Boxing divisional rankings: Canelo still king at 168 pounds, but where does Berlanga land?

Canelo Alvarez, above, retained his No. 1 spot at super middleweight with a decision victory over Edgar Berlanga on Saturday. Steve Marcus/Getty Images

Canelo Alvarez maintained his status as boxing's top star following another revenue-generating Mexican Independence Day weekend fight in Las Vegas.

Canelo also remains the top fighter at 168 pounds after his lopsided decision win over Edgar Berlanga on Saturday at T-Mobile Arena. Alvarez retained his WBC, WBA and WBO super middleweight titles with a dominant performance that included a third-round knockdown.

Berlanga was a long-odds underdog and he wasn't expected to last the distance, but he never threatened to win the fight. He drops one spot to No. 6.

Caleb Plant returns to the super middleweight rankings at No. 4 after being removed for inactivity earlier this year. Plant struggled at times with major underdog Trevor McCumby -- he was dropped in Round 4 -- on the Canelo-Berlanga undercard, but rallied to score the ninth-round TKO stoppage. The bout was the former champion's first since David Benavidez outpointed him in March 2023.

Another boxer who ended a long layoff: Stephen Fulton. He ended a 14-month hiatus away from the ring with a split-decision win over Carlos Castro in his featherweight debut. The fight was Fulton's first since he was stopped by Naoya Inoue in an undisputed 122-pound title fight last July. Fulton enters the 126-pound rankings at No. 10.

Erislandy Lara, boxing's current oldest champion at 41 years old, became the first man to stop Danny Garcia and likely sent the former titleholder into retirement.

Lara retained his WBA middleweight title with a ninth-round TKO victory in a fight contested at a 157-pound catchweight. Now, Lara will hopefully move on to a unification with WBO titlist Carlos Adames, who is also aligned with PBC, if not WBC and IBF titleholder Janibek Alimkhanuly. Middleweight is perhaps boxing's weakest division at the moment, and with the win, Lara moves up three spots to No. 3.

ESPN's divisional boxing rankings highlight the best in the sport in every weight class. Rankings will change based on recent results and performances. Fighters who have announced they are moving to a different weight class will be ranked in that new division, if warranted, only once they fight in that weight class. Fighters who currently own titles in two divisions can be ranked in both.

Fighters who haven't competed in the past 12 months -- and don't have a fight scheduled -- will be dropped from the rankings until they fight again. Any fighter who tests positive for a performance-enhancing substance will also be removed. That boxer will be eligible to re-enter the rankings after his next bout.
