“I bid you welcome to a new Utopia where men may be free of the so-called moral subjugations and constraints, and where for a time we may shake off those bonds of servitude wherein we are so tyrrannously enslaved."
"You are the humanist,George, not I- what the deuce does he natter on about?"
"Mostly whores and Booze," George replied with a grin.
Sandwidh contined while rapping once more upon the door, "Man is led into vice only when he is denied, my friends; for it is his nature to long after things forbidden and to desire most fervently what is denied."
"Another translation?" Philip asked George.
"Whores and booze... in boundless supply."
"Ah,"Philip said. "I stand in renewed appreciation of the philosophers.”

“At times a jolting revelation overtakes one in a crushing, incapacitating wave, and at others, it unsettles one in slow, subtle, stages – this is how Lady Susannah came undone - in measured moments of increasing comprehension.”

“(From FORTUNE'S SON)
"Philip had long ago begun drinking to excess, simply to obliterate the reality that he was half a man, living half a life. He had a title without the fortune, a wife that was no lover, and a lover, the only light in his darkened existence, who could never be his wife; thus, he drank...drink and despair had made him reckless and rash. He’d gambled and he’d lost. Sunk in self-denigration, the cycle began anew; he drank.
Though aspiring for oblivion, he had only achieved piss-faced, when Lady Hastings had arrived after the race. The inevitable row had ensued, and then the world had retracted into blessed blackness.”

I sincerely hope you enjoy it! If you are not already aware, although it does stand alone, it is part prequel and part sequel to my first book THE HIGHEST STAKES, a work of romantic historical fiction set in the world of 18th century horse racing. (Many people don't realize the two books are connected!)

Hi Suzanne! I'm pretty much the same about my ratings but because I'm an author, I have to be careful about critiquing others. (People in glass houses...) If I can't give a book at least a 3 I simply mark it read with no rating but I will respond privately to friends who wish to know my thoughts on a book. I've greatly enjoyed Goodreads and have made some incredible friends here. I hope you have a great experience as well.

Thanks for the invitation. I am fairly new on Goodreads and have been very impressed by the interface and general design of the site. I look forward to making more friends who love historical romance.
I looked over your ratings of various books. I like the fact that you save a 5* for the amazing few. So often a 4* is considered flawed. I personally start at 3* for a book I enjoyed and work from there. Anything I would not recommend a friend spending time on is given a 1 or a 2.

Hey Faerimyst-
This group is great fun! We've members from diverse places who have helped us to discover many excellent books that seem to have passed under the general radar. Feel free to share and to sound off as well!

Thanks for inviting me! I only recently discovered Goodreads when some of my novel's initial reviews started popping up here. I can't believe what I've been missing! I love to read and talk about books and am so glad to find a crowd that shares my taste in fiction.
I gather from your last remark about "Beautiful characters" that you write as well? I would love to know more. - Emery
