New Book - Fostered Identity - coming soon

I have been working on a new book - Fostered Identity - and a new series - The Twisted Deception Suspense/Thriller/Mystery Series.

I got it back from the editor. Some things she caught surprised me while other made me laugh. In part, I have a character saying, "I'm sorry." My editor asked me why. When I looked at it, I agreed it didn't make sense. The only thing I could attribute it to, is my Canadian roots. We do like to say, "I'm sorry."

Here is a teaser of the blurb:

Her teenage sister has run away. It's her fault. And on her watch.

Now she has to plan an impossible heist, of her mom's million-dollar jewelry.

What could go wrong?

I'll be sharing the book cover soon.

What Writing My Latest Novel Taught Me

Writing this novel taught me a lot.

It always surprises me when I write a novel because each one is so different, not just the story but the process that I go through to write it.

People often say to me, your so lucky to be able to do that – write a book. I do have to agree, I am lucky because I get to create roller coaster ride suspense/thrillers. But believe me there is no luck involved in writing a book. It’s not really about hard work but it is about focus and dedication. If you’re going to write a book, you have to be willing to put in the time.

Believe me they do not write themselves.

I set a crazy goal with writing Split Seconds. Initially I had set out to write 40 to 45,000 words by the end of November, which I didn’t meet. But I did write 42,202 words in 18 days. So I’m pretty happy with that. The best part is that I did achieve writing 55,000 words in 21 days. I think that’s a new record for me. I still didn’t hit the 18,000 words in a day (and probably won’t again – it just made me feel like my arm was about to fall off) but I am sure I have never written that many words – 55,000 – in that short of a time period.

Whew! It was a crazy amount of focus. Especially considering, I had quite a few other things going on at the same time. Life does not stop.

I’m not sure why I had told myself I wouldn’t do it again. I guess I figured that after being focused so much for three weeks, I’d be burnt out. Instead what I found was that I truly liked the focus and dedication that was able to do, day in and day out

Split Seconds is finished.

The great news is that book 5, which is actually book 3 in The Caspian Wine Series, is finished.

Start Writing a Compelling Fiction Book Blurb, Stop Writing a Synopsis

Start Writing a Compelling Fiction Book Blurb, Stop Writing a Synopsis.

It’s overtaking my life… I don’t know how to make it stop…

Are you frustrated with trying to write a compelling & interesting fiction book blurb? Does it take up a lot of your time? And it still doesn’t sound all that good?

If you’re an indie or self-published author, you’ll have to write the fiction book blurb or you’ll have to find someone to do it for you. Writing the book description is a rather daunting task, which is why many authors would rather avoid it. I know I felt that way for a long time, I struggled with how to start, where to start, and what to write. There was no clear process to follow. I did like most authors, I wrote a synopsis and then used that information to write a fiction book blurb. It took a long time to write and wasn’t all that good.

When I published my second novel, I felt like it took as long to write the fiction book blurb as it did to write my novel. That’s when I decided there had to be an easier way. I got tired of putting so much time, energy, and stress into writing just two hundred words. So, I studied a lot of book blurbs, fiction and nonfiction and I learned what worked and what didn’t and what made the two of them, so different.

Here’s what I discovered about fiction book blurbs.

It’s hard to capture the essence of the story and make it interesting, so that it grabs the readers’ attention.
Do you find yourself struggling with this?

The good news is that you’re not alone. Over 50% of the authors, I surveyed, said they didn’t know how to make their fiction book blurb interesting.

Ficton vs Nonfiction Book Blurb What's the Difference

The fiction book blurb is really quite different than the nonfiction book blurb. Did you know that? They really serve two different purposes as do the books.

Fiction stories are meant to take the reader on an adventure, remove them from their everyday lives. It can let them live vicariously through someone else. Reading fiction is like stepping into someone else’s shoes and being right there on their journey and seeing how they handle all that’s coming at them. Essentially, how they handle life. We want to go on the mystery of where the story is going. Will the protagonist win or succeed – solve the murder, find the love of their life, overcome their illness, figure out ‘life’… or fail – they become the next victim, they don’t find their true love, they don’t figure out ‘life’…

If they win or succeed how will they do it? If they fail, how will that happen? We want that whole package of the roller coaster up and down of life.

Here is the book blurb for Deadly Ties:

She went to jail for the right reason but the wrong murder…

With her mom in the hospital from a recent attack, Kyara has to wonder if her grandmother’s recent release from jail isn’t behind it. Pulled from her quiet, content life, Kyara finds herself on a mission, not only to find out who put her mom in a coma, but who just might have a lifetime of secrets to hide.

Snooping into what’s going on, seems harmless until Kyara runs into Ryan, and discovers who he really is. Unknowingly, they have stirred up a long forgotten past, one, that some will go to any lengths to keep hidden.

Secrets spanning thirty years may never come to light, unless they can solve the deadly secret, now buried beneath the golf course and stay ahead of those trying to kill them.

How many more people will die before the lies are unraveled and those who are guilty, decide that killing an entire town, isn’t too far to go to hide their dirty past?

Cover Reveal coming soon.
