Spirit Pass #1

Indiana Wild

Rate this book
Indiana Wild is as wild as the Montana ranch she was raised on. The youngest of four children, she was a delightful surprise for her older parents. She spends her time training horses and cow dogs and loving the freedom of the wide open spaces. When her grandfather dies, she finds her much older brothers have different plans for the ranch she calls home and for Indiana.

Indiana’s oldest brother is determined to tame Indiana and bring her to live with him in Los Angeles where he can keep an eye on her and the money she is inheriting. He believes with a little taming, he can control the wild spirit of his little sister and find her a good husband who can manage her.

Furious with the court order giving her older brother guardianship over her, Indiana turns to the only place she feels at home… the wide-open spaces of Montana. She is determined to avoid her controlling brothers and their greed, even if it means hiding from them until they give up. An unexpected trip through Spirit Pass takes Indiana further than she ever expected… by almost a hundred and fifty years.

Jonathan Tucker is as tough as they come. He and his twin brother have cut a successful horse and cattle ranch in the harsh Montana territory. When cattle rustlers try to steal his cattle and shoot one of his men, he is grateful to the young boy named Indy who comes to the rescue, even if the boy does have an attitude. The last thing he expects is to find the ‘boy’ is in fact an independent, freethinking, stubborn female who is not afraid to voice her opinions. She is as wild as the untamed land around them and he is determined she is the wife for him.

When Indiana is taken from him, Jonathan finds he will do whatever it takes to bring his Indiana Wild home for good, even if it means following her to the future.

4 Indiana Wild Werewolf Stars

Ok so I don’t know if this was in the blub or what not, but I always go in blind it is just how I like to read.

Well I was wondering if this was the right book. You see I picked it because of the Frontier category for a challenge I am doing and I was mighty confused then I got it, time travel! Yeah that was funny. I was all what is going on this isn't what I think then poof it made sense. ;)

So once I figured that out everything started to click into place.
I freaking LOVED Indiana she is a feisty one and she doesn’t back down from something she believes in. Strong willed is what I call it and I think that is what draws Jonathan to her. I like that he “tries” to get her to do things.. hahahah Yeah that ain’t happening. She is a smart one. Totally throws that back in his face.. hehe he has no choice but to see her for who she is and go with the flow.

And that is one of the very first things I loved about Jonathan he sees Indiana as someone different and he is willing to accept her. Made my heart melt when he really saw her.

Her brothers are evil! I can’t even when I was at the part with her brothers I was like this happens in 2013 still people thinking they can make people do what they want and who cares what you want.

I am intrigued at some of the secondary characters I might even keep up with the series. It wasn’t like normal Frontier books I have ever read before and I think that is what made it so interesting.

And Samantha Cook does a great job at bringing all of these characters to life. She was seamless.

*You don't have to like my review but its 100% my opinion, and I am allowed to have it.*

She was his world. She was his everything. She was his Indiana.

Indiana Wild, lost everything thanks to her greedy brothers. All she wanted was to be free; living the life she wants on a ranch surrounded by her animals, but no, her brother Hayden had to take everything she held dear to her including her freedom. Indy has no choice, she needed to disappear in hopes that her brother would wake up and realize what an ass he’s being and leave her the hell alone. Indy was born for this life, survival, living wild and free
...the legend of Spirit Pass. It is said those who travel through the sacred ground would complete a journey that would change their lives.

She never imagined her journey would bring her to a place where she finally finds peace and a place to call home, not to mention the hot cowboy who makes her want to stick around. The first time Jonathan Tucker saw Indy, he knew she was different, just one look could rattle his ever perfect control. He soon realized that nothing would stand in his way of making her his.
“The talk in town is he had you tied up tighter than a calf at branding and made the preacher marry you right on the spot.”

Indy and Jonathan settle into a life together, but their differences always made for interesting arguments and make up sex. They are both happy to just be with each other. Hayden’s still out there looking for her and he will do whatever it takes to get her back; he's had her life planned and he'd be damned if she’s gonna ruin them.

I can’t say much without giving anything away, I enjoyed having the story unfold. It was definitely a surprise and didn’t really know what I was getting into with this book. I love when I have a strong female lead and equally strong alpha, the times they butt heads are just hilarious. They are both stubborn but are willing to compromise. Can’t wait for the next book, Jonathan’s twin brother’s story promises to be as entertaining as this one.

Anytime you read a time travel you have to suspend belief a little bit, but I think with those stories that involve Native American lore, it's a little more conceivable. At least in my way of thinking.

Indiana "Indy" Wild is a young woman who has spent her entire life on a ranch in Montana. Roping, breeding and training stock, working as hard as any man. She can't imagine any other kind of life and she knows she'll never leave. That is, until her much older brother pulled a fast one and sold the ranch out from under her, after the death of her Grandfather. He also convinced a judge that Indy cannot act in her own best interests and secured a guardianship over her and her finances. Not about to be roped (pardon the pun) into whatever kind of swindle he's trying to pull, Indy packs up her two beloved horses, her dogs and enough long term camping gear to survive months if not years in the mountains. It's during her travels that she passes through Spirit Pass.

She's always known about Spirit Pass. Her Grandfather and Native American Godfather both had told her it was a mystical place. Her Godfather had even claimed it was a passage to another world, but of course Indy didn't believe that. Not until she comes face to face with cattle rustlers trying to murder two cowboys in broad daylight.

I won't give away the rest of the story, but I enjoyed it. I loved Indy's spirit and gumption. She didn't take any shit from anyone, including Jonathan Tucker (the hero). She's no wilting violet and even when she finds out she's gone back in time to 1867, she doesn't freak out. For his part, Jonathan is the quintessential western hero - alpha male all the way and no one stands in his way when he wants something. The ending is an HEA but it's open ended for a sequel, which I'm hoping to pick up soon.

A cute book. It's actually 3,5 stars.
Seeing all the raving reviews, I thought it would be better.
I ilked both Indy and Jonathan. They were great and fun.
The scene where Jake, Jonathan and Jacob discover Indy repairing the roof where too much fun!!! LOL
Also the scene where Indy finds out she's way too far away from than she tought was fun too!
But... the idea of time travelling to and fro was too far fetched for me. It just didn't ring true.
Also I didn't understand why Indy went through the pass. If she was so smart why didn't she go to Sam's ranch in the first place? Why getting her things and running away?
Jonathan's and Jacob's acceptance that Indy was from the future was too easy. There was never a doubt. If somebody came to me and told me he was from the future I would have al least some doubt, but here there was none.
The sizzling between Indy and Jonathan was hot, but their love appeared too much insta-love to me. I would have preferred for them to fall in love step by step and not head-over-heel.
But, I liked this book enough to read Jacob's story! :D

Even for a time travel, this whole story was ridiculous. The Heroine is immature and incredibly stupid. I refuse to believe she made it through college, or life in general. She is not "street smart," nor does she seem to have an iota of academic intelligence. As for the Hero? Forget about it! He was as 2-dimensional as heroes go. UGH.

It really bothered me that in 2013 a woman over 18 forced by the court to have a guardian? only way a person has guardianship over someone over the age of 18 is if she had a mental handicap. which she doesn't or least it never came up. So why did the author use it without ever explaining why that's possible? Was it just to progress the story if so the author should have tried something else.

Ah LOVED it!!!! As usual, a great and fun read from Ms. Smith. Couldn t stop smiling and sometimes laught out loud. Indy is definitely made for the ranch and cowboy lifestyle. And Johnatan is the perfect alpha cowboy. Yummy!! Loved the wedding scene. My God, how I would like to see that in a movie. That would be one of my favorite scene ever :)

I wondered if S.E. Smith would capture my interest with this new series the way I am totally hooked on her space stories - and she did. This is an author that gets better with every book I read.

Indiana (Indy) Wild is on the run from her oldest brother Hayden, who sold her grandfather's ranch out from under her and split the money with her other two older brothers. Then, he went to court and had 24 year old Indy declared incompetent, gaining legal custody of her and her assets. His plan is to 'sell' Indy off to a shady, cruel political contributor in return for his support in running for Senator from California.

But - Indy is an accomplished outdoorswoman, adept at living in the wilderness. Rather than fall to her brothers' machinations, she takes off into the Montana mountains with her two dogs and her horses, living off the land and supplies she has brought with her.

After a few weeks, she travels through Spirit Pass, and emerges in a different time.

Other than Indy being a bit more crude-mouthed than necessary, I really loved this book. It's a very good start to this new series. I would have liked to see a little bit more development of the secondary characters, but that will likely come in books to come. Also, some clean-up needs to be done by a proof-reader to the mistakes in the manuscript, but I've seen MUCH worse in other authors' books.

Next book: Spirit Warrior: Spirit Pass Book 2

Love this authors books. I was tidying up my iPad and decided to reread this series. I had forgotten how good it was and read it all in one sitting.
Well written, fun and interesting time travel story with likeable main characters and other characters. All except for Indiana’s brothers, what rat-bags, especially Hayden.
Book one is about Indiana who goes out riding to get away from her obnoxious older brothers who have sold her grandfather’s ranch out from under her. He eldest brother now has guardianship over her and her fortune.
When she ends up going through Spirit Pass she finds herself 150 years in the past and a whole new life is available to her.
Pretending to be a boy she gets a job on a ranch run by two brothers. Jonathon and Jacob are both lovely men even though they have the mindset for that time.
Love how this ended with Indiana looking after herself and will be reading book two asap.
So interesting to think how different things were only 150 years ago and also sad to know what will be happening. Cannot imagine how weird it would be coming into the future for Jonathan and Jacob.
Read this years ago and reviewed it then but reviews are missing.

So. Gross. I’m so sick of these romance plots that laugh off appalling behavior from the “hero” because he happens to be rich and/or hot. The male lead *ties the heroine up against her will and FORCES her to marry him.* Then coerces her into cooperating by threatening to kill her dogs if she doesn’t. The only reason we’re supposed to see that as funny and not as him completely violating her is because he’s a good kisser. Somehow her brothers disregarding her wishes and controlling her life is abhorrent, but a man she just met doing it is charming. Thought I was going to throw up in my mouth. Want a good test for whether or not a male lead is disgusting? Imagine him as a short, bald 60-year-old man with yellow teeth and consider whether his behavior is still “romantic”. The truly sad thing is that there are still women in the world who are put in this very position. Can only imagine what they’d think to see how titillating women who have the privilege of never being threatened this way find this garbage. -_-

A Kindle freebie rescued from my freebie vault. Recognised author's name from her Dragon Lords of Valdier series. Temp review until full review posted on BookLikes after the holidays:

3-star 'split the baby' rating. Pro = very readable story, engaging characters, and good set-up to new series. Con = technical execution still lacking in some areas, given POV whiplash, some minor plot holes & some parts reading like a rough draft. (But thankfully, much better proofed than the Valdier books). Would consider reading book next in series--and really hoping that Maikoda's book is #3!

new series by SE Smith. It is a historical read but is done via a time travel route by the heroine Indiana Wild.

Feel good read with strong female lead character who has a snarky relationship with Jonathan, co owner of a ranch, when she gets sucked back in time. And she does get to bring some modern technology back with her. Loved the general premise of this and definitely recommend it for those of you who like a historical western read.

I can see who the future installment books will be featuring and will definitely be reading them.

Such an absolutely amazing read that I could not put it down... The love scenes were hot, but not overdone. I loved it! Searched for Book 2 for 15 minutes before I realized that Indiana Wild was a new release...Signed up for the newsletter instead to make sure that I don't miss Spirit Warrior... Hope it gets here soon!

Indiana Wild was an awesome surprise to me. When I purchased this audio book (Yes, I actually bought this one!), I didn't notice that it involved time travel. I thought it was going to be just a regular western romance with a hot cowboy. Not that there is anything wrong with just reading about a hot cowboy! But this was so much more. When hints were thrown in about Spirit Pass and then the way the cowpokes reacted to Indy's clothing, I was smiling from ear to ear. Of course there was some type paranormal aspect to this book! It was written by S E Smith! And I loved it!

S E Smith created fabulous characters with strong personalities, lots of humor, a bit of drama and a whole lot of hot romance. Jonathan was mesmerized by Indy from the moment he first saw her. And it wasn't just her beauty that had him tied up in knots. He had never met a woman like her! He not only wanted her, he wanted to protect her reputation. In his world, a woman couldn't be left alone with men out on the range or anywhere else without a chaperone, or her name would be forever blemished. Then there was Indy. Indy was a strong, modern, independent, snarky and fully capable woman who melted into Jonathan's arms the moment he kissed her. There was no way Jonathan was sharing her with anyone!

There were so many fantastic, charismatic characters in this book. I can't wait to read Book 2 of the Spirit Pass series to find out more about them.

Oh. By the way. You may not want to listen to this audio book while driving. I totally forgot to stop at the paint store on the way home because I was so engrossed in the story. Did I run a red light? Then I started wondering what would happen if I got into an accident and my audio was still playing when the police showed up. Would the officer and any bystanders hear the hot sex scene that totally distracted me? Would that be in the police report and would the judge read it out loud in court? Hmmm

Quite full of cliches and a waste of time

I really tried to finish the book, but gave up after a few chapters. It had so much promise, but was quite a let down.
Where to begin? - the fact that Indy was meant to be independent, smart or resourceful. Yet, she couldn't put two and two together and figure out she was in the 1800s after the first few hints, right up till the 'wedding'. Then the whole machismo thing with Jonathan (wrestling her and his whole 'I will marry you or nothing' attitude). Yes, we get that he was meant to think like that because he's from the 1800s. But any romance that could have grown between the characters was completely ruined by the forced wedding, at least for me.

Also, how can you write a female character that is smart enough to survive in the desert, escape her brothers and fix up a cabin by herself, YET she becomes a simpering, stupid, easy to fool idiot just because she sees a penis??? Authors and publishers REALLY have to start doing better and being held accountable for the characters they write up, especially when the characters have very little chemistry and start swallowing each others' mouths a few hours after meeting!

Take note - this is the 21st century and you writers need to keep up with your stories. The time for controlling, invasive male characters and simpering female characters died with Mills and Boon. It's bad enough that we women have to deal with 'Jonathans' and 'Haydens' in real life. I certainly don't want to read about them too!

VERY DISAPPOINTING!!

Algunos spoilers y muchas palabrotas. Aviso:

Cazar, manejar armas y ahuyentar a malos malísimos.

I can't believe I never reviewed this story. I've owned it for years. I LOVE IT and this is probably my fourth re-read. Indiana Wild has lived her entire life on the family ranch in Montana and is devastated when she learns her much older brothers have sold the ranch. Indy's oldest brother, in fact, has pretty much sold her to a rich supporter of his political ambitions. She takes off. Indy is accustomed to being on the range with her well-trained horse and two dogs. As she rides she goes through a sacred Indian pass she enters into the past, about 100 years in the past. Indy lives off the range just fine until she runs into some cattlemen. Now she has a job watching the herd with all the ranch hands, who believe she is a kid...and is MALE. The owners of this huge ranch are twin brothers and it is hysterical when they find out she's a girl! Johnathan claims her as his wife and there's literally a tassel at first, also a very funny scene, but love wins out. THEN... big brother has her tracked down, kidnapped, and brought to California to give to this rich monster who's going to sponsor his political aspirations. Johnathan and his brother go after Indy...into the future they don't understand and with help from Indy's friends save her from her brother. It's a great story from beginning to end. Linda

This was a very entertaining read, but honestly, the time travel wasn't really needed. It felt like two storylines forced together. The old west and present time LA.

I started skimming towards the end where Indy was kidnapped to be sold to a corrupt, abusive senator (I think). At the same time that she is being dragged around by unknown men and shot up with drugs, her loving, possessive, protective husband is off discovering technology and gambling in Vegas. I guess I can't really blame the character seeing as I would be just as distracted if I travelled 200 years to the future, BUT it was disruptive of the plot and didn't match the urgency of Indy's situation.

The only thing that kept me reading was Indy's tenacity and continued struggle. She not only fought for herself throughout the book, she did it smartly. Even when I thought there was no way she would get out of a situation, she always realistically managed to save herself. She didn't need a knight in shining armor.

I really wanted some sort of epilogue or a sense of finality to their story, but the author instead starts the next book with Jacob and his story. This is annoying because I honestly don't want to read the next book, but I might have to skim it to see what happens to Indy and Jonathan.

Wish for more details or perhaps a longer story but overall good. Indy is outspoken and adventurous though very quickly adapts (without much detail from the author though :(). The male lead is very alpha but gives into Indy. I wish there was more given about their lives or Indys encounters with life back then. That being said, this one and Rivers Run are my favorites. Gracie's Touch is up there too. All her books I've read so far tend to be on the shorter side or at least that's how they feel. Plus an annoying thing in her series is that the first few chapters of the next book are always the last few chapters of the previous book from others point of view but still very repetitive. (Also, some things will change. For example, at the end of this book a man is described as thin and in the next book he is described as large. I know that its minor details but yeah slightly annoying for people like me.)

This book is a little ridiculous—mostly enjoyable, but some flaws that really worked me.

When she finally tells Jonathan her story he gets so affronted on her behalf and disgusted that her brother would essentially sell her to the highest bidder (marry her off for political/financial gain). Meanwhile Jonathan chased her down, tackled her and tied her up, brought in a preacher, and forced her to marry him! I’m not seeing much of a distinction here buddy.

The rest of the book was enjoyable, just not the forced marriage or how she could be kicking, cursing, and punching one minute, then all sappy over how attractive he is in another minute.

I won’t be reading book two since it appears his brother is taking the same exact approach with Indy’s best friend. 🙄

Damn shame, cause I liked one of this authors other series.

I really liked it! It was entertaining in a way only Smith can make it, and I loved the way characters interacted with each other!! ❤️❤️

I’m excited to read more, can’t wait!

Quotes:
(Page 184): “My husband will find me and when he does, he’ll kill your ass.”

(Page 197): “God, I love you!” He chocked out in a thick voice. [That hit hard]

(Page 215): “I love you, Jonathan,” Indy murmured, rubbing the side of her head against his chin. “I love you so much.

Excerpt for Book 2:
“She has the mouth of a cowpuncher, the body of an angel, and the temper of the Devil himself. [HAHAHAHAHA! Good luck man!]

Where to begin. I always suspend belief when reading romance time travel, space and shifter stories so physically possible is not a consideration for me.

This was a solid 4 or possibly 5 star read for me until the tie up and trick into marriage portion of the story. A little while later in the story, the brother does something similar and it is frowned upon.

The h throwing hissy fits also got a bit old but a portion of it was necessary for the storyline.

Pretty good read. It’s kind of like Outlander but in the Wild West. So because of the time difference, some parts were super cringey to get through. Overall it was good though and I’ll read the second one.
