This was a nice short story. For anyone interested, you can read it for free *here*.

The story is about Kiam Miar, a young man trained to be an assassin (yes, this is a "job" and a respectable one, too, in this world). As his final test, he is sent on a supervised mission - if he fails, he will be killed immediately by his supervisor.
However, a few things go wrong, like (view spoiler) so Kiam Miar decides to look into it a bit more. This is a risk, as his supervisor can decide to kill him at any point, but he doesn't care.

It's a nice fantasy story about hired killers, conscience, and not just blindly and numbly following orders but questioning people, your world and even yourself. It wasn't perfect, but it was really very good.

Sud666 assassin (yes, this is a "job" and a respectable one, too, in this world)....
*lol* it's respectable in "our" world too. Though the PC term is "Surgical Action Specialists". :) Very lucrative. Only those who work for criminal organizations are deemed "not respectable". Any government will tell you, off the record of course, that a Surgical Specialist is not an assassin. In fact I'm sure I could pull up several "laws" that prohibit such things. Cool...oh well what do I know? 1997-2008 must have been a fever dream. Must have been stoned or drunk :(*

Trish *lol* Well, here it's a guild. You know, lile the guild of bakers or the guild of butchers in the Middle Ages.

Sud666 *sniffles* we have "Guilds" too.. my guild was Marines. There are other Guilds, each with its own specific style :)

Trish Bwahahahaha. That's one way to look at it. But all those "guilds" belong to the same "company", in the book it's more like post office, food corner and assassins. ;)
