"Halloween's a magical holiday. All about family, friends, and the thrill of getting to be someone else for a day."
"Wrong! Halloween's about candy. And scaring people, but mostly candy."
Billy Maximoff and Tommy Maximoff

All-New Halloween Spooktacular! is the sixth episode of the first season of WandaVision.

Synopsis[]

Disturbances on Halloween separate Wanda from Vision, who looks into anomalous activity in Westview.

Plot[]

Scarlet Witch & Vision

The late 1990s arrive as the Halloween season dominates the atmosphere. In the Maximoff household, Billy and Tommy goof around with their uncle "Pietro" as the family prepare to spend the day trick-or-treating together for the first time. However, Vision suddenly leaves on his own accord to attend a "community watch", leaving Wanda and "Pietro" to take care of the twins. Outside, Pietro and Tommy engage in reckless behavior, such as pumpkin smashing and candy stealing. Wanda finds Herb, who informs her that he had not seen Vision on patrol. In another part of town, Vision wanders into an area where he finds neighbors eerily suspended in motion.

Meanwhile, Tyler Hayward prepares S.W.O.R.D. for a war with Wanda Maximoff, aiming to assassinate her to free Westview of her spell. Monica Rambeau objects to the extremist approach, wishing to negotiate with Maximoff. However, Hayward orders her, Jimmy Woo, and Darcy Lewis off the base in a move that oversteps his provisional authority. Before the three can be transported out of the base, Rambeau and Woo overpower their captors and disguise themselves to stealthily return to the facility. Inside, Lewis hacks into Hayward's files and discovers he was secretly tracking Vision through his vibranium signature.

Quicksilver & Scarlet Witch (WandaVision)

Later that night, Wanda forces Pietro and Tommy to return the candy. Tommy soon discovers he shares his uncle's super-speed power; Wanda advises him to take his brother along should he continue zipping at high speeds. As they leave, Wanda reminds them not to go past Ellis Avenue. Further in the town centre, Pietro suddenly asks his sister about her involvement with the sudden appearance of Westview's children and the handling of the townsfolk; she only recalls feeling completely empty, not knowing how the Anomaly came to be. Looking back at Pietro, Wanda briefly sees him as a bullet-ridden corpse, horrifying her.

WandaVision 29

Elsewhere, Vision locates a lone car near the edge of town. He finds Agnes inside and taps into her mind to unlock her true personality, who reveals to the synthezoid that he was actually a deceased Avenger, and that Wanda wouldn't allow them to leave town. Vision is left dumbfounded at these revelations, so he places Agnes back under, leading her to drive away. As Rambeau and Woo prepare to meet her contact for a way back into Westview, Lewis informs her that her two passages through the barrier had rewritten her DNA each time. However, Rambeau remains determined to reach out to Wanda and help her. As the two leave, Lewis remains behind to crack Hayward's last firewall, which reveals Project Cataract. She forwards this discovery to Woo via email.

WV - Outside of Westview

Vision ventures further past Ellis Avenue and finds the barrier separating Westview from the rest of town, leading Hayward to move his men and witness him emerge into the real world. But without the Anomaly's influence, Vision begins to crumble into pieces. As Hayward and S.W.O.R.D. observe, Lewis-- who also detected Vision's arrival-- attempts to help him, but she is handcuffed to a vehicle. Before dying, Vision tells the observers that Westview needs help. With Billy sharing his mother's telekinetic powers, he is able to hear his father in pain, leading him and Tommy to run and inform Wanda.

Scarlet Witch (WandaVision)

Pietro jokes about Vision's death, leading Wanda to blast him aside. Fearing for her husband's condition, she unleashes a blast of magic that causes the Anomaly's barriers to expand, which forces Hayward and his men to retreat. Lewis is left behind, leaving her, Vision and the S.W.O.R.D. base to be absorbed into Westview, transforming the area into a carnival. As Hayward desperately reaches out for assistance, Rambeau and Woo are also able to escape.

Trivia[]

  • This episode pays homage to American sitcoms of the 1990s and 2000s, most notably Malcolm in the Middle.
  • During the episode's initial release, Vision is credited as "The Vision" in the intro theme. However, Disney+ edited the credit months later to simply list him as "Vision".
  • "Pietro Maximoff" is credited as "himself" in the intro theme.
  • Despite the setting of this episode being around the late 1990s and early 2000s, one of the movies playing at the town cinema is The Incredibles, which released in 2004. Tommy Maximoff also wears an anachronistic Minecraft beanie that was officially released in 2011.
  • Tommy utters the word "kick-ass", which Wanda repeats with curiosity. Kick-Ass is also the name of a movie that both actors for Pietro, Aaron Taylor-Johnson and Evan Peters, starred in.
    • According to Matt Shakman, this was unintentional; the line was simply meant to convey "Pietro's" effect on the kids, while Wanda's response was improvised.[1]
  • Wanda, Vision, "Pietro", Billy and Tommy all dress up in their original comic outfits for Halloween.
    • Ironically, when Elizabeth Olsen was cast as Wanda for Avengers: Age of Ultron, director Joss Whedon told her: "When you go home and Google her, just know you will never ever have to wear what she wears in the comics." [2]
      • The costume in the show however is much less revealing than the standard comic book costume,
      • This contradiction is acknowledged by Olsen herself when talking about the filming of the episode in The Making of WandaVision.
    • Pietro's hairstyle for his Halloween costume is modeled on that of Wolverine from X-Men, in an intentional nod to both the comics character and Fox's X-Men film franchise that Evan Peters previously appeared in.[3]
  • A commercial aired during the episode advertises Yo-Magic yogurt, referencing how Wanda and Pietro Maximoff were the sole survivors of HYDRA's experimentation with the Mind Stone.
  • "Pietro" refers to Tommy and Billy as "demon spawn"; in the comics, both Billy and Tommy had been spawned by the demon Mephisto.
  • The name "Ray Johnson" can be spotted on S.W.O.R.D.'s computer files. In the comics, this is the alias of John Wraith, a member of the mutant group Team X.
  • Agnes' license plate, DA1B2C, is the hex code for Alizarin crimson, a shade of red.
  • The Halloween setting of the episode is an homage to Vision and the Scarlet Witch Vol.1 Issue 1 and Vol.2 Issue 5, both featuring a Halloween setting.
