As I write this, I'm on Prince Edward Island in Canada. It's such a beautiful place--green fields, the deep blue of the ocean and unusual red cliffs and sand. The history here goes back 10 thousand years to the arrival of the first humans on the island, and the fossil record goes much farther back than that. Lots of stories!(less)

That sense of humor, that desire to find the light in the darkness, that we might demeaningly call "plucky" or even find inappropriate or offensive, intrigued me. I began to see how humor was a potent weapon when fighting a Fascist government that sought total control over its people. (less)

A month to publication day...

The last month before a book comes out is kind of hectic and nerve-racking and worrisome and blissful all at once, full of that fast/slow momentum and seesawing emotions that I imagine the last month of pregnancy must be like. Or a taxi ride in NYC... Second novels don't tend to get the same level of attention as debut novels from press and bloggers, but instead you have the people who liked your Read more of this blog post »

“American tourists come here and they see only the happy, beautiful Italy they want to see, and that the Italians want them to see. The party. They don’t see the scars. The ongoing struggles. Why would they? They don’t see them at home, either.”
Christina Lynch, The Italian Party

“The world’s first bank was born here—Monte dei Paschi di Siena, in 1472. Before Columbus even set sail!”
