Yes, sometimes it's needed.

This is a sexy short with no HEA (positive vibes, but no declarations of love or plans to see each other again)

Not wild about how many times the younger hero was called “the boy” but I guess that is part and parcel with the age gap kink

A lot of page space spent telling us how the younger hero filled his day — descriptions of video games, baking, etc. Quite little time outside of the two sexy scenes were actually spent with the other hero. Didn’t add much to either the sex or the emotional connection, and something this short doesn’t have room for that kind of filler

Contains: age gap (~19 and 31), dad’s coworker, homophobic parents, internalized homophobia, Christmas, closeted hero, secret sex

4/5🔥 (one hands/mouths scene; one anal scene)

Short and sexy age gap Christmas novella about two men who shouldn't want each other at all, but still do.

It was perfectly written and expertly told. I think it was just this tad bit too short for me to connect with the characters on all the levels I wanted to.

I did enjoy the buildup and the stream, and the very tentative ending that is barely a HFN worked very well for me here. I definitely enjoyed it and I'm looking forward to reading more by this author.

I read UNWRAP ME quickly and overall it was good, though die-hard HEA fans be aware that this is not a HEA. Danny is a sophomore in college and while he's out to his siblings and some friends, his parents don't know he's gay. Growing up around his father's often homophobic comments has left Danny with conflicted feelings over his desires and he's struggled to find a healthy relationship with another man. Meeting Trevor really changes things for Danny because Trevor is charming, sexy, and more than willing to help Danny explore.

Everything happens pretty quickly in UNWRAP ME and I wish we could have had a longer story because Danny and Trevor are really great. We learn a lot about Danny but not much about Trevor so he's still a bit of a mystery. The story is from Danny's POV mostly but there were a few times where a sentence or paragraph appeared to be from Trevor's POV but it was never clear and that made the writing a little awkward at times. Overall, a pretty solid erotic novella.

Content Warning: Homophobic comments; hero doesn't feel comfortable coming out to his parents

Short involving Danny a 21yr college student arriving home fort Christmas. Finds out his father has invited a 32?yr old coworker to celebrate. The two end up having a fling and readers are left to wonder if they're attraction and relationship ends there or if more is in store

I think this is the only book with a bathroom scene in it with a character actually using the facilities to poo. That kind of made it really realistic to me because human's have bodily functions, lol. I also think it's the first book I've read with a son or daughter having a fling with a parent's coworker.

Very sexy.

A great, well-rounded story for the short length. Nicely developed characters & scenario with great chemistry between Danny & Trevor. The romantic in me, though, wants a more couple/relationship kind of end that what we got. I like Danny's newfound confidence about sex & his refusal to settle for less again in the future, but they (Danny & Trevor) couldn't exchange numbers or hint at doing more after this holiday break? That was a bit of a bummer, but it certainly doesn't ruin the story completely.

Great book

This is a beautiful sweet novella I wanted to read it because it sounded good. I'm glad I did because it was brilliant. It showed Danny getting better strength in his belief in himself and his true self is amazing and deserves everything he desires. Plus whom ever it is is righ6t not wrong. It was very good reading about loving who you are no matter what anyone says.

Young college student returns home for Christmas and finds his dad's coworker is also staying at the house for the holiday. I stopped reading after the coworker commented he saw the college student's photo on the dad's desk and thought he was cute. I was also worried these two were going to start secretly banging in the family house while also still trying to not out the college student to the dad.

Short and very sweet

The complaints about no HEA are ridiculous, in my opinion. This was a great little treat to read and the sex scene was hot. I also thought that the underlying theme of the novela was powerful and beautifully communicated in such a short form.

Young college boy home for the holidays has a fling with their houseguest. It’s nice, older guy showing the younger man how to be intimate. I like that it ends as a “that was nice, have a good life” ending, not an insta-love-you-forever thing.

Short and sweet

I wanted something short and sweet, and this exactly fit the bill. No angst, no conflict, no drama - just a quick holiday tryst. Perfect dose of sweetness to start the day~

WHOA! So glad I read this. I follow Harbon on Twitter but this is the first of his fiction that I've read. This man can write. If he's reading this he should feel confident that he's talented. Now I have to go read more of his work.

I didn’t love this. I love that it was talking about the shame and guilt parents instill in queer kids, but it could have been a little more subtle about it as it felt very in your face ever sentence. Also, I don’t mind an age gap but Danny felt very young which made it feel a bit much.

This was actually a really wholesome holiday erotica.... which seems contradictory but it's not!! Fun family holiday shenanigans and a college boy opening up and getting to feel comfortable with who he is and exploring his sexuality. Super cute, sweet, and steamy!

First of all, this is not romance. This is a sexual awakening which works perfectly for the length of the story. I enjoyed it a lot.

Confusing & disjointed

I know it is a novella but it is like the author just cut out a whole section within the last chapter because the ending does not actually make any sense.
