I’m an author who had a somewhat unorthodox upbringing. I was raised in South America and the Middle East, and wrote my first stories as a teenager in Kuwait, where my sister and I proved it really is hot enough to fry an egg on the sidewalk. I wrote my first novel in three months on a typewriter when I was 21, I used every romance cliché possible (including amnesia — need I say more?), and never rewrote anything, which is why it’s so much fun to pull it out occasionally when I need a good laugh. I wrote sporadically until my youngest child (who is now 18) was two, when I decided it was time to either actually start writing, or to stop saying I was a writer. So I took a class and started doing the scary things that writing requires. Now I’ve written about twelve novels and several children’s books.

Although the insta-love happens ridiculously fast, it’s still a cute Christmas romance. She has just moved into a lovely house on Christmas Street with her two young children. Instantly her house is Christmas ready. Whereas I start after Halloween and am still working on it Christmas Eve. But, when we learn she is a Martha Stewart clone it becomes a bit more understandable.
Our hero writes preteen mystery novels. He is struggling with a deadline and writers block. Enter the pretty divorcee next door with enough Christmas spirit to infect the world. Can she and her children break through the wall of sadness he and his family erect this time of year? Since she’s driving the Christmas bulldozer, there’s a good chance it will happen.

A truly adorable love story! 😊🎄☃️

There were typos and that drove me a bit nutty, but that isn't why I'm only giving it two stars. It was sweet enough, but the characters fell a little flat to me.

A very light, silly little Christmas romance; not "bad", but this is nothing but bland fluff. Rather enjoyable, but I sort of regret wasting reading time on it.

(I think I'm just a lil' tired of romantic syrup of this kind, plus I don't really like contemporary books, so don't listen to me :P It's kind of a cute book anways.)

Description: From Goodreads

Lexi Anderson is an up-and-coming, Martha Stewart-type TV hostess whose two kids love the Jared Strong adventure novels, which happen to be written by their new neighbor, Kyle Miller.

For the first time in his writing career, Kyle has writer’s block – until he sees the snowman on his lawn and realizes this is the perfect place for his villain to hide the weapon. He digs into the snowman to discover two things: the weapon fits int he body just under the head, and the snowman was supposed to be the back drop for Lexi’s next show.

From this improbable beginning comes friendship. Can there be more for a woman who is afraid to get close again and a man who has shadows from his childhood?

Families join together and hearts are healed as this couple goes walking in a winter wonderland.

My Thoughts:

I downloaded my copy as a free download from Amazon.

As most of you know I have been reading Christmas themed novels as part of the Aussie Readers Group December Challenge at Goodreads. I put the call out to my readers to choose my next Christmas read here and Bah, Humbug was the hands down winner. I think everyone was very intrigued by the name. Thank you Holly, Delia and Marjorie for the input!

Bah, Humbug tells the story of Lexi Anderson, the next Martha Stewart, who has recently moved next door to her children’s favourite author, Kyle Miller, just before Christmas. At first she is horrified to discover that Kyle is a bit of a Christmas Grinch but she soon discovers that he has his reasons to dislike Christmas so she conspires to save Christmas once and for all for Kyle and his family. How does she do that? With lots of decorations and food of course!

They say that the way to a man’s heart is through his stomach and this is definitely the case for Kyle Miller. I find that my boyfriend is generally especially nice to me if I cook any of his favourite foods so I think that Lexi could be on to something here! Kyle starts to realise that he is falling in love with Lexi but will she reciprocate those feelings or fall for the charms of Kyle’s handsome and charming brother?

Bah, Humbug is a nice and easy Christmas themed novella. I would recommend it for anyone who loves the romance or chick lit genres or for anyone looking for a short, Christmas themed read that is easily read in one sitting.

This is an author I have never read before but I really enjoyed this and plan on reading more of these stories in the future. The characters were all likeable and easy to relate to. There was a lightness and sweetness to the story that made it feel like the holiday and not just a title.

Lexi Anderson and her children move onto Christmas Street and they fit right in. Lexi has been touted as the next Martha Stewart and has the television show to prove it. Kyle Miller is an author of a successful series of books who unfortunately finds himself with writers block. When he destroys the snowman of the people next door, thinking it is for him, he finds himself getting in deeper than e expected with his new neighbors.

I just found this to be a quick, fun read that had me from the first page. I could not put it down until I finished!

I was looking for a cute holiday read that did not require a lot of commitment when I stumbled across this story as a free download on Amazon.

This story was exactly what I was looking for. A light short read that truly captured the feel and spirit of the holidays. It had the perfect recipe of romance, cute kids, snow and holiday festivities to meet my needs. Lexie and Kyle were both characters that you had no choice but to like from the very beginning. The entire story brought a smile to my face.

The ending was a little syrupy for my liking however what is one to expect from this kind of read. It still put me in the holiday spirit.

When trying to think of the right words to capture for this story I came across Horrocks thank you note at the end. She managed to capture it so I am going to repeat it here. I hope she doesn't mind.

It was a light hearted, humorous, chick-flick-in-a-book story that allows people to curl up with a good book for an afternoon. Well said Horrock, I do not think I need to say more.

This was free on Amazon, for the kindle. It wasn't rated terribly so I got it. It was bad. The characters could've been interesting, but were far too predictable. The same was true with the storyline. At one point the neighbor lady, who's name I'm not going to bother remembering solves an entire family's problem they've been carrying around with them for several years in a matter of five minutes. In the end after the two main characters haven't so much as even hugged, or gone on one date, neighbor guy is all the sudden asking her kids' permission to marry their mom. WHAT?? And they ask if they can call him Dad???? Really? If some one had been in my life five minutes I personally wouldn't be calling him Dad. Just me?
This book was too cheesey, and far too unrealistic for my taste. The end sealed the deal for me. I guess I got what I paid for. I think I'm going to steer clear of Christmas romance novels for quite some time.

Lexi Anderson is a TV decorator who has recently moved to a new place with her two children. Kyle Miller is a famous writer that Lexi's kids adore and who happens to live right next to their house. Sounds like a perfect fairytale... but the first encounter between Kyle and Lexi does not seem like the perfect one!

This was a very cute novella. There were lots of funny moments, but also a very touching part. I liked how the protagonists’ relationship grew and became something more special than a friendship, though I was a little perplexed because everything happened in about a week. It felt a little weird but nonetheless it was lovely.

I loved what Lexi did for Kyle and his family, and I especially loved Lexi’s children. They were adorable and I think the story would have been less engaging without them. Their candour was totally endearing!

A contemporary, sweet Christmas read that I highly recommend to romance lovers!

I only picked this book up because I needed to read a Christmas book for a reading challenge and this was free on amazon.

I have never been a huge fan of the novella, as I don't think many authors can pull it off without it feeling rushed. Unfortunately I don't think this author quite got there, it had potential but I think the ending seemed all rushed. Perhaps a simple kiss would have felt a bit more realistic. Further Lexi was questioning her feelings and being all scared about commitment and I don't think this was resolved. It's like she just change d her mind with no justification.

For me this story was a bit too corny and cheesy. I don't mind fluff but it just seemed like fluff for fluffs sake.

A bit unrealistic and the writing didn't grab me right away, but this short story packed plenty of warmth and holiday comfort. The relationship was rushed but genuinely sweet with some fun family moments, and more importantly it treated the struggle of grief during the holidays well. There was a particularly moving scene where a family opened up about past pain and started the first step toward healing through bonding and remembering the good instead of just the agony of loss. Can't forget the funny moments with various Snowmen as well - if only a proposal I received ended up so creative.

This story is full of warmth and for me, everything you want in a short Christmas book. Young family help someone heal their heartbreak and as a result two people fall in love. It's very sweet and cheesy. A fun little read

When a holiday stager and her two children who love Christmas move in next door to a grinchy writer with writer's block, the holidays are bound to have some shenanigans afoot. This short holiday romcom looked like just the thing.

Lexi Anderston lost her parents and then thought she'd found family with a man who walked away from her and their two children, but the losses made her stronger and want to prove that she can depend on herself only to raise her kids. She had some hard years of getting by, but now she is a local TV celebrity who is the new Martha Stewart and her favorite season is upon them. It came as a shock to learn a guy she had a bad run-in with in the neighborhood turns out to be her kids' favorite author. She sets her mind to showing Kyle what Christmas magic can do for him and his forlorn extended family, but she has no plans for changes in her own status quo.

Kyle Miller may be the bestselling author of a line of children's mysteries, but his latest manuscript is giving him fits. Why did he say he'd make the earlier deadline? And, right when he needs to focus most, his brother reminds him that he hasn't taken his turn hosting the brooding Miller family hoidays or come around the family in a long time. Kyle blows his brother off, but then encounters his feisty neighbor who insists on pushing him into the Christmas spirit. Lexi might be big on the holidays, but Kyle is determined that she feel the magic of family and not be allowed to hide from love.

Bah, Humbug! Is cute and quick. It's a novella so the characters and romance are moderately developed to get it all in. The light and fun mood while still touching on deeper issues for both Lexi and Kyle was just what I was in the mood for. It is far-fetched, but works for a holiday romcom.

So, if one is in the mood for a sugary quick bite, I can recommend this one.

This was a VERY, CUTE, HALLMARK-MOVIE, type Christmas story. A short story, VERY-EASY - READ, I finished in a day and a half?

Young, divorced, up- and - coming - Martha Stewart of the new millineum, Alexis 'Lexie' Anderson just moved into her dream home in Utah. A week before Christmas, she is reading her children, Steven and Trista, a book from their favorite detective series by Jared Strong. Not realizing, that the author of her children's favorite detective sreies, Kyle Miller, lives next door.

Kyle doesn't do Christmas. For one, he has a January deadline he needs to finish. Second when he was a child, his mother died of cancer on Christmas Eve. When Kyle's family; brother's, sister-in-law, and father ask him to host Christmas this year, Kyle keeps using the excuse of his deadline...Until, his pretty, Christmas decorating, loving neighbor agrees to help him host his family's Christmas. In exchange for attending her Son's January birthday party.

Soon, Mr. Humbug is having snowball fights, and building snowmen, instead of locked in his office at his computer keyboard. Enjoying his family, and pretty neighbor and her 2 great kids, and enjoying Christmas for the first time since he was a small child.

Like I said, very light, easy, super sweet read, with some heart tugging moments with Kyle. The ONLY thing I had a problem with is that this book all takes place in a week? And Kyle is supposedly in LOVE with her SO MUCH, in 1 week, that he proposes. There's not even a first kiss (a near miss), until after the proposal.

Still good though. And hey, it was FREE!!! :-)

MY TAKE
I read this some years ago and just recently found it was an audiobook. It was a fun listen, and the narrator did a great job. It's a novella, so it's a short story. It's a fast love story, not exactly insta-love but close to it. But I've known people who have met their future partner quickly and knew right away that it was right, so I didn't have to suspend my disbelief too much.

The theme of healing was strong, and the Christmas Eve scene was touching.

Wonderful, sweet Christmas cozy romance novella about a single mom and her Grinch of a next door neighbor. Lexi Anderson has moved into a new neighborhood with her two children and is wildly excided about both her new home and TV job as the new Martha Stewart. Kyle Miller is a writer whose books her kids love, but who has a real problem with Christmas - he hates it and wants nothing to do with celebrating it. When Lexi catches him messing with her perfect snowman, she has some not very nice things to say to him. From that not very good start, these two find that the spirit of Christmas can heal a lot of the pain of the past for both of them.

The story starts out nicely. I like how Lexi and Kyle are introduced. In particular, Lexi seems to be the most developed character; she's my favorite because she has a straight-forward yet witty personality. Everyone else is pretty flat. It's really annoying how the children are always grouped together. They kind of have their own personalities, but then they're still just "the children" with generic personalities.

The beginning is enjoyable as the plot builds up, but then around chapter 9, the story takes a nose dive. The action proceeds a lot faster, and some of the actions described seem physically impossible, especially when Kenneth is having a snowball fight with Kyle and Kenneth...there's only supposed to be one Kenneth in the story. Around chapters 8 and 9, the story also speeds up a lot. Everything seems to take place within a week, which makes no sense to me, especially considering Kyle and Lexi are potential long term love interests. It's like the book moves so fast, they're heading for disaster.

A lot of gender stereotypes are used. Lexi and Alyssa, the two women, are good with home making and emotions while the men just try to hold things in. Really? I understand using stereotypes, but the author could've at least changed them a little.

Description is kept to a minimum and the author uses lots of thoughts to progress the character development. Sometimes, it seems more like telling than showing. This novella starts out with a lot of potential and then...the potential disappears.

This is a winter cozy for sure! Before I was even halfway through with this book, I bought the next one in the series! I thoroughly loved this book. I laughed and teared up here and there. But I mainly laughed. This was a comical romance, Chirstmisy, cozy book. And NO the romance was not too mushy like mashed potatoes!

I loved how the author had no foul or crude language in the book at all! So if children wish to read this, do it. And there is absolutely no sex in it and there are no steamy scenes. Sorry if you are a big fan of that. I enjoyed this book to the max.

Lexi is a single mother of two children with a TV show. She is the new Martha Stuart of the times. Her children and her love reading this series by Kyle Miller. And her children especially want to meet him and will get to for they have recently moved to the town the author resides in. But Lexi meets Kyle in an unpleasant way, he is destroying her snow man. I will not reveal anymore but it becomes very funny after that scene.

This is a great book for mothers and daughters or for the whole family to read together. It will make you cry a little in places but more than anything it will make you LAUGH. And it is set in the time frame of a couple of days before Christmas and then, of course, Christmas Day! And as I have stated there is No language in the book. The romance isn't so steamy it fogs up your Kindle screen and there are no step by step sex scenes.

Enjoy the book and get ready to laugh while you sip on that warm cup of hot chocolate. Merry Christmas everyone!

A light-hearted and frothy Christmas romance. Easy reading novella that is well written and fun - great for a short read, but I did feel that there was a lot packed into it, especially the last few pages that I felt were a bit rushed. This could have done with being a bit longer, and I feel the story would have benefited from this as it seemed that the proposal came out of nowhere.
Aside from that, it had great characters and I found it fun. I certainly wouldn't be averse to reading more from Heather Horrocks.

Cute, short, sweet and to the point. Lexi is a tv decorator, compared to being and up and coming Martha Stewart. She is a single parent with two adorable kids and they move to Salt Lake City to make a new start, right around the holidays. She reads these mysteries to her kids all the time and they're all big fans of the author, Kyle. Guess who lives next door? Yep. Kind of predictable, but very cute and clean.
