Nigerian American author Tomi Adeyemi follows the further adventures of Zélie and Amari as they quest to bring magic back to the land of Orïsha. Adeyemi's series has won pretty much universal critical acclaim for its deft mixture of Western-style fantasy (think Harry Potter) and West African mythology.

Hearts, Strings and Other Breakable Things!
Jack Kerouac by Gae Polisner. I read two of her books for book clubs and didn’t even realize they were categorized asYA. She creates incredibly beautiful, heart breaking stories that are relatable to everyone on some level. Her characters are drawn so well you feel like you are inside them, feeling all their feelings. Her books are smart and impart wisdom without hitting you over the head. She is one of my favorite new writers who I have found this year.
