A conversation with two of the ship's nurses planted the seed of an idea all this years ago. What would it be like to live aboard a cruise ship when we grew old? We decided it would certainly be cheaper than a nursing home.(less)

“A ship is safe in harbour,’ he would say, ‘but that’s not what ships are for.”
Joanna Nell, The Single Ladies of Jacaranda Retirement Village

“Always sit down when a sick person is talking business to you, show no signs of hurry, give complete attention and full consideration if your advice is wanted, and go away the moment the subject is ended.”
Joanna Nell, The Last Voyage of Mrs Henry Parker

“Theirs, she considered with pride, had been an exclusively monotonous marriage.”
Joanna Nell, The Single Ladies of Jacaranda Retirement Village

Topics Mentioning This Author

“It seems a commonly received idea among men and even among women themselves that it requires nothing but a disappointment in love, the want of an object, a general disgust, or incapacity for other things, to turn a woman into a good nurse.

This reminds one of the parish where a stupid old man was set to be schoolmaster because he was "past keeping the pigs.”
Florence Nightingale, Notes On Nursing

“Sleep that knits up the raveled sleave of care,
The death of each day's life, sore labor's bath,
Balm of hurt minds, great nature's second course,
Chief nourisher in life's feast.”
William Shakespeare, Macbeth
