The Best Young Adult Books of December

Posted by Cybil on December 3, 2019
As dedicated readers already know, some of the best and most innovative stories on the shelves come from the constantly evolving realm of young adult fiction. Every month our team takes a look at the books being published and how they're resonating with early readers. We use this information to put together a roundup of soon-to-be favorites.

New in December: Debut novelist Ryan La Sala imagines a world where private fantasies spin off their own splinter realities in Reverie. Tomi Adeyemi mixes traditional fantasy with West African mythology in Children of Virtue and Vengeance. And venerated British novelist Geraldine McCaughrean returns with the survival drama Where the World Ends.

Nigerian American author Tomi Adeyemi follows the further adventures of Zélie and Amari as they quest to bring magic back to the land of Orïsha. Adeyemi's series has won pretty much universal critical acclaim for its deft mixture of Western-style fantasy (think Harry Potter) and West African mythology.

Kristen Sears Jack Kerouac by Gae Polisner. I read two of her books for book clubs and didn’t even realize they were categorized asYA. She creates incredibly beautiful, heart breaking stories that are relatable to everyone on some level. Her characters are drawn so well you feel like you are inside them, feeling all their feelings. Her books are smart and impart wisdom without hitting you over the head. She is one of my favorite new writers who I have found this year.
