Six years after the violent death of her husband, Amelia (Essie Davis) is at a loss. She struggles to discipline her 'out of control' 6 year-old, Samuel (Noah Wiseman), a son she finds impossible to love. Samuel's dreams are plagued by a monster he believes is coming to kill them both. When a disturbing storybook called 'The Babadook' turns up at their house, Samuel is convinced that the Babadook is the creature he’s been dreaming about. His hallucinations spiral out of control, he becomes more unpredictable and violent. Amelia, genuinely frightened by her son's behavior, is forced to medicate him. But when Amelia begins to see glimpses of a sinister presence all around her, it slowly dawns on her that the thing Samuel has been warning her about may be real.

Candice Frederick Reel Talk Online Nestled deep within this teeny Australian thriller packs a simple yet profound message about what it often feels like to be a single parent, and even what it feels like to be the child of that parent. Rated: B+ Sep 1, 2017 Full Review Charlotte O'Sullivan London Evening Standard The Babadook's villains and victims are still running amok in my brain. I think they might be there for some time. Rated: 4/5 Oct 5, 2016 Full Review Noel Murray Nashville Scene What's most terrifying about The Babadook is that Kent grounds a bizarre supernatural premise in very real feelings of anxiety and depression. Rated: 4.5/5 Aug 9, 2024 Full Review Wael Khairy The Cairo Scene Here’s a horror film that strays away from cheap thrills, and taps into something real; true human fear, grief, anxiety, and depression...the more I thought of The Babadook, the deeper it sank into my psyche. Dylan E I honestly love this movie, it is honestly terrifying (especially watched at 3 AM) I thought the kid was an annoying kid which I kinda didn’t like, but if you want to be scared watch Babadook! Rated 4.5 out of 5 stars 09/19/24 Full Review Jonathan C Pure torture. That kid......I wanted him to die, and the sooner the better. It was a horrible, boring, irritating, movie. After I hit "POST" on this review, I hope to never be reminded of it again. I want my time and money back. Rated 1 out of 5 stars 09/17/24 Full Review Christian C This movie is a litmus test on whether or not you should listen to the opinions of a horror movie fan. And anyone telling you not to watch it is probably the type of reeeeeeeee who writes entire reviews in one, run-on sentence and complains when “the creature isn’t a creature” because - after all - the sharks were “actually sharks” in ‘Sharknado’. If you’ve seen this movie, you probably understand that it’s an allegory. This apparently flies *WAY* over the heads of the people saying “it coulda kilt them this but makes no sense~~” …Which is an odd takeaway, given what you come to realize about why “it” didn’t kill the characters. The code for brainless counterculture nonsense is usually pretty clear: - exaggerated reaction (“wORST mOvIe EFER! iD gIVE iT 0 sTARS iF i cOULD!”) This is obviously a weird thing to see catch on, seeing as how a rating scale only goes to its own parameters, so if a 1/2-star is the lowest rating, a “0” isn’t any lower… But whatever. - pantomimed nonsense from professional film critics: “tERRiBLE dIALOgUE, bad writing, threadbare sets (lmfao…) aWFUL sET pIEcEs, bad direction.” None of these people have ever written or directed anything, nor have they (lmfao, again) designed a movie set…? - usually includes some dumb reference to socio-political buzzwords: ‘bias’, ‘woke’, ‘messaging’, etc. Rated 4.5 out of 5 stars 09/15/24 Full Review Audience Member The Babadook is a true masterpiece of the horror genre. Suspense builds continuously throughout before accelerating hard in the latter half of the film and it's perfectly paced, giving breathing room when needed without detriment to the scares that happen throughout. Said scares are simple yet highly effective, relying largely on the film's cinematography and eery audio sprinkled throughout, which plays well into Amelia's disintegrating mental health. Her evolving lapse in her mental health is spectacularly portrayed by Essie Davis, who absolutely steals the show with her phenomenal acting. Her performance is only enhanced by her on-screen counterpart, Noah Wiseman, who provides a fairly solid performance for such a young talent. Grief is a common theme amongst horror films, but none translate grief into terror quite as effectively as The Babadook. Engaging, thrilling and downright terrifying, The Babadook is very much near the top of what horror films have to offer. Rated 5 out of 5 stars 09/05/24 Full Review Rose M Such a fantastic film, this movie is chilling and gripping, and is one of the only movies that made me check behind the door twice. The acting is incredible, and the creature feature is tasteful and necessary. Truly intimidating and scary watch, fantastic. Also bonus points for being Australian.
