Homerun Proposal

Rate this book
The proposal was Score a homerun and take my virginity. Except, my proposal went to the wrong brother. It was supposed to go to my best friend, but as fate would have it, it fell into the hands of his infuriatingly hot, irritatingly charming older brother. Lane Collins is Orleans University's All-Star baseball captain. Cocky pitcher. Player on and off the field. The life of every party. And the same guy I’ve crushed on in secret since we were kids. He’s always been out of my league. That is until he signs the dotted line on a proposal that wasn’t meant for him, and offers to teach me… everything. His one and only condition? Don’t get attached. Easier said than done when my heart is involved. Now, it’s a whole new ballgame.

✨ second dnf of the year ✨

time of death: page 127 🪦

the quote that had me physically shutting this book:

“i want to touch his… cock.
penis?
dick?
throbbing member?
tallywacker?
trouser trout?
whatever the proper word is, i want to touch it.”

excuse me… WHAT?

this book also desperately needed better editing overall.

over three strikes, and this book is out. (⚾️ pun.)

i have officially fallen victim to picking up a book because of it’s semi-cute cover.

this made me cringe too much to be enjoyable.
- the n-nervous, annoying s-stuttering
- the diabolical euphemisms for ‘penis’
- the ‘i’m not like other girls’ mentality
no thank you. not for me.

note to self: stop buying full series before knowing if you’ll like them!!!

MCs:
- Lane, 21/22
- Hallie, 18

Book info:
- No cheating, third act breakup
- OWD (see notes)
- Sports romance
- Best friend's brother
- Spice coaching
- Virgin FMC, manhoe MMC
- HFN (living together)

Notes:
- OWD, not really, but previous hookups did appear at some point wanting to get Lane's attention, but he ignored them.
- Based on Lane's POV, he wanted her since they were in high school, but he never acted on it. Because she's his little brother’s best friend. 🙄
- They never used protection because, according to him, he's clean and she's on bc 🤦‍♀️
- His pet name, "baby," is so icky to read. Idk, but for some reason in my imagination, I feel like he uses this term all the time if he can't remember the name of his hookup. 🤷‍♀️

I have to admit it took me a long time to warm up to Lane; to be honest, I'm not even sure if I like him even after reading the book.

When he got Hallie's proposal (which isn't even for him; it was meant for his brother, Eli, also Hallie's best friend) he couldn't stop thinking about it and her. So after a week, he decided to take up that role and chance to finally be with Hallie by taking her v-card 🤢

According to Lane, since Hallie moved in with him and Eli, he has been living in hell because he can't stop wanting or thinking about her. Buuuut he had no problems sneaking out women into their dorm at night, despite this "living in hell" dilemma (mentioned off page). He was not even ashamed of telling Eli and Hallie about his day plans, which may or may not include finding a cleat chaser; he was actually smirking at Hallie when he said this. 🙄

So how will I be able to believe he's been pining for her for YEARS when he has no qualms about sleeping around and even letting Hallie see those women? For the life of me, I just can't fucking buy this BS. You don't act like this around the person that you certainly want. I know this is fiction, but seriously? That was low and disgusting. 😤

But I have to give credit when credit is due. Lane is a good coach when it comes to this smex thing (*coughs* manhoe *coughs*). He just knows all the right things to do and say to help Hallie step out of her comfort zone and be at ease with her sexuality. He's also caring all the time, especially in that chapter when she was on her period and got really bad cramps. He took care of her and made sure she was comfortable—a totally sweet gesture, btw. He's also protective; I did appreciate him punching a guy who insulted Hallie and for telling off his previous hookup after she made snide remarks about her. Like I said, he had his good times; he's patient, sweet, thoughtful, and overall dependable when he realized he wanted Hallie for real and not just because of her proposal. Also, the grand gesture at the end? Some readers would probably swoon over him and his gesture, but I only got secondhand embarrassment from that. Although I liked his lines and felt his sincerity, I really think he should've said those confessions in private and without making it a huge spectacle. But it is what it is. 🤷‍♀️

Despite the good he had going, the constant reminders of his reputation always left a sour taste, which diminished the plus points he earned from his sweet gestures. It was bad enough that he fucked around since he was a college freshman, even though "apparently" he wanted Hallie. And I really, really don't need this gross information about what "Old Lane" would do if Hallie wasn't in the picture. I.JUST.WANT.IT.TO.STOP!!!!

As for Hallie, her quirks annoy the crap out of me. Idk why, tbh, I didn't find it cute even at the beginning. The stuttering around Lane eventually gets exhausting along the way. Maybe this is supposed to be adorable. But her stammering was irksome. Why does she become speechless whenever he's around? I really hoped and waited until the end that she would get over this, but, nah, it didn't happen. However, there are things that I did like about her. I like her dedication to her podcast and that she's unapologetically herself all the time. I liked that she didn't change a thing about her and that she really owned her interests and quirks. I appreciated it the most when she became comfortable with her sexuality and learned not to shy away from expressing what she wanted.

Overall, this story didn't work for me. Though Lane did prove himself in the second half of the book, I just can't get over the annoyance I felt from the first half, and that feeling ruined the rest of the story for me. This might be a me case too, but I didn't feel the emotional connection between them. Sexual tension? Sure, off the charts. But emotional pull? Meh.

Anyway, while this book isn't for me, other readers might feel differently, and to each their own as always.

=====================

based on the reviews, he's been secretly pining for her for YEARS! and yet he's a notorious playboy??? i should probably read this to get the full context, but reading that info is already making me a little annoyed.

Fuck off this is my fav read of the year

Public service announcement: Maren Moore puts crack in her books. CRACK. Yes, I said crack.
My first Maren book and she didn’t even buy me dinner before she soaked my panties. I’ll allow it, though. I did allow it. Matter of fact, can ya do it again?

If I could be completely unhinged this entire review I totally would but I’ll contain myself I guess🤥

Okay, unpack Kim, unpack it. What happens when I CANT UNPACK?? Because what the fuck, I just spent my entire morning and afternoon kicking my feet in the air and screaming at my kindle because this was literally so damn hot, fun and swoon worthy. I have so many unread messages and I have ignored every single person because I rather be reading about baseball daddy Lane and his giant throbbing trouser trout. I mean honestly, like I said fucking CRACK. IN .THE. BOOK. IT IS IN THERE. anyways, these two were so well thought out and perfect in every single way. The chemistry had me forgetting that I’m just a bridge troll sitting on my couch reading about 2 strangers going at it. Seriously y’all, I’m wearing a shrek shirt and I’m in desperate need of a shower. But guess what? Maren gave me that MC energy that transports you straight into the story. Reality? It doesn’t exit. If that ain’t good writing style, idk what is. Lane, I literally can’t even. The MOUTH on that man. He’s my #1 book bf. You can’t top him and you can’t have him. sorry. The innocent virgin Hallie made him go crazy and it was so fun to see her grow into herself and get comfortable with her body. God I fucking love that. And baseball men? I’m through. Obsessed. Take me outback, I’m done for yall. In all seriousness, this book felt so good to read and I’ll probably never stfu about it. I want the physical copy to have its own bed next to mine with a pink and red bed set. I want to order my own Lane on Amazon. This book wasn’t just spicy, it was fucking funny. Every single thing about this book, I fucking loved.

If you’re a spicy sports girly that loves to laugh, this is for you and if you don’t read it on 𝐒𝐞𝐩𝐭𝐞𝐦𝐛𝐞𝐫 𝟖𝐭𝐡 when it releases, I’ll literally bother you until you do. Okay, bye 💅🏻

Homerun Proposal is a fun and steamy college sports romance featuring best friend's brother, he falls first, "teach me", and forced proximity. The story follows Hallie, a self-proclaimed conspiracy theorist nerd, and Lane, her roommate, crush, and campus playboy. When Hallie finds herself struggling to connect with any potential romantic interests, she proposes her best friend take her virginity so she can stop worrying. However, when the proposal ends up in the wrong hands, Hallie instead strikes a deal with Lane to teach her how to interact with the opposite sex.

I had such a good time reading this book, it absolutely flew by despite being very simple. Hallie and Lane were so cute together; Lane was absolutely gone for Hallie from the very beginning and it was adorable reading about him trying to get her on the same page as him. While there might not have been much going on plot-wise, I think the romance and characters held up the book for me. This might not be the perfect story and it could absolutely use some work, but, I still found it very enjoyable. The only thing that really affected the rating for me would be the quirky label that was so forced on Hallie's character, and the sometimes cringy writing.

Alexa play the boy is mine.
Maren Moore has a way of taking a story & making it both nostalgic & new at the same time. Homerun Proposal reads like a 90s romantic comedy but also a hot/steamy 2000s movie. How? Don't ask me, that's just the amazingness that is Maren Moore. She puts crack in her books.

Baseball Romance (imo) is so underrated, so I'm happy the world is going to know who Lane Collins is because lawd almighty this MAN. *Alexa play the boy is mine*

He's by far one of my favourite Maren mcs & the way he loves, cares & *understands* Hallie is just beautiful. He is both possessive and calm, dirty talking and swoonworthy & has that perfect combination of a cocky bad boy & golden retriever. The way he teaches Hallie to own her body and is just completely GONE over her *sighhhh*
I mean, he googles how to help during her period, wears her good luck bracelet and whenever he says "Hallie Girl"?...ON THE FLOOR.

Hallie, my quirky beautiful girl. I think out of all of Marens FMC so far I've connected most with Hallie. She's so very unique in herself, she doesn't hide her originality, she's vulnerable & sweet & makes mistakes. I loved we saw her owning up to her mistakes & acknowledging that she had things she needed to work on. It was refreshing & made her so relatable. I love how we saw her come to own her body and her wants and desires.

If you love quirky FMC’s, confident MMC’s & a different kind of sports romance, then pick this book up. It's a beautiful NA romance about allowing yourself to take that leap, find your person and being comfortable in your own skin. As with all Maren's books it has the perfect amount of sweet, swoon and SPICE.

Yeah I can't believe I wasted $5 on this.

It was cute but DAMN the entire book revolved around her being "not like other girls". That was the literal reason for the 3rd act breakup.

Now I'm a quirky girl myself but the entirety of the FMC's personality was her being "different" because she liked aliens and the college kids on campus didn't understand.

I think I just need to quit with the college romances.

This is what I get for straying from my tbr and going in blind on KU. (Except I don't have KU so I paid like $5 for this)

Just a quirky girl living her quirky life.

I appreciated that Hallie wasn’t ashamed to be her authentic self and she carried that on throughout the entire book, never changing to fit in, but it was mentioned and obnoxious amount. To the point where it took me out of whatever quite moment was happening.

This story never seriously hooked me. There was nothing special to it. A very cookie cutter best friend’s brother who’s a player, that helps her with her sexuality. The characters were average, the chemistry was Luke warm at best, and the climax was disappointing and unnecessary. I can never get behind the “love interest whose been pining for the mc for years but still sleeps with everyone” character. Especially when he sleeps with a ton of women while living with Hallie and there’s no real reason why he can’t go after her.

This did have its cute moments. Lane was an adorable teddy bear when it came to Hallie and they were cute together. I also liked how the were upfront with Lane’s brother/Hallie’s best friend about what they were doing. There was no forced taboo aspect to it, Eli told them that they were both adults and could do what they want, which is typically the correct response. Solid read, wish it was better but not upset that I read it.

4.5 ★ “i’m good wherever you are, hallie girl.” 🥹

i adored this book so much! it felt so nostalgic of the love stories i loved growing up, the girl who never imagined her best friend’s older brother (a hot baseball star !!!) would look twice at her, but turns out he’s been noticing for a while

hallie was so cute & nerdy and so unapologetically herself. i feel like often the “quirky girl” character either isn’t confident or feels the need to put other girls down, and that was not hallie at all, which i appreciated so much! she had no desire to change who she was or to give up her nights in reading dramione instead of partying (felt). she was such a fun character, and lane was so head over heels for her it was adorable. i love how patient lane was and how hallie became the person he could finally open up to.

4.5✨ now how delightful was this?!?! It was like an early 2000’s rom com but like really really steamy. I really wasn’t expecting that much spice but it was HOT. Lane is such a dream and this is the kind of book that will have you giggling and kicking your feet. It’s so charming. Maybe baseball is my new favorite sport…⚾️

This was super fun and cute, and also pretty spicy. I feel like the awkward virgin and playboy jock trope can either go one of two ways, and thankfully this was good.

There were some cringey and cheesy moments, but considering it was made very apparent that Hallie is “quirky” at the beginning of the book, I realized quickly what I had gotten myself into. The one thing I really loved about Hallie’s character is that she’s unapologetically herself. I feel like a lot of times in books like these the “weird girl” is supposed to feel shame for her peculiar interests, but not Hallie. She rocks her Bigfoot and alien shirts confidently. Her internal monologue was also killing me. There were moments where I actually laughed out loud because some of the stuff she did and/or said.

Lane Collins was not what I expected in the least. I was fully prepared for him to be kind of a dick, but he wasn’t by any means. I feel like he had the most character growth, and I really appreciated him as a main love interest. He supported Hallie, and was so genuinely sweet and thoughtful. Also when something is revealed at the end, I had one of those “yep. called it” moments.

I felt like the “conflict” was kind of unnecessary, and it’s one of the reasons I didn’t rate this higher. However, I am super looking forward to Reese and & Viv’s book. I am a sucker for a charmer and a girl who can’t stand him.

The heroine in this book was so obnoxiously not like other girls and quirky, it annoyed the shit out of me. The hero was supposedly pining after her for years but still a huge manwhore and kinda misogynistic. He called a girl he hooked up with once a body he used and immediately forgot

I'm going to be honest and say I am extremely torn about this review. There are things I really liked, but there are some things that missed the mark for me. So I'll list them and you can make the decision.

Likes:
I really liked that we got so much of Lanes perspective. I wasn't a huge fan of Hallie's so I enjoyed having Lane. Him falling so hard was one of my big reasons for liking the book. In the same vein I liked how he was with her and the cute moments. I also liked the best friends brother but that it wasn't a secret because that blow up can be almost cliche.

Dislikes:
Okay, there may be a lot of small things that bothered me. 1) Eli is her best friend and we see him what 3 times? They are so close like siblings but we have no scenes and he's always busy? 2) he gives up going to the MLB and has no plan but to follow her to NYC. What in the privileged white person hell is that plan.? 3) Hallie being so "different" and "quirky" kind of got annoying. It gave "I'm not like other girls" vibes and bored on obnoxious at moments. Also......and I can't believe I'm saying this. But for a large portion of the book we just lose all plot. We skip weeks at a time and only get sex scenes versus actual building relationship scenes.

Overall it has moments of "oh my goddd, so cute" but the negatives can't be ignored I think.

Tropes:

- Best Friend’s Brother
- Forced Proximity
- Virgin Heroine & Playboy Hero
- He Falls First
- Spicy Lessons

OMG!! I ATE THIS UP!! I couldn’t put this down! This was my first read by Maren Moore and definitely won’t be my last. She KILLED IT!

Lane Collins welcome to the book boyfriend roster! This is the first book in the Orleans University series following Hallie and Lane. Lane is the star pitcher of the baseball team & Hallie is a freshman & Lane’s little brothers best-friend who grew up next door. When Hallie accidentally proposes the idea of taking her virginity to him, thinking it was actually his brother she was asking. Lane ends up accepting her proposal and teach her everything. The spicy lessons were EVERYTHING!!🥵

I am obsessed with Lane Collins. He was sweet & thoughtful but also possessive & dominant!!

I’m already dying for the next book in this series!! I really hope it’s Reese & Vivi!! Because it will definitely be an enemies to lovers and if you know me that’s my favorite trope.

Lane & Hallie had me all tied up in knots.
Read this if you like:
Mutual pining
Best friend's brother
Forced proximity
Sports romance (baseball)
Dirty dirty talk
Shower scenes
Consent
Fakeish dating
Conspiracy theories
and giggles.

This book had everything I look for in a romance novel, fun and light-hearted while still getting to the heavy & sultry bits.
The only thing I didn't like?

Even more exciting... this is only book one in a new series from Moore; next up is Reese & Viv and I am stoked!!!

Oh my goodness, Homerun Proposal was SO FREAKING CUTE. I'm a 90s girl, so I remember all those fun romcoms like Never Been Kissed and She's All That - this book is basically a sports romance version of those movies. I'm SO THRILLED I got the chance to read this as an ARC, such a fun surprise. I was basically giddy reading some parts; it's so sweet, low angst, and just an overall good read - y'all are going to love this book.

Hallie is a total nerd - she's super into conspiracy theories and aliens, and, as a freshman in college, she's a virgin who has never been kissed. For years she's been pining over her best friend Eli's older brother Lane. He's the star pitcher of the baseball team, a senior, and a notorious playboy, but he's never really shown her the time of day. On a drunken whim, Hallie decides to write up a proposal for Eli to take her virginity, but she accidentally gives it to Lane. She's floored when Lane tells her that he accepts her offer, but they agree to keep their relationship casual. When they both start falling for each other, however, things quickly get complicated.

Lane is literally every 90s girl's dream guy, and I love that he's secretly been pining after Hallie too. He's so sweet to her, and I love how seriously he takes his "lessons" with her. I don't normally love this kind of college romance because Hallie comes off as a little immature, but I didn't mind her by the end. And y'all. This book was surprisingly spicy for a book about a virgin FMC, things escalate REALLY quickly.

I literally couldn't get enough of all the little 90s references in this book! I'm about to try to go hunt down those old movies so I can watch them again, the vibes are immaculate. Such a well done nerdy girl/popular guy story, mostly because Lane falls for Hallie immediately, I love that he's gone for her from the start. Read this for the sports romance, the 90s nostalgia, and because it's just really good. Thank you so much for the ARC Maren, such an enjoyable read!

Homerun Proposal was so cute and sweet! This is a college, baseball, friends to lovers, and best friend’s brother romance!

Hallie is a freshman at Orleans University and a never-been-kissed virgin who’d really rather not be when the story starts. She moved in with her best friend since childhood, Eli, and his older brother Lane. Lane is a hotshot senior at the college and the star baseball pitcher for the school. And Hallie has always crushed on him.

“You see, for as long as I can remember, I’ve been harboring a small… innocent little crush on my best friend’s older brother, and it’s a secret that I’ll likely take to my grave. Because Lane Collins would never look my way.”

Little does she know, Lane has been crushing on her secretly as well. But has always tried to keep his distance for the sake of his brother’s close friendship with Hallie. After a few drinks at a frat party, Hallie decides she’s ready to lose her virginity and why not ask her best friend Eli to help her out…but she ends up giving her “homerun proposal” to the wrong brother…and then Lane accepts!

I just adored these two together. Hallie is into aliens, Big Foot, and conspiracies, she even has a podcast with her friend about it! I really liked how Hallie is best friends with Lane’s brother Eli and how Lane goes to his brother immediately to make sure he’d be okay with anything involving Lane and Hallie together. Lane is a baseball pitcher who seems to have the world in his hand but is starting to question if he wants to continue to play ball forever. He’s just so sweet and caring with Lane, he googles how to help during her period (alllll the period caretaking), he wears her good luck bracelet she makes him, and the amount of times he calls her “Hallie girl”, ugh all the swoon!

“This may have started as me teaching you, Hallie, but it’s really you that’s been teaching me all along. You’ve been teaching me how to love.”

Thank you so much to the author for an ARC, all thoughts in this review are my own. Homerun Proposal has a pub date of September 8, 2023!

Did I just find a new auto buy author?? Yes, yes I did!

I loved everything about about this book! Hallie was everything with her alien belly ring and Bigfoot anklet. I loved her whole vibe. I really like that the conflict was resolved quickly and not dragged out. Hallie and Lane are one of my favorite book couples this year!

Def recommend!

4 / 5 💌⚾️🤍

this was so wholesome and sweet! I love that it was almost reverse brother's best friend, it was his brother's best-friend, so that was really cute. I adored that they lived together in a share house (forced proximity). It reminded me of Stealing Home by Grace Reilly (which I loved and adored).

One thing I think this book made me realise was that I don't like the lessons trope, sometimes I do and I completely love it but in the past few books that I've read it has not been my fave.

It was really wholesome and full circle. I absolutely loved having his POV to see just how head over heels he was for Hallie from day one. Like that first chapter of hers and then his, you're like oh he's gone already.

Oh wow! This was perfection, a sweet, spicy, funny book. I could not have asked for something better than this book. One of the very best books of 2023 for sure! Even when I wasn't feeling like myself, it cheered me up.

The amount of highlights that I have of this book it's shocking. Lane was the perfect MMC, and my new book boyfriend for sure. He was the cutest, hottest, considered, and charming. I love him so freaking much. I took my sweet time with this book because I didn't want it to end. It was magical.

The drama? Very short. It was kind of dumb and could have been avoided with better communication between the characters.

I need to highlight the fact that it was not a typical brother's best friend. Eli didn't have an issue with them being together, not even when they were ''casual''. I think that Lane took the mature approach and was upfront with Eli. I loved that there wasn't any unrequired love between Eli and Hallie. It was refreshing.

To summarize, I think that there are not enough words to describe how much I loved this book. I can't wait to read Reed and Viv's book.

ARC Review ⚾🛸

Homerun Proposal: If you're anything like me, you'll be grabbing your cracker jacks and hitting the stands for Maren's brand-new baseball series. With the Hell Cats being the first installment of the season where we follow Lane and Hallie's story.

We travel with Hallie through her first year of those big firsts including college, life, and love. Hallie Jo wants to explore all those delicious sexual avenues. As an alternative, she considers her best friend Eli. She writes him a proposal, a list and leaves it on the counter. She proceeds to chat with the person she believes to be Eli whom she shares her heart with him. It quickly becomes apparent though, that the person is actually Lane, Eli's brother, the older boy she grew up. 🤤 Lane immediately accepts her proposal because we love some bedroom lessons, and what these two soon share is just beyond compare.

Hallie is not only and living and fulfilling my dream but also serves as a testimony to those of us who are shy, extraordinary women who live in purple, combat boots, and adore 90s music.💜 🛸 She is so immensely sincere, heartfelt & passionate. That I would be beyond honored to talk to her about music and watch Scream and Child's Play with her any day. 🎵👽 Oh, Lane, my goodness. Another blonde man who got me. I'm forever his, give me his jersey and put his name on it.💍 He’s the perfect southern man who cooks, goes country dancing and ALWAYS strives to please. As, Hallie becomes his universe, he uncovers his vulnerabilities to explore every aspect of his heart. 🥹🫶

This is one of those stories I didn't want to say goodbye to. I teared up at the end because this was a story of utter joy and just pure, bliss. If you love Her Greatest Mistake, Blindside and baseball, you'll LOVE this one. I can't wait to see what Maren does next. I hope that everyone one gets their own story, EVERYONE so that these two will reappear in the future.💞

Thank you to @authormarenmoore for the ARC. 💖👏

A snippet of this book was on my FYP and I genuinely don’t even remember what part it was because I couldn’t even find it in the book?? But I totally read this as a buffer book while finishing another book. It was a quick read, very wattpad-ish. I got so sick and tired of hearing about this girl’s virginity, I was about to offer to sleep with her so she’d shut up. She really embodied the “I’m not like other girls, but I am a girl’s girl” without actually being a girl’s girl. The love declaration at the party absolutely ruined me, I had to skip because I was so embarrassed. And why did he infantilize himself when helping her with her period symptoms?? Like Lane please do better. Also, I do not like period sex smut….. I audibly gasped when that was written out. There was sweet moments tho, and I loved the oversaturation of “baby” and other pet names that I thought were tender.
