The first person I ever interviewed was India's Prime Minister Morarji Desai at his suite at the United Nations Plaza Hotel as research for a two-year undergraduate project on Mahatma Gandhi. During my post-college years as a Director of Human Resources and later as a licensed, nationally certified psychotherapist, I conducted thousands of interviews, but none were as challenging as that first one.

When I was 22, if you asked me what I wanted to be when I grew up, I would have answered, "a psychotherapist/ cook/ photographer/ musician who writes books". I've managed to fit all of those activities into my life. Now that I'm retired from treating mental health disorders, I spend my time doing "whatever is fun." That includes photography, writi

In 2015, we flew to India to be in her wedding party as her "American parents."

A few people on Quora.com asked me to write about that experience. More than 100,000 Indians read what I wrote! Today, I have lots of online friends in India, including a bunch of young people who have become like sons and daughters to me. They call me "Baapu", "Baba", "Angel Paa", "Touji", Papa Rick", and "Dad."

This year, we're returning to India. We'll be staying with the families of these young people in five different cities. My current book project will tell that story. Scheduled for publication in 2018, the book will be called "AMERICAN BAAPU: India Through My Eyes"(less)

It occurred to me that I might take what I had learned, as well as my most memorable experiences, and put it together in an easy-to-read and entertaining way. That was a daunting task, considering that I've worked with so many rape victims, combat veterans, abuse victims, schizophrenics, etc. How does one write about such things and keep it light?

I spent nearly three years, off and on, writing and rewriting the first 100 pages until I found my 'voice'. Then it took me a month, full-time, to write the next 200 pages. After six or seven months of editing, I had written, "MiXED NUTS or What I've Learned Practicing Psychotherapy."(less)

“There is an unspoken agreement in every successful relationship: "I'm not perfect and you're not perfect. I can ignore your imperfections if you can ignore mine. I choose to spend my life in your company.”
Rick Cormier, MiXED NUTS or What I've Learned Practicing Psychotherapy

“Three things make up who we are as individuals: what we think, what we feel, and what we do. If we manage to change any one of these three aspects of ourselves, the other two will follow.”
Rick Cormier, MiXED NUTS or What I've Learned Practicing Psychotherapy
