Johann Schmidt is the leader of HYDRA, who became the first subject of an unwilling Abraham Erskine and his Super Soldier Serum, becoming disfigured and earning him the name Red Skull. Schmidt led HYDRA and obtained the Tesseract, intending to use its power to control the world through a series of uses, such as activating the Sleeper buried underneath Castle Zemo, and instructing Arnim Zola into developing Project Master Man, to replicate the perfected serum that had been used to create Captain America. However, Captain America and his allies managed to stop all these developments during their assault at Castle Zemo, prior to Schmidt's ultimate defeat.
